TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card full review

The TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card is a travel rewards credit card that earns Aeroplan points from Air Canada’s loyalty program. Cardholders earn one Aeroplan point per each eligible dollar spent with accelerated rates on grocery store, gas station and Air Canada purchases.

Benefits of the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card

The TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card earns Aeroplan points and offers robust travel insurance. You’ll also get free checked bags on Air Canada flights and NEXUS fee rebates of up to $100 every 48 months. Access to the Visa Infinite program, which offers a 24/7 concierge and gourmet food and wine event opportunities, is also included.

Drawbacks of the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card

While this card’s $139 annual fee is on par with other rewards cards, some cards don’t charge annual fees. The TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card also has an annual income requirement: $60,000 for an individual or $100,000 for a household, which may exclude some applicants.

Airport lounge passes are only available once per year — and only on flights booked with Aeroplan points.

Is TD Bank reliable and secure?

The Toronto Dominion Bank, or TD Bank, offers personal and business banking services to over 27 million customers worldwide. Its branch and ATM network spans every province and territory except Nunavut.

TD Bank has Canada Deposit Insurance Corporation (CDIC) insurance, which covers customer deposits up to $100,000 in the unlikely event TD goes under. TD Bank credit card transactions are also protected from losses that result from unauthorized transactions through Visa Zero Liability.

TD Bank customer satisfaction ratings

TD Bank ranks 11th (and below industry average) in customer satisfaction with credit card issuers, according to J.D. Power’s 2022 Canada Credit Card Satisfaction Study, a survey of 6,478 cardholders in Canada [1]. Card issuers were rated on their benefits and services, communication, card terms, customer support and rewards. The credit card issuers with the highest customer satisfaction ratings in the survey were Tangerine Bank, Canadian Tire and American Express.

TD Bank had a Trustpilot rating of 1.3 out of 5 possible stars, based on more than 1,400 customer reviews, at the time of this writing.

TD Bank had a Better Business Bureau rating of 1.24 out of 5 possible stars, based on over 50 customer reviews, at the time of this writing.

TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card details and eligibility

Who qualifies for the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card?

You must be a Canadian resident and at least the age of majority for your province or territory to be eligible for the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card. You’ll also need to meet credit score and income requirements.

Approximate credit score needed for approval

Canadian credit card issuers rarely disclose required credit scores, which makes it hard to know your chances of approval when comparing credit cards. It also means any score suggestion we make would be our best guess — which may not be accurate and could result in card application rejections. We don’t want that.

Suggesting that you’d need a “good” or “excellent” score would also be confusing, because the meaning of those terms can vary depending on the rating system card issuers use.

Instead, we’ll tell you what we do know: higher scores have better chances of approval — that’s true no matter what type of credit you’re applying for. Visit our “What Credit Score is Needed for a Credit Card?” page to learn more.

Value of the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card’s welcome offer: $1,300+

The intro offer for the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card includes up to 50,000 Aeroplan points and no annual fee for the first year of card membership. The waived annual fee saves you $139 in your first year of card membership. But what about the bonus Aeroplan points?

According to NerdWallet analysis, the average value of 1 Aeroplan point is 2.23 cents. So, the 50,000 Aeroplan point welcome offer for this card is worth about $1,115.

(A quick caveat: you don’t get 50,000 Aeroplan points just for opening the account. You must spend at least $1,500 within the first 90 days of account ownership and $7,500 within the first year.)

You also get NEXUS fee rebates of up to $100 every 48 months with the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite. Combine this with the first year of free card ownership and the 50,000 bonus Aeroplan points, and you’re looking at a value of over $1,300.

You also get complimentary checked bags on Air Canada flights — which typically cost $30 per bag for one-way economy tickets across Canada, the US and the Caribbean. Plus, the travel insurance that comes with the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite could be worth thousands should you ever need to put it to use.

Is the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card worth it?

It could be — but it all comes down to your spending habits. If one Aeroplan point has an average value of 2.23 cents, you’d need to earn 6,233 Aeroplan points to recoup the card’s annual fee of $139.

The TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card offers 1 to 1.5 Aeroplan points per $1 spent on eligible purchases. To earn the 6,233 Aeroplan points needed to offset the card’s annual fee, you’d need to spend at least $4,155 — and that’s money spent in this card’s highest earning category of 1.5 points per $1.

Point value breakdown

NerdWallet searched more than 75 flights in 2021 and 2022 to determine the average value for Air Canada flights.

More specifically, you can expect to get:

  • Around 1.69 cents in value per Aeroplan point for economy class awards on Air Canada.

  • Pool your Aeroplan points. The Aeroplan Family Sharing program lets you combine your Aeroplan points with up to eight family members.
  • Fly Air Canada. Primary and additional cardholders and up to eight travel companions get free checked bags when flying with Air Canada.
  • Use your card for car rentals. To be covered by this card’s vehicle rental insurance coverage, you must book the rental using your TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card.
  • Pay your bill on time. Fail to make your minimum payment twice in 12 months, and TD will enforce a penalty APR of 24.99%. This penalty APR will stay in place until you’ve made 12 consecutive payments on time. Your account may fall into default if you continue to miss payments.

Alternatives to the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card

If you already bank with TD and you’d like to keep your accounts under one roof, the TD Aeroplan Visa Platinum Card might be worth a look — it also earns Aeroplan points but has a much lower annual fee. Or, if you don’t feel that loyal to Air Canada, consider the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card: a TD travel card that earns TD points instead of Aeroplan rewards.

If travel rewards don’t appeal, numerous card alternatives exist, including cash back cards, cards with no annual fees and more.

Reasons you might want a different card

The TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card has plenty to offer, but there are a few circumstances where it won’t be ideal:

  • You don’t want a credit card with an annual fee.
  • You don’t travel Air Canada very often.
  • You don’t meet the minimum income requirement.
  • You’d prefer to earn a different reward, like cash back.
