The Barclays Arrival® Premier World Elite Mastercard® is taking a permanent vacation from new applications. As of Oct. 5, 2018, the card will no longer be offered — after a life of six months.
Launched in April, the travel card took a long-term approach to rewarding loyalty. It had an annual fee of $150 (waived first year). But instead of offering an upfront, eye-catching introductory bonus, it offered the potential to earn 75,000 miles, worth $750, at the end of each card membership year.
The card also offered travel perks, including Global Entry application reimbursement, airport lounge access and multiple travel transfer partners.
Over the past few months, the card was in a test phase that showed a less-than-ideal demand for this type of card, according to Rachana Bhatt, head of branded cards at Barclays U.S. consumer bank.
“We’re focusing our energy towards our winning card in the travel market, Arrival Plus,” said Bhatt via email. “It’s been in the market since 2012 and done very well. It’s won numerous awards and been a top travel card because it meets everyday travelers’ needs.”
The Barclaycard Arrival Plus® World Elite Mastercard® doesn’t offer the large annual loyalty bonus or the travel perks that the Barclays Arrival® Premier World Elite Mastercard® did, but it offers the same redemption flexibility and double miles on spending. It has an annual fee of $89 (waived first year), and an upfront sign-up bonus: Enjoy 60,000 bonus miles after spending $5,000 on purchases in the first 90 days. On top of that, it offers a redemption bonus: When you redeem miles, you get 5% of those miles back toward your next redemption.
Current Barclays Arrival® Premier World Elite Mastercard® cardholders can continue using their card as normal; the card’s features and benefits will remain the same. They will still earn 2 miles on every purchase and have the chance to earn the hefty anniversary bonus. Cardholders will also continue having access to over 850 airport lounges and a statement credit for the Global Entry program.
