Cheapest car insurance in Texas for full coverage
Auto Club of SoCal is the cheapest car insurance company in Texas for full coverage, with an average rate of $129 a month and $1,548 a year.
After an accident, full coverage car insurance helps you to pay for injuries and property damage you cause others, as well as most types of damage to your car. Auto loans and leases usually require you to carry full coverage. Once you’ve paid off your car, you could drop full coverage and lower your insurance rates.

Why is car insurance so expensive in Texas — and what can you do about it?
As accidents have gone up and claims have gotten more expensive, even drivers in Texas who usually avoid accidents and tickets can see their car insurance rates get higher.
At a time like this when rates are high, reliable tricks like raising your policy’s deductibles, dropping some coverage on an older car and comparing quotes from a few insurers before buying or renewing a policy could all help you keep your costs relatively low.

Cheapest car insurance in Texas for minimum coverage
State Farm is the cheapest car insurance company in Texas for minimum coverage, with an average rate of $43 a month and $516 a year.
Texas requires only liability insurance to drive legally. Liability insurance helps pay for the injuries that you cause to others, but not damage to your own car. If you cause an accident and you have only liability insurance, you would need to repair or replace your car on your own.

| State Farm | 4.8/5 | $147 |

Texas requires drivers to carry liability insurance . You’ll often see the minimum requirements written in shorthand as 30/60/25. This means in Texas you must buy at least:
$30,000 bodily injury/death liability coverage per person.
$60,000 bodily injury/death liability coverage per accident.
$25,000 property damage liability coverage per accident.
Liability car insurance covers the cost of any damage, injuries or deaths you cause in a car accident, up to your policy’s pre-set limits.
If you cause an accident, liability insurance kicks in to pay for others’ injury treatment and property damage, up to your limits. It doesn’t pay for your own injuries or vehicle repairs.
In many cases, the legal minimum insurance won’t be enough to cover costs if you cause an accident.
If you total someone’s luxury car, for example, their repair costs would easily exceed a $25,000 ceiling. Any damage that surpasses your limits has to come out of your own pocket. That’s why for many drivers it’s wise to select higher limits, such as 100/300/50.
Cheapest car insurance companies in Texas by driving record
Your rates are likely to go up after an accident or driving violation. If you have multiple violations on your record and you’re having a hard time finding an insurer, you might want to check out some of the best high-risk car insurance companies.

State Farm has the cheapest car insurance rates in Texas for drivers who have been in an at-fault accident, with an average rate of $190 per month and $2,279 per year for full coverage.
An accident can affect your car insurance costs for several years, although the exact length of time depends on your location and your insurer. But not all insurance companies use the same pricing model, so it can be hard to predict how much insurance will increase after an accident. You might find cheaper options if you shop around.

Cheapest car insurance in Texas by city
Your ZIP code is so important to your car insurance rates that even moving to a new neighborhood in your city can change what you pay for coverage. In general, cities see more vandalism, theft and accidents than rural areas. All of these differences mean that drivers living in cities could expect higher insurance rates than folks in small towns.
If you’re thinking about moving, estimate what your rates could be in your new home. This could help you avoid being surprised by a higher insurance bill once you’re settled in.

More Nerdy Perspective
Auto insurance in Texas tends to be pricey, so check your policy for coverage you don’t need. I saved money on my car insurance premium by dropping roadside assistance and towing coverage, which I already had through my AAA membership.
Cheapest car insurance rates in Texas by age
Insurers use your age to help them determine how likely you are to make a claim. This is why younger, newly licensed drivers who have less experience on the road see much higher rates than people in their 40s and 50s who have often been driving much longer.
As you get older, it’s a good idea to compare quotes before you renew your coverage. You might find that the cheapest company when you were younger stops being a bargain once you’re older.
Auto Club of SoCal has the cheapest car insurance rates for young drivers in Texas, with an average rate of $247 per month and $2,967 per year for full coverage.
Prices can be sky-high in your 20s, but tend to come down as drivers get more experience on the road. Still, some companies may offer relatively cheap car insurance for young drivers, so it's best to shop around to find them.

