The Navy Federal Credit Union® More Rewards American Express® Credit Card is upgrading its rewards structure, giving cardholders more points at restaurants and creating a new bonus category for transit spending.
The $0-annual-fee card is also adding a limited-time 0% introductory APR offer for 12 months, according to Justin Zeidman, head of credit card products at Navy Federal Credit Union. The upgrades are coming in September 2019, but the issuer has not yet confirmed an exact date.
How the new rewards structure compares to the old:
NEW REWARDS (Begins Sept. 2019) | OLD REWARDS (Until Sept. 2019) | |
---|---|---|
Gas stations | 3 points per dollar spent | 3 points per dollar spent |
Supermarkets | 3 points per dollar spent | 3 points per dollar spent |
Restaurants (includes purchases through third-party apps like Grubhub and Postmates) | 3 points per dollar spent | 2 points per dollar spent |
Transit | 3 points per dollar spent | 1 point per dollar spent (not previously a bonus category) |
Other purchases | 1 point per dollar spent | 1 point per dollar spent |
The new features make it easier for more cardholders to collect rewards on everyday spending.
“As we think about the diversity of the member experience that exists among Navy Federal members, we realized that the gas 3X multiplier was sort of leaving out a segment of members who are commuting to work by metro or by bus,” Zeidman said. “We really wanted to make sure that we were creating a value proposition that rewards all of our members for all the ways they eat and for all the ways they commute.”
The transit category will include ridesharing services, tolls, ferries, parking lots and garages, limos, taxis, bus lines, charters, tour buses and rail lines.
All other features will remain the same, including the $0 annual fee and the welcome offer: Earn 30,000 bonus points when you spend $3,000 within 90 days of account opening. Expires on Jan. 01, 2025.
Although the card will benefit more commuters — including those with average credit — only those eligible for Navy Federal membership can get this card. Membership is limited to current or former members of the military, Department of Defense employees and contractors, or their qualifying family members.
