Joint Business Bank Accounts

What is a joint business bank account?

A joint business bank account is a business bank account that is opened and accessed by more than one person. Much like a personal joint account, a joint business bank account allows two or more people in business together to pay cash in, withdraw money and use all the other facilities offered by the business account.

Who might need to open a joint business bank account?

If you have started a partnership business, you might want to open a business account with your partner. The business bank account is for the business, rather than for an individual, and providing you open the account together you will both have access to the account.

What services does a joint business account usually offer?

Each joint business account will differ so it’s important to do your research and compare joint business accounts before taking one out. However, the services they offer will be similar to those offered by any business bank account. These are some of the banking services often offered by joint business bank accounts:

  • Cash deposits
  • Withdrawals through an ATM
  • Debit cards
  • Credit cards
  • Cheques
  • Standing orders
  • Direct debits
  • Bank transfers
  • Online payments
  • Telephone banking
  • Accepting payments

Can I access credit through my joint business bank account?

Some business bank accounts will offer credit cards or overdrafts to customers who pass credit checks. However, there are many that will only offer more basic banking services. The more basic accounts, often offered by challenger banks or online providers, can sometimes be opened very quickly and often with no credit checks.

What should I be aware of before opening a joint business bank account?

If you are going into business with someone, it’s likely that you already trust them – but it goes without saying that you need to be able to trust the person you open a joint business bank account with. Joint business bank accounts will usually give each account holder the same level of access and therefore, your partner could withdraw cash or even run up debts without your consent.

By opening a business bank account with a partner, you will also be financially linked to that person, in terms of your credit score, for example – so that’s worth bearing in mind before you choose this type of account.

Can I open an individual business account that offers access to services for my employees?

Some business accounts will allow you to give certain levels of access to some employees. You may be able to add certain employees to the account to allow them to access certain facilities. Many accounts will also issue debit or credit cards to a number of users employed by your business. This is slightly different from a joint business account and also requires careful thought.
