Once upon a time, I listened to the Backstreet Boys while wondering if my crush liked me back.

Now I’m wondering if my siding will make it through another winter.

With the Backstreet Boys headed to Toronto for a 12-show residency in early 2027, I thought it’d be the perfect time to revisit the soundtrack of our youth — as adults who now have favourite grocery stores and strong opinions about bank fees.

The songs still hold up. I see you swaying in your office chair.

They just sound a little different when the most complicated relationship in your life is with money.

1. "I Want It That Way"

Now dedicated to: The lifestyle you can almost afford.

The single-family house. The tropical vacation. The occasional dinner where you don’t discreetly check the menu prices beforehand.

Oh, and saving for retirement. Someday. You hope.

Your budget begs you to pick a lane. You responded with a five-part harmony.

2. "Quit Playing Games (With My Heart)"

Now dedicated to: Your mortgage renewal.

You’ve been together for years. You’ve never missed a payment.

And now your lender wants to discuss “what the future looks like” if your rate jumps 126 basis points.

Apparently, it looks like a bigger monthly payment and wondering whether your monthly RRSP contribution is now a "nice to have."

Turns out even a fixed mortgage rate has a change of heart every 5 years or so.

3. "Larger Than Life"

Now dedicated to: Your grocery bill.

You went in for milk, eggs and a healthy dinner. You came out $147 poorer, and somehow your spouse is still complaining that there’s nothing to eat.

The receipt is longer than the list of people you invited to your wedding.

You would like to thank cheese for its contribution. (Shakes fist at dairy tariffs.)

4. "Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely"

Now dedicated to: The money left in your account after payday.

For one beautiful moment, your balance had potential.

Then the mortgage payment came out. Then daycare. Then insurance, utilities and the credit card bill.

Now $318.42 is standing alone in your chequing account like the last kid waiting to be picked up after a school dance.

5. "As Long as You Love Me"

Now dedicated to: The house you bought.

The bathroom is dated. The basement smells suspicious after heavy rain.

The previous owner’s idea of home improvement involved a surprising amount of tape.

But it’s all yours.

You're willing to overlook a lot for a place where you can put down roots. But it'd be nice if it stopped expressing its needs in $5,000 increments.

6. "I'll Never Break Your Heart"

Now dedicated to: Your emergency fund.

It’s not the most exciting relationship you’ve ever had.

No surprise flowers during your work shift. No masterfully-curated mix CDs full of unexpressed passion.

Just money sitting there, quietly being available — and growing while you sleep because you stashed in it a high-interest savings account earning up to 4.6%.

Then, the minivan makes a noise that sounds expensive.

Suddenly, that boring dependability is incredibly attractive.

7. "Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)"

Video preview image

Now dedicated to: The subscription you thought you cancelled.

It’s back. Again.

The streaming service. The fitness app. The free Crave trial you signed up for to watch one specific show last March.

You don’t remember inviting them, but it seems everybody has arrived at your credit card statement for a homecoming, all at the same time.

8. "Shape of My Heart"

Now dedicated to: Your retirement calculator results.

You entered your savings, your contributions and the age you’d like to retire.

The calculator had some notes.

Sure, still working at age 79 sounds great.

Now, you’re now casually asking your 10 year old if he “promises to take care of mommy when she looks like Grandma” and wondering whether your collection of Backstreet Boys memorabilia counts as a diversified portfolio.
