Starting Oct. 21, 2020, the card will offer:

  • A $60 credit for new cardholders: After the first on-time payment, you'll will receive a $5 statement credit each month for one year when you use the card to pay for qualifying music and video streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, Disney+ and Spotify. Exclusions and terms apply. The statement credits must be earned within the first 18 months of opening the account.

  • Contactless card payments and a new design: The Journey Student Rewards from Capital One is also undergoing a design change, from ruby red to dark blue. The new design will feature the contactless payment option, which can offer a safer, no-touch way to pay at the register. New cardholders will get this updated version upon applying. Existing cardholders will get the new version once their current card approaches its expiration date.

In addition to the streaming service credit, the card earns 1% cash back on all purchases, plus a 0.25% bonus every month you pay on time. That adds up to 1.25% in cash back, a decent rate for a student credit card.

In recent months, Capital One has made temporary changes to other cards in its portfolio to accommodate shifts in spending habits amid the pandemic. And the Journey Student Rewards from Capital One is the latest Capital One card to go contactless.
