IHG is one of the largest hotel chains in the world, with brands that include Kimpton, Six Senses, Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express and Intercontinental Hotels & Resorts.

With such a large footprint, it’s likely that you might end up staying — or have already stayed — at an IHG property. But what if your travel plans meet a hiccup and you need to change plans? Below we dive into how to cancel your IHG hotel reservation.

Basics of canceling an IHG hotel reservation

Whether you can cancel your IHG hotel reservation or not will depend on the hotel and type of reservation you made. Holiday Inn’s cancellation policy and Holiday Inn Express’s cancellation policy are different than IHG’s cancellation policy at other properties, so you will want to make sure you read the fine print and understand your hotel’s cancellation policy before booking the hotel.

Even at the same property, different rates can have different cancellation policies. For example, Holiday Inn’s cancellation and refund policy may change based on the specific rate you book.

In a recent search for a stay at the Holiday Inn: Los Angeles-LAX Airport, prices ranged from $118 for a stay in a nonrefundable room, to $166 for the same room with the added ability to cancel for free up to 48 hours before your stay.

If you think you may need to cancel your IHG hotel reservation, you’ll want to make sure that you book a reservation that allows for cancellations and avoid all the nonrefundable options.

How to cancel an IHG hotel reservation

Once you’ve confirmed that your IHG hotel reservation can be canceled, there are a few ways to cancel your IHG hotel reservation.

1. Cancel your IHG hotel reservation online

One way to cancel your IHG hotel reservation is online, by visiting IHG’s Manage Your Stay website.

To cancel your IHG hotel reservation, fill in your hotel booking confirmation number and last name under the “Manage Your Hotel Reservation” section and then click “View Hotel Reservation.”

From there, you’ll want to click the “Modify or Cancel” your reservation button and confirm you’re canceling your reservation. You’ll get a confirmation of your IHG hotel cancellation on the following screen.

You should also receive an e-mail confirmation of your IHG hotel cancellation.

2. Cancel your IHG hotel reservation by phone

Canceling your IHG hotel reservation by phone is straight-forward — call IHG directly at one of the following numbers:

  • U.S. and Canada: 1-888-211-9874.

  • Mexico: 001 800-272-9273.

  • Europe: +800 2222 7172 or +44 1950 499004.

🤓Nerdy Tip

IHG’s Diamond elite members and Kimpton Inner Circle members have access to a dedicated phone number, which you can find by logging into your account.

3. Cancel your IHG hotel reservation using the IHG app

Similar to canceling online, you can cancel via the dedicated IHG app. Once you download the app, log into your IHG account and find the reservation you want to cancel. From here click “View or modify.”

After clicking “View or modify,” scroll down and at the bottom you’ll find a green “Cancel reservation” button. After you click it, you’ll be asked to verify that you want to cancel and once you do you’ll receive confirmation on the app and by email.

How to cancel your IHG hotel reservation if you’ve booked your hotel on a third-party website

If you booked your IHG hotel reservation through a third-party website, like Hotels.com, Capital One Travel, or Booking.com and your booking is refundable, you’ll need to cancel your reservation directly through the third-party website.

Luckily, it’s generally pretty easy to cancel refundable hotel booking through third-party websites — for instance, on Hotels.com you simply find your reservation on the website or an app and can quickly connect to an AI chat assistant who will cancel the booking at your request.

Bottom line

The first step to canceling an IHG hotel reservation is to make sure that your booking allows for cancellation, so be sure to avoid non-refundable options if your travel plans might change.

For IHG hotel bookings that you make directly through IHG, you can cancel on the IHG website, by calling IHG directly or within the IHG app. If you made your IHG hotel reservation through a third-party website, like Hotels.com, you’ll need to follow the third-party website’s protocols for canceling hotel reservations.
