Family Breakdown Cover FAQs
Why would I need family breakdown cover?
Breaking down is always a stressful experience and protecting your family members from the stress, expense and potential dangers of breaking down without roadside recovery is an attractive prospect. If you are part of a household with several drivers, there are options that can ensure that you are all covered on a single breakdown cover policy.
What do family breakdown cover policies include?
This depends very much of the level of cover you opt to take out for your family breakdown cover policy. The most basic level of cover usually includes roadside recovery, which involves calling out an engineer to try to fix your car by the side of the road if you break down. Roadside recovery will also usually include recovery of your vehicle to a nearby garage if necessary.
If you would like extras added to your basic breakdown recovery policy, you will usually be given the option to increase the level of cover.
Home start is a popular option as this allows drivers to call out an engineer when their car won’t start at home. National recovery is also popular as this includes recovery of the driver, the vehicle and the passengers to any UK address, in most cases.
Some policies will give you the option to add on these extra levels of cover, while others will offer one level of cover only.
Why might I want to take out family breakdown cover?
If you have adult children living at home, or at university, for example, you may find that it is cheaper to include these family members on one breakdown cover policy, as opposed to taking out separate policies. Many households have three or four cars or drivers and taking out a single family breakdown cover policy can simplify matters and save cash.
What are the different types of family breakdown cover?
Many breakdown cover providers will offer you the choice of naming drivers that live in your home, who you would like to include on the policy, or alternatively naming the cars you would like to include. If you name the drivers, they are likely to then be covered regardless of which car they are driving, so this can be useful if your family shares cars. If you choose to name the cars instead, each car will usually be covered regardless of who is driving them.
Are there eligibility criteria for family breakdown policies?
As with any breakdown cover policy, it’s always important to read the small print to ensure that the policy suits your needs. There will often be a limit to the number of family members you can include on a single policy. There will also be eligibility criteria for the vehicles, such as size and age.
Will taking out family breakdown cover save me money?
It is likely to, but you will need to do some research to see whether separate policies might still be the best option for your circumstances. As well as the possibility of saving some money, including family members on a single policy could also help to remove the hassle involved with finding, managing and renewing several policies.