Texas Farm Bureau has an average rate of $2,736 a year or $230 a month for a full coverage policy that covers the new driver and two parents, according to NerdWallet’s May 2026 analysis.
You’ll pay more to add a young driver to your policy, but the difference in cost afterwards depends on the vehicle that young driver uses, the car’s age, whether the driver has their own vehicle and the number of other drivers who are covered by the policy.

Auto insurance alternatives in Texas
If you’re having trouble getting insured in Texas due to your driving record or credit score, look into the Texas Automobile Insurance Plan Association (TAIPA). It may be able to connect you with a company that will cover you.
To qualify, a TAIPA certified insurance agent must submit the application for you, and you must have been rejected by at least two insurance companies in the last 60 days.
In addition to TAIPA, there are a few other legally acceptable alternatives you can choose in Texas, including:
Filing a surety bond with the Department of Public Safety in at least the same amounts as a liability policy. You must file the bond jointly with at least two people, called “sureties,” who own property in the state. The sureties, or people filing the bond, must together own property worth at least twice as much as the amount of the bond.
Making a $55,000 deposit with the state comptroller in either cash or securities.
Making a $55,000 deposit with the county judge where your vehicle is registered, in either cash or cashier’s check.
Qualifying for a certificate of self-insurance through the Department of Public Safety. You promise to pay up to the same amount covered by minimum liability insurance requirements if you cause an accident with one of your cars. This option applies if you own 25 vehicles or more.

Methodology
NerdWallet averaged rates based on public filings obtained by pricing analytics company Quadrant Information Services. We examined rates for 35-year-old men and women for all ZIP codes in all 50 states and Washington, D.C.
Unless otherwise stated, our analysis was based on our base driver profile, which has the following characteristics and coverage levels:
35 years old
Single. Male or female.
2023 Toyota Camry LE
12,000 annual miles driven.
Good driving record and credit
No moving violations.
"Good driving" discount applied.
Good credit-based insurance score.
Bodily injury liability coverage
$100,000 per person. $300,000 per crash.
Property damage liability coverage
$50,000 per crash.
Uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage
$100,000 per person. $300,000 per crash.
Collision coverage
With a $1,000 deductible.
Comprehensive coverage
With a $1,000 deductible.
For all other driver profiles, we used the same assumptions, with the following exceptions:
We changed the credit tier from “good” to “poor,” as reported to the insurer, to see rates for drivers with poor credit. These rates are based on credit score approximations and do not account for proprietary scoring criteria used by insurance providers.
For drivers with one at-fault crash, we added a single at-fault crash that happened six months ago, resulting in $10,000 in property damage and no bodily injury claim.
For drivers with a DUI, we added a single drunken driving violation that happened six months ago.
For drivers with a ticket, we added a single speeding violation for driving 16 mph over the speed limit.
For young drivers, we considered 20-year-olds with good credit and no driving violations.
For millennial drivers, we considered 40-year-olds with good credit and no driving violations.
For senior drivers, we considered 70-year-olds with good credit and no driving violations.
These are median rates, and your rate will vary based on your personal details, state and insurance provider. Sample drivers had the minimum required coverage by law in each state. Some policies include additional coverage at the insurer’s discretion.
Although it’s one of the largest insurers in the country, Liberty Mutual is not included in our rates analysis due to a lack of publicly available information.
Young drivers methodology
In May 2026 we found the cost of adding a newly licensed driver to an existing full coverage policy. Our base profile assumes two existing policyholders — a 50-year-old male driver and 45-year-old female driver — sharing one policy.
We showed the cost effect of adding a 20-year-old driver to this policy, to stay consistent with our 20-year-old young driver profile that is covered by a standalone policy. The 20-year-old shares a 2023 Toyota Camry with the family, and the new driver uses the vehicle 20% of the time.
