Haventree branches out into direct-to-consumer banking
BACK TO TOPHaventree Bank, previously focused on alternative mortgages, launched its direct-to-consumer digital bank on July 7, 2026.
Its new Everyday Growth Account is a no-fee hybrid chequing and savings account that pays 2.5% interest with no monthly fees or minimum balance. Customers can make bill payments, send free Interac e-Transfers, link external accounts and open up to eight individual or joint accounts for different goals.
Haventree also offers non-redeemable GICs with terms ranging from one month to five years. Its two-year and five-year GICs currently pay 4%, which is competitive amongst Canada’s best GIC rates. Rates are subject to change.
The main limitation is access: Haventree does not currently offer a debit card or ATM withdrawals, so customers will need another account for cash and card-based spending. But there is a straightforward mobile app used to manage account activity, and the Google Play and App Store reviews have been positive so far.
Nerdy take: The Everyday Growth Account’s unconditional 2.5% rate is competitive, especially for people who like dividing their money into separate buckets. But the 4% two-year GIC may be the bigger draw for savers willing to lock in their cash.
Aeroplan makes airport purchases more rewarding
BACK TO TOPAeroplan members can now earn points at more than 900 participating Avolta-operated airport retail locations across North America, including outlets at Toronto Pearson, Vancouver, Calgary and Billy Bishop airports.
You might not be familiar with the name, but Avolta is the company behind Hudson and Dufry. Eligible outlets also include participating Kiehl’s, Sunglass Hut and Hudson News stores, as well as select duty-free locations.
This is not an airport-wide offer. Members should use Aeroplan’s Club Avolta page or app to confirm whether a specific store participates.
To earn across the broader network, members must link their Aeroplan and Club Avolta accounts, select Aeroplan as their preferred partner and scan their Club Avolta code at checkout. They’ll earn one Aeroplan point for every $2 spent. Eligible Avolta’s Reserve & Collect purchases also qualify.
Avolta’s HMSHost restaurants, bars, cafés and grab-and-go outlets are expected to join later this year, bringing the partnership to nearly 1,900 locations.
Nerdy take: Half a point per dollar is not enough to change where you shop, and airport prices are still airport prices. The Club Avolta discount may be the more valuable benefit. Still, it is an easy extra return on purchases you were already going to make, especially once airport dining is added.
Must-see credit card welcome offers
BACK TO TOPAmerican Express cardmembers should check their accounts for July’s targeted Amex Offers.
Current offers include:
Toronto Pearson dining: Get a $30 dining credit after spending at least $60 at eligible restaurants from July 6 to September 30. Cardmembers can earn another $30 credit after spending $60 from October 1 to December 31.
Alberta Arc transit: Get a $2 credit after using an eligible Amex card for a contactless adult fare of at least $4, up to 10 times.
Marriott: Get a $60 credit after spending at least $250 at participating properties in Canada, the U.S. and Mexico by October 6.
Shop Small: Get $5 back after spending at least $25 at each of up to two participating businesses by July 31, for up to $10 total.
Amex Offers are targeted, so not every cardmember will receive every offer. Registration is generally required before spending.
Nerdy take: These discounts are worthwhile when they overlap with purchases you already planned. A $60 Marriott credit is not a deal if it convinces you to book a $250 stay you did not need.
Not sure if you'll be approved?
Soft credit check tools, like American Express® Canada’s Apply with Confidence feature, can tell you if you're eligible without dinging your credit.Triangle adds a small but repeatable gas bonus
BACK TO TOPTriangle and Petro-Canada have partnered up for Top Up Tuesdays, a weekly promotion that runs through December 29, 2026.
Members who buy at least 25 litres of gas on a Tuesday at a participating Petro-Canada or Gas+ station can earn $2 in bonus Canadian Tire Money. They must scan their Triangle Rewards card or fob and pay with cash, debit or an eligible Triangle credit card.
On exactly 25 litres, the bonus works out to the equivalent of eight cents per litre. Members can earn it once each Tuesday.
Nerdy take: Top Up Tuesdays are a cute idea, but an extra $2 in CT money per week isn’t going to change anyone’s life. But it is worth remembering if Petro-Canada is already part of your routine.
