Aeroplan credit card fees are increasing — here’s whether the new perks make up for it

Air Canada announced a major refresh to Aeroplan's co-branded credit cards taking effect January 12, 2027:

  • 15% off the points needed for eligible Air Canada flight reward base fares (already available as a promotional offer, but becomes a standard benefit on January 12).

  • A new twice-yearly travel credit through the AC Wallet.

  • Expanded Maple Leaf Lounge and Priority Security access (Premium cardholders only).

  • 4th night and 4th day free benefits on points-redeemed hotel and car rental bookings (at participating providers).

It’s not all good news — fee increases that are also coming your way:

  • Amex's Aeroplan Reserve and Business Reserve climb from $599 to $799.

  • Amex's Aeroplan Card increases from $120 to $150.

  • TD's Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege rises from $599 to $699.

  • TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite increases from $139 to $159.

Amex’s fees will increase on January 12, 2027, while TD’s will go up on January 25th. CIBC cards have yet to announce fee increases for their Aeroplan cards, as of October 5.

Note on annual fee rebates: TD has not released information on whether All-Inclusive or Unlimited accounts will continue to offer a full rebate on their Visa Infinite cards considering the increasing annual fees. When contacted, they said they expected to release an update in November.

The AC Wallet credit, up to $100 annually for Premium cardholders (Aeroplan Reserve or Visa Infinite Privilege cards) and $50 for Core (Visa Infinite cards and the Amex Aeroplan Card), only works on cash bookings — never when cashing in Aeroplan points. The 15% savings benefit does the reverse — it only applies when redeeming points, and unlike the credit, it's identical no matter what Canadian Aeroplan card you have, even those with no annual fee.

Heads up: Both the $100 and $50 credit are split in half — half on January 15 and half on July 15. This means cardholders effectively need to book two separate paid flights within two separate six-month windows to capture the full amount. Travel can take place after the credit expires.

🤓 Nerdy take: Don't let the new $100 credit or the 15% points discount decide which Aeroplan card is worth the fee. Let your booking habits decide. The credit only pays out on cash bookings; the points discount, which is available even on the fee-free Aeroplan cards, only pays out on redemptions. Even fully used, the $100 flight credit covers only half of Amex’s $200 Reserve fee increase. Whether a premium card is worth keeping depends on the other benefits you use, including lounge access — which can still matter when you’re flying on points.

Sweet, juicy deal: Tangerine just boosted the welcome bonus for its World Elite card

The Tangerine Rewards World Elite Mastercard just got a welcome bonus increase from 30,000 to 50,000 Scene+ points for eligible new cardholders who spend $5,000 within 90 days of account opening. This brings its value up to $500 and is valid until January 31, 2027. That’s worth $500 when redeemed at one cent per point.

This card is Tangerine’s first card with an annual fee. It comes with benefits like 4 complimentary lounge passes, an annual lifestyle credit of 10,000 points, travel insurance and more.

Under the microscope: The 10,000-point annual lifestyle credit is worth $100, but the fine print says you’ll need to spend $30,000 annually to get it!

🤓 Nerdy take: Though the welcome bonus increase brings good value, the effective regular earn rate of 1.5% when redeeming at one cent per point on three preferred categories is lower than the no-fee Tangerine Money-Back Credit Card (2%). The entire case for getting this card rests on its welcome bonus and whether or not you can get the most out of the lounge visits. Once that honeymoon period is over, you could be earning more on its sibling card without paying a $120 annual fee.

BMO’s Blue Rewards members can earn faster on Porter flights (with the right card)

On September 24, 2026, BMO’s Blue Rewards (formerly AIR MILES), named Porter Airlines as its new preferred airline partner. Linking your Blue Rewards and VIPorter accounts unlocks more extra points, with a higher flight earn rate for members who also have an eligible linked BMO card.

Here’s what you can get:

  • A linking bonus: 500 VIPorter points for linking eligible accounts for the first time, plus 500 Blue Points after you earn at least one Blue Point through an eligible earn at a Blue Rewards partner after linking.

  • More points from Porter flights: An additional 0.5 VIPorter points per dollar of eligible spending, rising to 1 additional point per dollar if you have an eligible BO credit or debit card linked to your Blue Rewards account. This is on top of your usual VIPorter earn rate; taxes and fees are excluded.

  • Bonuses when redeeming Blue Points: Earn 1,000 3,750 or 7,500 bonus Blue Points, depending on booking value, when redeeming for eligible Porter flights through Blue Rewards Travel, powered by Expedia.

  • A limited-time BMO bonus: Members with an eligible BMO payment card can earn up to 1,500 additional Blue Points on eligible Porter flight redemptions through Blue Rewards Travel until November 30, 2026.

At the in-store/eGift-card redemption rate of 1,500 Blue Points for $10, the welcome bonus’s 500 Blue Points are worth about $3.33, plus you get 500 VIPorter points. The limited-time bonus is worth up to $10 at that rate. Don’t fret if the values seem low. Remember, this is just for linking accounts, so it’s not really comparable with credit card welcome bonuses that could exceed $1,000.

🤓 Nerdy take: The higher flight earn rate and extra limited-time redemption bonus require an eligible BMO credit card or debit card linked to your Blue Rewards account. It’s more accurate to say BMO cardholders get more from Porter, though other linked members still get extra points and standard redemption bonuses. If you fly Porter often, this may be a reason to look into one of their cards.
