We believe everyone should be able to make financial decisions with
confidence. While we don't cover every company or financial product on
the market, we work hard to share a wide range of offers and objective
editorial perspectives.
So how do we make money? Our partners compensate us for advertisements that
appear on our site. This compensation helps us provide tools and services -
like free credit score access and monitoring. With the exception of
mortgage, home equity and other home-lending products or services, partner
compensation is one of several factors that may affect which products we
highlight and where they appear on our site. Other factors include your
credit profile, product availability and proprietary website methodologies.
However, these factors do not influence our editors' opinions or ratings, which are based on independent research and analysis. Our partners cannot
pay us to guarantee favorable reviews. Here is a list of our partners.
AmEx Platinum Hikes Fee to $895, Adds Hundreds in Credits
The card offers a shiny new design as well as new partners like lululemon and Oura — but its yearly cost is going up by $200.

The American Express Platinum Card® is updating its existing benefits and adding some new ones — but it’ll cost you. The annual fee is going up by $200.
New cardholders who apply on Sept. 18, 2025, or later will be charged the new annual fee of $895 (see rates and fees) . Existing cardholders will be charged the new fee at their next renewal date on or after Jan. 2, 2026.
Otherwise, both new and existing cardholders will have access to the card’s updated benefits beginning Sept. 18.
NerdWallet's ratings are determined by our editorial team. The scoring formula takes into account the type of card being reviewed (such as cash back, travel or balance transfer) and the card's rates, fees, rewards and other features.
The American Express Platinum Card® is marking the occasion with a limited-edition mirror card design for new applicants that’s also available to existing cardholders upon request. It’s not the metal card’s first glow-up — back in 2022, artists Julie Mehretu and Kehinde Wiley created two designs still available today.
Beyond its physical appearance, the American Express Platinum Card® is changing a number of its perks.

Dear AmEx Platinum, We Need to Talk: You’ve always been bougie and expensive, but this is taking it to a new level. ... We had some great times, but seeing you like this reminds me why I left you to begin with. I’m sure someone out there can’t wait to show off their new Lululemon leggings and Oura Ring while they tell their friends how much value you bring to their life. But that someone can’t be me.

Why I’m Actually Excited About the New AmEx Platinum Changes: This new version of the card feels like a natural evolution of what made it great in the first place. It's still a status symbol, still offers unparalleled lounge access and it still provides the kind of service that makes you feel valued as a customer. And sure, AmEx may now be charging more, but they're also delivering more.

Why We’re Keeping Both an AmEx Platinum and a Sapphire Reserve: Ultimately, holding two premium travel cards is worth it for us. Both cards have some shortcomings, but my boyfriend and I are able to offset the annual fees with the cards’ credits and points. Plus, we have more redemption options with two separate sets of transfer partners. And importantly, only premium travel cards could give us access to airport lounges and automatic elite status with several different hotel loyalty programs. ... The annual fees are high, but the breadth of travel redemptions and credits we get with both is a luxury that I’m not willing to give up just yet.
