About Geico home insurance

Geico is one of the biggest insurers in the country, yet it technically does not offer its own home insurance. Instead it partners with third-party insurers. Customers won’t know which company the homeowners policy is from until they get a quote — which can make for a confusing customer experience. But homeowners insurance customers who already have a Geico auto insurance policy may qualify for a discount on their car insurance.

We make every effort to rate each company we review. However, we’re sometimes unable to provide a NerdWallet star rating for insurers that work with multiple third parties to underwrite their policies. That’s because the quality of the policy you get may vary depending on the coverage options, financial strength and other factors of each separate underwriting company.

Where Geico stands out

Savings for Geico auto policyholders. Geico is one of the cheapest car insurers for some U.S. drivers, according to NerdWallet’s rate analysis — and by getting your home insurance through Geico too, you may be eligible for further discounts.

Availability. Because Geico works with so many third parties, it’s able to sell homeowners insurance in all states.

Where Geico falls short

Limited information about policies. Coverage and discounts vary from one third party to another, so Geico’s website is short on details about which options you might have for your homeowners policy. You’ll need to get a quote to see which company you’re matched with and the coverage options available to you.

Convenience of claim filing. You’ll need to reach out to the insurer that underwrites your policy, not to Geico, in order to submit a claim for theft or home damage.

How Geico home insurance works

While Geico is best known for its auto insurance, it does provide the option for customers to purchase homeowners insurance through its website and agents. Geico functions as a broker and matches customers with third-party home insurers through the Geico Insurance Agency. This means that a homeowners insurance policy purchased from Geico will actually be from another company.

If you already have car insurance from Geico, purchasing a homeowners policy may qualify you for an auto insurance discount. However, Geico doesn’t allow you to choose the insurer you’ll be matched with. And, once purchased, you may need to work with the third party directly to manage your policy and file a claim — so there’s little convenience from bundling.

🤓Nerdy Tip

We recommend getting home insurance quotes from at least three companies to find the best value on the coverage you need.

State availability

Geico can match you with a homeowners insurance company in all 50 states and Washington, D.C.

Availability may change at any time. Coverage may not be available to all homeowners in a given state.

Coverage

You can customize your homeowners policy with numerous add-ons, but below are the types of coverage that generally come standard:

  • Dwelling. Pays to repair or rebuild the structure of your home.

  • Other structures. Covers damage to unattached structures such as sheds or fences.

  • Personal property. Pays to repair or replace personal belongings such as furniture or clothing.

  • Loss of use. Pays for hotel stays, restaurant meals or other expenses if you have to live elsewhere while your home undergoes covered repairs.

  • Personal liability. Covers legal expenses and damages if you're responsible for injuries to other people or their property.

  • Medical payments. Covers injuries to guests in your home, regardless of fault.

Beyond these standard coverage types, your options for customizing your policy may differ depending on which company Geico matches you with.

Discounts

Discounts from third-party homeowners insurers will vary, but a few discounts are available through Geico Insurance Agency. If you’re already a Geico auto insurance customer, you could get a discount on your auto policy for getting a homeowners policy through the company.

Other discounts may be available for homes with:

  • Home security systems.

  • Smoke detectors and fire extinguishers.

🤓Nerdy Tip

Another way to lower your premium is to raise your homeowners insurance deductible, the amount that will be subtracted from your payout if you ever file a claim. Just be sure to choose an amount you’d feel comfortable covering out of your own pocket.

Consumer experience

Website: You can use Geico’s website to get a homeowners insurance quote from one of the company’s affiliates or to learn about various types of insurance. The website offers a list of contact numbers for the companies in its homeowners insurance network, which includes well-known insurers like The Hartford, Liberty Mutual and Travelers.

App: The Geico app lets you view your homeowners policy information. You may have access to a mobile app with more robust features depending on the home insurer you’re matched with.

Claims: To file a claim, you'll need to contact the partner company that underwrites your policy. Some offer online claims reporting, while others may require you to file over the phone. Geico has a list of phone numbers and links for all its partners on its website.

Customer service: Geico has a chatbot that can help with quick questions. You can also log in to send direct messages to the company, or call 800-241-8098 with questions about your homeowners insurance policy.

The bottom line

If you’ve already got Geico car insurance — or you’re interested in switching — it’s worth getting a quote from the Geico Insurance Agency to see whether the home insurance it offers is right for you.

Geico vs. competitors

Geico vs. Allstate home insurance

The biggest difference between Geico and Allstate home insurance is that Allstate offers its own policies while Geico sells through third parties. That means Allstate offers more details about coverage and discounts on its website so you know what to expect before you get a quote. Plus, you’ll file any claims directly with Allstate.

However, there are plenty of similarities. Both Allstate and Geico are among the biggest insurers in the U.S., and their policies are widely available across the country. They both offer the convenience of quotes online or by phone, and they’ll give you a discount if you bundle your car and homeowners policies.

Geico vs. State Farm home insurance

The key difference between Geico and State Farm home insurance is where their policies come from. State Farm writes its own homeowners insurance while Geico offers policies through third parties. You won’t know which company is actually insuring you until you get a quote on the Geico website (or through its call center).

One nice perk that comes with State Farm homeowners policies is extended replacement cost coverage for your dwelling. Dwelling coverage is the part of your policy that pays to repair or replace the structure of your home. Extended replacement coverage is a cushion that raises your dwelling limit in case it costs more than expected to rebuild your home after a covered disaster. The home insurance company Geico pairs you with may or may not offer this coverage — and if it does, it may cost extra.
