The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express is a business rewards card with a unique set of perks that can deliver high value for the right cardholder. With a $0 annual fee, this card is a strong choice for frugal rewards collectors. Terms apply.

But to get the most value out of this card, you need to plan and spend strategically. Here are some tips for getting the most out of The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express.

Size up your spending

First, you'll need to spend enough to earn the welcome bonus. Earn 15,000 Membership Rewards® points after you spend $3,000 in eligible purchases on the Card within your first 3 months of Card Membership. Terms Apply.

The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express is a flat-rate earning card, which means that you earn the same amount of points on all of your purchases regardless of what category the spending falls into. You will earn 2 points for every dollar you spend, which is relatively high for a flat-rate card. But this applies only to the first $50,000 you spend each year, after which your earning rate drops down to 1 point per dollar. Terms apply.

If you plan to keep your annual spending on this card to below $50,000, then it offers good value. But if you go far beyond that, there are other cards that can provide a better return on your dollar.

Take advantage of the 0% intro APR

Any small-business owner knows the struggle of dealing with financing and credit, which is why one of the strongest perks this card has to offer is the introductory annual percentage rate: 0% intro APR on Purchases for 12 months, and then the ongoing APR of 13.24%-19.24% Variable APR. Terms apply.

That means The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express is great if you need to finance a large purchase for your business but don’t want to get buried under high interest payments. Cardholders will still be responsible for making minimum payments on their balance, and interest will be charged for any balance that remains after the first year.

Do business with FedEx, Dell and DocuSign

The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express can get you up to $300 back on purchases in the first three months of card membership, but only if you shop at three merchants. Get a $100 statement credit for qualifying charges with FedEx, another $100 for charges with Dell and another $100 for purchases from DocuSign. Terms apply.

Expand your ‘Buying Power’

No matter how carefully they budget, any small-business owner can feel the pinch of an unexpected expense. The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express can help you manage these surprise expenses with a benefit called Expanded Buying Power.

This perk allows cardholders to spend over their credit limit for a given month without incurring a penalty, and still allows cardholders to collect Membership Reward points on the money they spend. Terms apply.

The amount of spending you can do above your credit limit will vary from cardholder to cardholder and is based on factors such as your credit score and payment history. The amount you spend above your credit limit will be due in full at the end of your billing cycle.

Don’t shop abroad

A major downside of this card is that it charges a hefty 2.7% foreign transaction fee. So if you’re planning on doing lots of international travel, you might be better off with a card such as the Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card, which has no foreign transaction fees.

Don’t go for cash back

American Express Membership Rewards can offer a lot of value when spent on travel or gift cards, but when it comes to cash back, returns on The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express don’t measure up. Yes, you can redeem your points for cash back in the form of a statement credit against your balance, but your points will be worth only 0.6 cent each if you do. That’s a much lower redemption rate than what you could find on comparable cards. Terms apply.

If cash back is your priority, American Express Blue Business Cash™ Card has many of the same perks as The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express, but the American Express Blue Business Cash™ Card offers 2% cash back on the first $50,000 spent annually instead of Membership Rewards points that don’t translate well to cash. Terms apply.

The bottom line

The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express is a strong business rewards card if your priority is flat-rate earning and 0% intro APR. To make the most of this card, make sure your spending stays around $50,000 a year or less, and be prepared to take advantage of the 0% intro APR and Expanded Buying Power. Terms apply.
