Why We Like ItSoFi®’s online Checking and Savings account offers competitive interest rates on both checking and savings and customers receive their paychecks up to two days early, have access to a large, free ATM network and the potential to earn a sign-up bonus.
Minimum deposit to open: None.
Other fees you won’t pay include: Overdraft fees, account inactivity fees, replacement debit card fee (even rush) and stop payment fees.
What you should know: While there’s no minimum direct deposit to earn interest on your checking balance, you’ll need to direct deposit at least $1,000 per month to qualify for overdraft coverage and protection and earn the 3.10% annual percentage yield (APY) on your savings.
SoFi says: "Early access to direct deposit funds is based on the timing in which we receive notice of impending payment from the Federal Reserve, which is typically up to two days before the scheduled payment date, but may vary."
"We’ve partnered with Allpoint to provide you with ATM access at any of the 55,000+ ATMs within the Allpoint network. You will not be charged a fee when using an in-network ATM, however, third-party fees may be incurred when using out-of-network ATMs. SoFi’s ATM policies are subject to change at our discretion at any time."
"Overdraft Coverage is a feature automatically offered to SoFi Checking and Savings account holders who receive at least $1,000 or more in Eligible Direct Deposits within a rolling 31 calendar day period on a recurring basis. Eligible Direct Deposit is defined on the SoFi Bank Rate Sheet, available at https://www.sofi.com/legal/banking-rate-sheet. Members enrolled in Overdraft Coverage may be covered for up to $50 in negative balances on SoFi Bank debit card purchases only. Overdraft Coverage does not apply to P2P transfers, bill payments, checks, or other non-debit card transactions. Members with a prior history of unpaid negative balances are not eligible for Overdraft Coverage. Eligibility for Overdraft Coverage is determined by SoFi Bank in its sole discretion. Members can check their enrollment status, if eligible, at any time by logging into their account through the SoFi app or on the SoFi website."

Why We Like ItChime’s broad ATM network, early direct deposit and free overdraft program make it a convenient and useful choice for free checking.
Minimum deposit to open: None.
Other fees you won’t pay include: Overdraft fees.
What you should know: Depending on which of Chime’s retail store partners you choose, you may be charged a fee to deposit cash.
Chime says:
"Early access to direct deposit funds depends on the timing of the submission of the payment file from the payer. We generally make these funds available on the day the payment file is received, which may be up to 2 days earlier than the scheduled payment date."
"Optional services and products may have fees or charges, such as outbound instant transfers, out-of-network transactions, and credit products. Learn more here: chime.com/feesinfo"
"Out-of-network ATM withdrawal and over the counter advance fees may apply except at FCTI® ATMs in a 7-Eleven® or Speedway, or any Allpoint® or Visa® Plus Alliance ATM participating in the Allpoint network."
"SpotMe® on Debit is an optional, no fee overdraft service attached to your Chime Checking Account. To qualify, you must receive $200 or more in qualifying direct deposits to your Chime Checking Account each month and have activated your physical Chime Visa® Debit Card or secured Chime Visa® Credit Card. Qualifying members will be allowed to overdraw their Chime Checking Account up to $20 on debit card purchases and cash withdrawals initially but may later be eligible for a higher limit of up to $200 or more based on Chime Account history, direct deposit frequency and amount, spending activity and other risk-based factors. The SpotMe on Debit limit will be displayed within the Chime mobile app and is subject to change at any time, at Chime’s sole discretion. Although Chime does not charge any overdraft fees for SpotMe on Debit, there may be out-of-network or third-party fees associated with ATM transactions and fees associated with OTC cash withdrawals. SpotMe on Debit will not cover any non-debit card transactions, including ACH transfers, Pay Anyone transfers, or Chime Checkbook transactions. SpotMe on Debit Terms and Conditions."

Why We Like ItIn addition to no monthly fee, Connexus Credit Union offers a really high rate of up to 4.50% APY on its Xtraordinary Checking account — though you’ll need to meet some requirements to earn it. You’ll also get good free ATM access and ATM rebates.
Minimum deposit to open: None.
Other fees you won’t pay include: Overdraft transfer fee.
What you should know: The high APY only applies to balances of $25,000 or less and only if you opt in to e-statements and either spend at least $500 per month or make a minimum of 15 debit card purchases. If you don’t meet the requirement in any given month, you don’t earn interest or ATM fee reimbursements. Also, there is an inactivity fee that kicks in after three months without account activity and with a month-end account balance of less than $100.

