Nest is a line of home security products by Google that includes cameras, video doorbells, smoke alarms and door locks. Nest no longer offers an alarm system like many other home security providers, but its equipment works well for Google Home integration.

Nest offers subscription plans to access extra features such as smart alerts and longer camera recording storage, but you’ll need to contact Nest partner ADT, a home security company, to set up professional monitoring services.

Though the company has limited offerings compared with some competitors, Nest is still a good pick for existing Google Home customers looking to integrate specific security products into their homes.

🤓Nerdy Tip

Google will end support for Nest Secure alarm systems on April 8, 2024. For existing users, this means their equipment will no longer connect to Wi-Fi or be accessible through the Nest app. Learn more about what this means for Nest users.

How does Nest work?

Hardware

To purchase Nest products, visit the Google Store website and navigate to the Smart Home section. From there, you can select specific products, such as cameras and doorbells, and add them to your cart. Then, the company ships them to you.

Software

You can control equipment and receive alerts from any of Nest’s cameras through the Nest app.

You can also sign up for a Nest Aware subscription, which gives you access to camera recordings and smart alerts. Subscriptions are sold separately and start at $8 per month. Nest cameras can differentiate between people, animals and vehicles, and even between people with a Nest Aware subscription.

Nest cameras and doorbells offer two-way audio, meaning you can listen and speak through the device. With some of Nest’s older camera models, though, you’ll need to use the Nest app to take turns speaking.

Installation

To have your equipment professionally installed, you can add that service (called OnTech) starting at $99. Otherwise, use the Nest app to walk through the setup process.

Customer service

Google Nest has an online Help Center with pages for each of its products. If you don’t find the answer you’re looking for, you can reach customer service via phone, chat, Facebook or X.

Benefits of Nest

Flexible monitoring options

Nest allows you to self-monitor your cameras or purchase professional monitoring through Nest partner ADT. You can monitor your cameras for free with limited features or purchase a Nest Aware subscription to receive intelligent alerts.

Smart home integration

Nest products are built for Google smart home integration and can all be controlled remotely from the Nest app along with your lights, music, garage door controller and more.

Downsides of Nest

Discontinued alarm system

Nest used to have an alarm system called Nest Secure, but Google stopped selling those products in 2020 as part of its partnership with security company ADT.

On April 8, 2024, Nest software will stop supporting Nest Secure in the app, and the products will no longer be able to connect to the internet.

According to Google, existing users have received emails with instructions to access a free ADT security system as a replacement, up to a $485 value, or a $200 Google Store credit.

Intelligent alerts cost extra

One of Nest’s most well-known features is its intelligent alerts, which can log familiar faces and differentiate between regular events in and around your home. However, these advanced features aren’t built into your purchase; they require a Nest Aware subscription starting at $8 per month.
