HSBC Current Accounts FAQ

Who is HSBC?

HSBC is an international banking group that offers a range of banking and financial services to consumers and businesses all over the world. It has branches throughout the UK and offers consumers access to services such as current accounts, mortgages, personal loans and savings accounts.

Can I apply for a HSBC current account?

Yes. HSBC offers several everyday current accounts and each includes various features and banking services. When applying for a current account with HSBC you are likely to undergo a credit check and other financial checks, in order to assess your income and employment status. You may also be asked to provide proof of address and age.

What types of current accounts does HSBC offer?

There are three everyday current accounts available through HSBC:

  • HSBC Bank Account: The HSBC Bank Account is a straightforward current account that offers most banking services, including access to a Visa debit card, direct debit and standing orders, telephone and internet banking, as well as access to the HSBC banking app, and an overdraft, providing you meet the eligibility criteria. Some fees may apply for certain transactions and for the use of an arranged or unarranged overdraft.
  • HSBC Advance Bank Account: This current account is aimed at people who can pay in a minimum amount each month and who meet other eligibility criteria. Although the account doesn’t charge a monthly fee to maintain the account, other fees may apply for certain transactions or services. The Advanced Current Account offers extra features, such as preferential rates for savings and overdrafts, larger withdrawal and overdraft limits.
  • HSBC Premier Bank Account: This account requires holders to pay in a minimum amount each year, or to hold minimum investments in HSBC. The account offers a range of added extras, including access to other Premier accounts and products, preferential rates, insurance products and financial guidance. Charges may apply for some services.

Can I switch my account to a HSBC current account?

Yes. HSBC is signed up to the Current Account Switch Guarantee scheme, which means that much of the legwork will be carried out for you when you want to switch. You will need to provide some account details and the details required from you when applying for a HSBC account, to start the process off.

Will HSBC perform a credit check when I apply for a current account?

It is likely that your credit record will be checked when you apply for a HSBC current account. The bank is also likely to check your employment status, your address and your financial situation. This helps it to decide whether you are eligible for its bank accounts and which bank account will be the most suitable for you.

Can I borrow through my HSBC current account?

You will usually be able to apply for an overdraft once you have an HSBC account set up. Fees and charges will apply at different rates depending on the account you have.
