Our writers and editors follow strict editorial guidelines that ensure fairness and accuracy to help you choose the financial products that work best for you. In our pet insurance reviews, our editorial team considers the customer and the insurer. These are some of the factors we take into account:

Plans offered. Pet insurance companies generally offer the following three types of plans:

  • Accident and illness policies reimburse you for medical treatment if your pet gets sick or injured.

  • Accident-only policies pay expenses if your pet is injured.

  • Wellness plans help you budget for preventive care costs.

Scope of coverage. We looked for plans that cover a wide range of potential expenses.

Ability to customize plan. This category looks at how many ways you can customize what you pay for your plan and how you’re reimbursed.

Can pay your vet directly. This indicates whether an insurer can pay your vet directly for medical expenses. With this service, you don’t have to pay the money yourself upfront and then wait for reimbursement.

Dive deeper with our criteria for evaluating pet insurance companies.

Liberty Mutual pet insurance offers a wide range of coverage for cats and dogs, including an accident-only plan and a plan with wellness coverage. The company offers discounts for current Liberty Mutual customers and military veterans.

Liberty Mutual won’t cover pre-existing conditions except for curable ones that have been symptom- and treatment-free for at least 180 days.

Note: Coverage options and availability may vary depending on where you live and the age and breed of your pet.

Liberty Mutual pet insurance plans

Liberty Mutual offers three plans for pet owners to choose from. To qualify for coverage with Liberty Mutual, your pet must have had a comprehensive vet examination within the last 12 months.

This plan will cover treatment related to sudden injuries and accidents, including damage to permanent teeth and anesthesia if an emergency procedure is required. However, it won’t cover your pet for illness.

Accident and illness

Liberty Mutual’s accident and illness plan includes coverage for cancer treatment and alternative medicine like acupuncture and hydrotherapy.

Accident, illness and wellness

This plan covers everything that the accident and illness plan does, plus wellness exams, heartworm medication, vaccinations and other types of preventive care.

What Liberty Mutual pet insurance covers

Liberty Mutual’s accident-only plan covers:

  • Treatment for injuries.

  • Euthanasia and anesthesia when performed by a veterinarian for an injury.

  • Up to two treatments per year if your pet eats a foreign object.

  • Burial and cremation expenses.

Liberty Mutual’s accident and illness plan covers everything the accident-only plan does, as well as:

  • Treatment for a covered illness.

  • Anesthesia.

  • Congenital health conditions, including hip dysplasia.

  • Behavioral therapy performed by a veterinarian (except in Florida and Alaska).

  • Alternative medicine like hydrotherapy and acupuncture (except in Florida and Alaska).

  • Cremation and burial expenses.

The accident, illness and wellness plan includes everything covered by the other two plans, plus:

  • Spaying and neutering.

  • Prescription medications.

  • Flea and tick prevention.

  • Dietary food and supplements.

  • Wellness exams.

  • Dental cleaning.

  • Vaccinations.

  • Deworming.

What’s not covered

Depending on your state, Liberty Mutual’s pet insurance may not cover:

  • Pre-existing conditions, except curable ones that have been symptom- and treatment-free for at least 180 days.

  • Breeding.

  • Osteoarthritis.

  • Any condition that could have been prevented by sterilization.

  • Obesity that is not due to a medical condition.

  • Eye or ear issues related to age.

Liberty Mutual’s accident-only plan will not cover your pet for any illness-related care.
