Labour Day 2026: Free and Low-Cost Things to Do Across Canada

Labour Day (a stat holiday which honours workers and the labour union movement) falls on Monday, September 7, 2026, capping off the final long weekend of summer.

And Canadians could probably use a pick-me-up.

In a recent NerdWallet Canada survey, two-thirds of Canadians said they had spent money on something they wanted but didn’t need, at least partly because concerns about their finances, the economy or the future made enjoying the present feel more important.

What they wanted from this “doomspending” was revealing.

Among Canadians who reported the behaviour, 54% wanted a lift in their mood or a distraction from stress, while 47% wanted something enjoyable to look forward to. Three in four said the spending affected what they spent, saved or borrowed afterward.

There’s nothing wrong with wanting a mood boost or something fun on the calendar. But that “something” doesn’t always have to be a purchase.

From free park admission and fireworks to concerts, festivals and community barbecues, here are some low-cost ways to enjoy Labour Day weekend across Canada.

Nationwide

Free Admission to Parks Canada Sites

The Government of Canada is offering free admission at national historic sites, national parks and national marine conservation areas operated by Parks Canada through September 7. Lockage fees are also waived at canals administered by Parks Canada.

Camping and roofed accommodations operated by Parks Canada are 25% off, but reservation fees, parking, guided programs and third-party services may still cost extra.

Ontario

Toronto Labour Day Parade

This annual parade organized by the Toronto & York Region Labour Council begins at 9 a.m. on September 7 at University Ave. & Armoury St., heading toward Exhibition Place. Organizers expect more than 20,000 labour members to participate.

Niagara Falls Fireworks

It’s free to view Niagara Falls from Niagara Parks, and nightly fireworks are scheduled for 10 p.m. throughout the Labour Day weekend.

The fireworks are subject to weather conditions. Parking and paid Niagara Parks attractions are not included.

Labour of Love — Oshawa

This community arts and music celebration honours workers, community, solidarity and Oshawa’s labour history.

From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on September 7, visitors to Memorial Park can enjoy live music, community art, face painting, balloon art, free hot dogs and a performance by the Camaros Baton Twirlers. The nearby Canadian Automotive Museum will also offer free admission and tours during the event.

T.U. Jazz Fest - North York

Taking place at Mel Lastman Square in North York from September 4-6, 2026, this festival offers three days of free live music, special concerts and community celebration across two outdoor stages.

Quebec

JOAT Festival — Montreal

Short for “Jack of All Trades,” JOAT is an international street-dance festival running from September 1 to 7. Some events are ticketed, but many parts of the festival are free, including the JOAT Market, concerts, DJ sets, exhibitions and street-dance workshops. Check the schedule carefully, as some free activities require advance registration.

British Columbia

Vancouver TAIWANfest

Running from September 5 to 7, TAIWANfest is an annual cultural festival exploring connections between Taiwan, Canada and the world. This year’s theme is “Islands in the Wind.”

The street festival, artist market, outdoor performances and cultural exhibitions are generally free. Food, merchandise and some scheduled events cost extra or require registration.

Metro Vancouver Labour Day Celebration — Burnaby

The Vancouver & District Labour Council and New Westminster & District Labour Council are hosting a free community celebration at Edmonds Park in Burnaby.

From 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on September 7, attendees can enjoy live music, children’s activities, free food and refreshments, and community and union booths.

Alberta

Lethbridge Labour Day BBQ

Enjoy a free barbecue with vegetarian and gluten-free options, live entertainment, bouncy castles and face painting at Galt Gardens on September 7. The event begins at 11 a.m.

Manitoba

Free Entry to All Manitoba Provincial Parks

Vehicle permits will not be required at Manitoba provincial parks from September 4 to 7. Nightly camping fees still apply.

Park interpreters will also offer free guided hikes, campfire talks and other family-friendly programming throughout the weekend.

Winnipeg Labour Day Family Fun Day

The Winnipeg Labour Council is hosting a free family fun day at Memorial Park from 3 to 5 p.m. on September 7. Activities include games, refreshments, face painting and a dunk tank.

Nutrien Fireworks Festival — Saskatoon

Running September 4 and 5 at Saskatoon’s River Landing, the Nutrien Fireworks Festival offers live music, cultural performances, family activities and nightly fireworks.

Admission is free and no ticket is required, but food and purchases from local vendors cost extra.

Free Family Fun Day — Liverpool

Taking place at Privateer Park, this free event runs from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on September 7. Attendees can enjoy live music, free hot dogs and beverages, and a food booth hosted by Lunenburg/Queens Special Olympics.
