Tangerine also unveiled Benefinder alongside the card. The exclusive, app-based tool designed to help cardholders track, manage and use the benefits and offers available to them.

The card gives Tangerine customers something they haven’t really had before: a paid, premium-ish rewards card tied to Scene+. That makes the card different from Tangerine’s existing credit card options, but not automatically better.

Tangerine’s no-fee cash-back cards can earn 2% back in selected categories, while the new World Elite Mastercard earns 1.5 Scene+ points per dollar in its accelerator categories and charges a $120 annual fee.

Here are five key things to know about the Tangerine Rewards World Elite Mastercard.

1. You can choose your own bonus categories, but the earn rate is different

Like other Tangerine cards, including the Tangerine Money-Back Credit Card, the Tangerine Rewards World Elite Mastercard lets cardholders choose the categories where they earn at an accelerated rate.

With this card, the rate is 1.5 Scene+ points per dollar spent, rather than 2% cash back.

That difference matters.

Scene+ points are generally worth the same as cash back when redeemed at a rate of 100 points for $1, making 1.5 points per dollar roughly equal to a 1.5% return. Tangerine’s no-fee cash-back cards can earn 2% back in selected categories.

There are 13 accelerator categories to choose from, including grocery stores, restaurants, gas stations and recurring bill payments. There’s no spending cap to track, and categories can be switched up every 90 days to better match your upcoming expenses. If you have a trip coming up, for example, you could choose the hotel-motel category to earn extra points on stays.

All other purchases earn one Scene+ point per dollar spent. By comparison, Tangerine’s no-fee cards earn a base rate of 0.5% cash back.

The tradeoff is fairly clear: the World Elite card has a lower selected-category earn rate than Tangerine’s no-fee cash-back cards, but a stronger base earn rate, plus Scene+ points and additional card benefits.

2. The basics: Annual fee, interest rates, welcome bonus, income requirements

The Tangerine Rewards World Elite Mastercard has a $120 annual fee for the primary cardholder and a $30 annual fee for each authorized user. That’s in line with many other travel credit cards, though well below the cost of seriously premium travel cards.

The card’s interest rates are also typical: 20.95% on purchases and 22.95% on cash advances. The foreign exchange fee is 2.50%.

You may be able to offset some of that foreign exchange cost by choosing “Foreign Currency Spend” as one of your accelerated earn rate categories. That doesn’t make the card a no-foreign-transaction-fee card, but it may soften the impact for some cardholders.

The welcome bonus is 30,000 Scene+ points when you spend $3,000 in the first three months. That seems fairly attainable, and since 30,000 Scene+ points are worth about $300, the bonus can more than offset the annual fee in the first year.

The card also offers a 10,000-point Annual Lifestyle Credit, worth $100 in Scene+ points, after you spend $30,000 in a year.

The income requirements will be familiar for anyone who’s applied for a World Elite Mastercard: $80,000 in individual income or $150,000 in household income. You may also qualify if you have at least $400,000 worth of assets under management.

The first-year math may be easy to justify because of the welcome bonus. After that, the card’s value depends more heavily on whether you use its ongoing perks.

3. Travel perks: Useful, but not ideal

For many travellers, the most exciting perk may be its free airport lounge visits.

Cardholders get four complimentary DragonPass passes each year. The passes are counted on a per-person basis, so if you visit a DragonPass lounge with a friend, that counts as two visits.

Those lounge passes are worth about $200. If you use them every year, the $120 annual fee may be easier to justify.

The card also comes with a broad range of insurance coverage, including:

  • Travel medical insurance for people under 65.

  • Car rental collision coverage.

  • Trip interruption, trip cancellation and flight delay coverage.

  • Delayed and lost/stolen baggage coverage.

  • Mobile device insurance.

Another travel benefit applies when you book hotels, car rentals or experiences through Scene+ Travel, powered by Expedia. At checkout, you’ll earn three Scene+ points for every dollar spent, even if you’re paying with points.

However, that 3X Scene+ Travel earn rate does not apply to flights, which is where many spend a significant portion of their travel budget.

These perks offer value to casual travellers, who can use the lounge passes and insurance benefits. But if you’re choosing a card mainly for travel, it’s still worth comparing the Tangerine Rewards World Elite Mastercard against cards with stronger travel-specific features.

4. Shell savings are meaningful for the right driver

At a time of high oil prices, the card’s gas-related discounts will likely catch the eye of Canadian drivers who regularly fill up at Shell stations.

Once you link your Tangerine Rewards World Elite Mastercard to a Shell Go+ account, you’ll be eligible for savings worth up to 10 cents per litre when paying for fuel with the card.

The full discount value only applies to premium gas purchases, and part of it gets paid out in Scene+ points. Regular gas purchases are only eligible for a 3 c/l discount.

The fuel benefits are already available in Alberta. They’ll be rolled out to the rest of Canada on May 26, 2026.

5. What is Benefinder?

Benefinder is a new management tool built into the Tangerine mobile banking app. It’s exclusive to Tangerine Rewards World Elite Mastercard cardholders and is designed to make rewards and benefits easier to track and access.

Tangerine says Benefinder provides access to all Scene+ partners and perks. In addition to monitoring your points, the tool should also help cardholders find the offers and experiences tied to your card.

Without access to Benefinder, we can’t fully evaluate it yet. And, because the tool s new and still in its early stages, functionality may change over time.

That said, Benefinder could solve a real problem if it makes the card’s benefits easier to find and use. Credit card perks are only valuable if cardholders know they exist and remember to take advantage of them.

Conclusion

Essentially, the Tangerine Rewards World Elite Mastercard asks fans of Tangerine’s flexible no-fee cash-back cards to pay $120 for a Scene+ version with richer perks.

For cardholders who use the lounge passes, insurance and potential Shell savings, the card may be worth the annual fee. The welcome bonus also makes the first-year value easier to justify.

Whether it’s the best Tangerine card for everyday spending depends on what you value more: cash back or Scene+ points. It also depends on whether you’re willing to sacrifice a better base rate on a no-fee card for a higher selected-category earn rate on a card with more benefits.