Why We Like ItMomentum Checking customers get some solid perks including early direct deposit and Zelle access. Fifth Third also gives customers fee-free access to a nationwide network of ATMs.
Minimum deposit to open: None.
Other fees you won’t pay include: Overdraft protection transfer fee.
What you should know: If you opt out of overdraft coverage entirely, you will avoid all overdraft fees because you won’t be able to overdraft. If you opt in, you can use the fee-free overdraft protection program the bank offers and you get extra time to bring your account back to positive but you’ll also open yourself up to the possibility of being charged a steep overdraft fee if your linked account can’t cover your purchases: $35 per transaction, which can be charged three times per day.

If you’re looking for | Our pick | Why it isn’t one of our top picks |
|---|---|---|
A large branch network. | High monthly fee if you can’t manage to waive it. | |
Perks for international travel. | Requires a linked brokerage account (though it’s free and you don’t have to use it if you don’t want to). | |
Cash back and interest. | High minimum balance of $2,500 required to be eligible for interest. | |
One highly-rated place for all your banking needs. | It doesn’t have a sign-up bonus like close competitors Capital One and SoFi. | |
Top yields on connected savings. | You have to open the checking account in a branch or over the phone. | |
A highly-rated online credit union. | $25 minimum opening deposit and a low APY. |
What should I look for in a checking account?
Look for a few standard things that a good checking account should have:
No monthly fees
Customer service that’s convenient for your lifestyle
No or low overdraft fees (and overdraft buffers)
A large, free ATM network or ATM fee reimbursements
Other things are nice-to-have, depending on what you need on a daily/monthly basis:
The grocery store my family uses doesn’t allow credit cards (that’s why the groceries are cheaper!) but it also means I can’t earn credit card rewards on some of our largest expenses. This prompted me to look into cash back checking accounts.
I weighed these accounts against interest-bearing checking accounts and asked: Is there an annual limit to the cash back? Would I max it out with our normal spending? Is that max more than I would earn in interest at one of the high-yield checking accounts I was considering?
After answering all those questions, an interest-bearing account was still a better deal for me than any cash back account, based on how much we spend per month and the cushion I like to leave in checking.
But my perfect checking account may not be yours. Find an account that fits your spending patterns; don't fit your spending patterns to match the account or its perks.
What do Fed rate changes mean for checking accounts?
Generally speaking, not really. When the Fed raises or lowers its rate, banks and credit unions will raise or lower the interest rates on their deposit accounts in tandem, but that’s more true for savings accounts than checking. Interest rates for checking tend to remain fairly consistent even when the Fed changes its rate.

Methodology: How we rate banks and credit unions
Banking writers and editors use an objective methodology to rate banks, credit unions, and other providers, and to recommend the best products.
100+
Financial institutions reviewed
100+
Financial institutions reviewed
We took a close look at around 100 financial institutions and financial service providers, including the largest U.S. banks based on assets, internet search traffic and other factors; the nation’s largest credit unions, based on assets and membership; and other notable players in the industry. We rated them on criteria including annual percentage yields, minimum balances, fees, digital experience and more.
30+
Categories assessed
30+
Categories assessed
Each provider is evaluated across five weighted categories and 30 subcategories, including checking and savings accounts, certificates of deposit, customer experience, and overdraft services. For banks or credit unions without one or more types of accounts, the overall rating is modified to include only applicable categories. Institutions are not penalized if they don't offer every type of account.
60+
Data points analyzed
60+
Data points analyzed
We considered more than 60 data points for each provider. Depending on the category, these included account fees and rates (such as annual percentage yields), ATM and branch access, account features, account bonuses, customer service access and user-facing technology, such as innovative tools and mobile apps. We gathered this information for each financial institution from its website, a media representative or both.
Checking account star rating categories
The best checking accounts generally have no monthly fees, free access to a network of more than 10,000 ATMs, no or low minimum opening deposits, low-cost overdraft programs, fast money transfer options, and some additional benefit such as the ability to earn interest or cash back. Checking accounts with a sign-up bonus may get extra marks.
