JPMorgan Chase is one of the largest banks in the country, offering more services than many of its competitors. It provides mortgages, auto loans and one of the broadest selections of credit cards in the industry. And its website experience can compete with those at online-only banks that focus solely on checking and savings.

Chase has a good basic checking account, but its savings rates are generally low, and some of its fees are high and hard to avoid.

Checking

4.5

Chase offers several checking options, including its most basic account, Chase Total Checking®, and a couple that bear interest. Each gives users access to mobile banking, including online bill pay, and comes with a debit card that has a security-enhancing EMV chip.

Chase Total Checking® account holders can avoid a monthly fee by having monthly direct deposits totaling $500 or more, keeping a daily beginning balance of at least $1,500 or keeping an average beginning day balance of $5,000 or more across certain Chase accounts.

Chase offers a $200 bonus on its Total Checking® account (expires 1/21/20). See our list of best bonuses for details.

Horrible customer service
This bank is ridiculous to deal with. I opened a new bank account with direct deposit and deposited my first paycheck as a paper paycheck. They put a hold on my account for 14 days and my company has been in business for 70 years and is a very wrapped up a company in the community. I then called to find out why my check was on hold for such a long time and was transferred four times and disconnected once. I seem to be talking to people in foreign countries and no one could help me in anyway. I finally went to the local branch and they were able to help get the check released immediately. I then had to wait for about two weeks to get my debit card and in the meantime try to use the zelle App from their phone to transfer funds to my spouse so I could use my money and they froze the email sent. When I called to find out why they told me I needed to verify my information and they sent a code to my phone. After I did this they still would not release the money. I had to call again and finally got it canceled and was able to get money through my Apple wallet. After my direct deposit went in my account I again tried to use the zelle app to pay my rent and again it froze the money
