Breakdown cover – home start FAQ

Most breakdown cover policies will provide you with roadside assistance if your car breaks down while you’re out and about. However, what if you’re still at home and your car won’t start? Some basic policies don’t offer ‘home start’ cover unless you add it on to your policy. Each policy will have its own limitations on the home start service it provides so it’s important to check the details of your cover carefully.

What is home start breakdown cover?

When your car won’t start at home, many drivers assume their breakdown cover will send out an engineer to help them. However, unless you add ‘home start’ to your policy, you might not be covered. Home start usually means that an engineer will come to your home (or to within a very short distance of your home – usually within a mile) and try to get your vehicle going again. If this isn’t successful, it may also include recovery of your car to a local garage for repairs.

What does home start breakdown cover include?

Most home start policies will include an engineer coming to your home to try to fix the problem with your car as well as recovery to a garage if necessary. However, there are likely to be factors that change depending on the policy you take out, such as:

  • The timeframe within which an engineer will reach you
  • The time of day you can call out an engineer
  • Whether you can book a time for the engineer to come
  • The distance from your home within which the policy will be valid
  • Whether the cost of repairs and parts is included
  • How long the engineer will spend trying to fix your vehicle
  • What types of vehicles are included

Who might want to take out home start breakdown cover?

However well-maintained your car is, it’s very difficult to completely prevent at-home breakdowns. Cold weather can impact whether or not a car will start, as well as other environmental factors, alongside the age and condition of your car. If your car is prone to not starting or breaking down before you even leave your driveway, you might want to consider adding home start cover to your breakdown cover.

When might home start breakdown cover not be useful?

If you have mechanical knowledge, you may consider home start to be an unnecessary extra when taking out a breakdown cover policy. If you have helpful neighbours who can tow you to a garage, or if you live very close to a garage, you may also consider home start to be an unnecessary add-on.

Cars often fail to start for reasonably simple reasons, such as flat batteries or failed starter motors. These are problems that can be easy to diagnose and sometimes easy to solve. Being stuck at home is often less stressful than being broken down outdoors, so think carefully before choosing whether or not to include home start cover in your policy.
