This card has a hefty $85 annual fee, waived the first year. However, the relevant question is, do the perks outweigh the fees?
The quick answer is a resounding yes, especially if you travel with checked bags. You can save $200 per round trip if you and 3 family members each check one bag, because each passenger's first checked bag costs $25 at the airport ($23 online). Add this to the 25,000 mile sign up bonus and the $50 cash back after your first purchase, and this card is a no brainer for people who frequently fly Continental. One added bonus that we only factor in as a fringe benefit is the 2 lounge passes per year. It costs you $50 to buy a day pass, so this is a nice perk, especially since lounges have free food and beverages.
One Time Perk: $300
Signing Bonus: 25,000 miles (worth $250 based on our analysis) and $50 cash back after your first purchase. These together are worth $300.
Ongoing Perks: $100 plus $25 per passenger per checked bag
Free Checked Bag Free, for you and your travel companions: $25 per person per flight for domestic flights, but up to $50 per person per flight internationally
2 Lounge Passes Each Year: $50 per pass, so $100 per year. Details here.
Very Unusual Perks: Primary Auto Rental Insurance (Almost Every Other Card Only Offers Secondary), Baggage Delay Insurance, Lost Luggage Insurance, Trip Delay Insurance, Trip Cancellation Insurance
PRIMARY Auto Insurance. Almost every credit card offers auto rental insurance. The only problem is, the insurance provided is almost always secondary to your primary auto insurance. If you wreck a car, you report it FIRST to your auto insurance company, and the credit card insurance picks up any deductible or non-covered expenses. You may still end up paying "Loss of Use" fees and a few administrative fees after all is said and done. The benefit of having a card with primary car rental insurance, like the Continental OnePass and Diner's Club cards, is that you don't need to report the accident to your insurance company, so this could save you from rising premiums.
Baggage Delay Protection. If you experience a baggage delay, you can be reimbursed up to $100 per day, with a maximum of up to $300 when your bags are delayed more than 18 hours. While this type of insurance is common on American Express cards ($1,000 in coverage on Amex Platinum for example), it's only offered with some premium MasterCard offerings.
Lost Luggage & Trip Delay Protection. You can be reimbursed $3,000 per trip for your lost checked and carry-on luggage, and up to $300 for meals and lodging expenses for trip delays of 12 hours or more (or requiring an overnight stay). While this type of insurance is common on American Express cards, it's only offered with some premium MasterCard offerings. American Express Platinum offers up to $1,000 per trip for Lost Luggage, and $1,000 for Trip Delay expenses.
Extend Protection. For mfg warranties of 3 years or less, the extended protection doubles the eligible warranty for up to 1 additional year.
Price Protection. You can be reimbursed for things you purchase that drop in price, at up to $500 per item.
Purchase Protection. If something you own is lost or stolen, up to $10,000 per incident, or $50,000 per year, MasterCard has your back - this includes leaving your phone in the taxi according to the OnePass brochure.
Return Protection. You can be reimbursed for up to $300 per item that the evil shopkeeper won't let you return.
ID Theft. $1,000 in reimbursement for expenses incurred in restoring your identity.
Ongoing Costs: $85
Annual Fee: $85 per year, but waived the first year.
