Methodology

NerdWallet Canada selects the best credit cards based on overall consumer value as well as their suitability for specific kinds of consumers. Factors in our evaluation methodology include each card’s earning rates, rewards structure (such as flat-rate or bonus categories), annual fee, redemption options, promotional APR period for purchases, bonus offers for new cardholders, and noteworthy features such as insurance, loyalty bonuses or the ability to choose one’s own rewards categories.

How TD Bank credit cards work

Toronto-Dominion Bank, more commonly known as TD Bank, is one of Canada’s leading financial institutions. It offers a variety of credit cards designed for different consumers — from students and newcomers to business owners and frequent travellers.

General types of TD Bank credit cards

TD Bank issues its own bank credit cards, as well as several co-branded credit cards in partnership with Aeroplan, the popular loyalty program of Canada’s largest airline, Air Canada.

TD Bank offers over a dozen cards tailored for different needs:

  • TD Bank cash-back cardsCash-back credit cards earn a set amount of money back for each eligible purchase.

  • TD Bank travel credit cards. These cards earn TD Rewards points and often include travel perks such as airport lounge access, priority boarding, and travel insurance.

  • TD Bank Aeroplan credit cards: Co-branded cards that earn Aeroplan points to be used when flying Air Canada.

  • TD Bank general rewards cards: Rewards credit cards earn points through TD’s proprietary loyalty program, which can be redeemed for travel, merchandise, gift cards, and more.

  • TD Bank business credit cards. These cards can help business owners separate business from personal spending, and earn rewards.

  • TD Bank student credit cards. Student credit cards often have lower interest rates, low or no annual fees and can help build credit.

  • TD Bank low-interest credit cards. These cards have lower-than-average interest rates for those who want to minimize debt or may carry a balance.

  • TD Bank U.S. dollar card. A U.S. dollar card allows you to make purchases in American currency without paying a foreign transaction fee.

Common features of TD Bank credit cards

Available as Visa cards

At this time, all TD Bank credit cards are affiliated with the Visa network. This means TD Bank credit card holders have access to the top-tier Visa Infinite cards, if they qualify. TD Bank does not currently have Mastercard or American Express options.

Average interest rates

Most of TD Bank credit cards come with an interest rate of 21.99% for purchases, and 22.99% for cash advances. However, the issuer also offers low interest cards that range from 11.99% to 14.99%.

Annual fees are common

Many TD Bank credit cards charge an annual fee, although a few do not. An annual fee may be worth it if the value of the rewards or benefits outweighs the cost.

Additional perks and rewards

You don’t need a top-tier TD Bank card to enjoy extra benefits. Some of TD’s low rate and no-fee credit cards include perks like rental car discounts, purchase security and extended warranty protection, and the ability to earn accelerated rewards at participating Starbucks stores.

How to choose the best TD bank credit card for you

When choosing any credit card, be sure to look for the eligibility requirements. It doesn’t make sense to apply for a credit card that has age, location, income or credit score requirements you can’t satisfy.

  • Annual fees. Cards that charge annual fees tend to have more valuable rewards. Be sure that the rewards you’ll earn offset the cost of carrying it.

  • Interest rate. If you tend to keep a balance on your card, look for a low-interest card to reduce ongoing costs.

  • Rewards or cash back. Rewards programs can offer more value than cash back, but may also be more complex to redeem.

Who should consider a TD Bank credit card?

TD Bank credit cards can be a good fit for a variety of users, especially those who already bank with TD.

If you’re already a customer, the application process may be easier since TD already has some of your financial information. Existing customers may also qualify for first-year annual fee rebates on select cards, including some premium options.

If your goal is straightforward cash-back rewards, take a look atTD Cash Back Visa Infinite* Card and TD Cash Back Visa* Card. These options reward you with a percentage of cash back on everyday purchases, such as groceries, gas, electric vehicle charging, public transit, recurring bill payments, streaming, digital gaming, and media purchases.

If you prefer flexible travel rewards instead, consider TD Rewards credit cards. These options earn TD Rewards points on purchases, which can be redeemed for travel, gift cards, merchandise, Amazon.ca purchases, or even statement credits.

Travellers who like to book through Expedia will also find extra value, as TD Rewards cardholders get exclusive access to Expedia For TD — a dedicated travel portal offering discounts, limited-time promotions, and additional ways to earn and redeem points at the best value.

For frequent Air Canada flyers, TD’s co-branded Aeroplan credit cards can be particularly appealing. Cardholders can earn Aeroplan points that can be used to land cheaper fares, luxury perks, and more.

How to get a TD Bank credit card

  1. The easiest way to apply for a TD Bank credit card is to start on the bank’s website. Once you’ve selected the card you want, just select the “Apply now” button.

  2. You’ll then be asked if you’re an existing client or not. If you’re already a TD Bank customer, applying for a card will be a faster process. You’ll be asked to log in to your account and much of the credit card application will be pre-filled based on your account details.

  3. If you’re not an existing client you’ll need to be a permanent resident of Canada and the age of majority in your territory or province. To apply online, you’ll also need an email address. If you don’t have an email address or don’t want to apply online you can go into a branch, book an in-person appointment online or speak to someone via phone.

  4. If a specific income is required to apply for the card, TD will highlight the card’s income requirements. Note that business credit cards may have stricter requirements and you’ll generally have to prove that you own a business.

  5. You’ll then need to consent to the terms and conditions and provide personal information, such as your name and income. While you don’t have to provide your social insurance number (SIN), it will speed up the application process especially if the bank wants to do a credit check.

It can take up to two business days to know if you’ve been approved for a TD Bank credit card, and then another 7 to 10 business days to receive the card via the mail.
