Discover cardholders will soon be able to add their cards to Apple Pay, and the credit card issuer is offering a 10% cash-back bonus to get them to do so.
Discover announced in a news release that cardholders can link their Discover cards to Apple Pay starting Sept. 16, 2015 and will get a 10% cash-back bonus through the end of 2015 on all in-store purchases made through the digital wallet, up to $10,000 in purchases. The bonuses apply to new and existing customers.
Get up to 20% back in rewards
The Nerds have confirmed with Discover that the Double Cash Back promotion applies to the Apple Pay bonus. This means new cardholders who applied for an eligible card can effectively get 20% back when using Apple Pay, with the Double Cash Back bonus coming at the end of your first anniversary as a cardholder.
Cards eligible for the Double Cash Back promotion include:
- The Discover it® Cash Back
- The Discover it® Balance Transfer (Note: there’s more than one version of the card)
- The Discover it® chrome
- The Discover it® Student Cash Back
- The Discover it® Student chrome
Those with the Discover it® Miles will earn an extra 10 miles per dollar on up to $10,000 of in-store purchases with the Apple Pay bonus. Also keep in mind that the Discover it® Miles always doubles the miles you earn in your first year; it’s not a limited-time offer.
If you have a Discover credit card, add your card to Apple Pay on Sept. 16 through the Discover mobile app on your iPhone 6 or 6 Plus. To maximize your rewards, review which retailers accept Apple Pay, and use the digital wallet as often as is reasonable given your budget. Remember, the bonus applies only to in-store purchases.
If you do not yet have a Discover credit card, consider applying for one that is included in the Double Cash Back promotion. The Nerds specifically recommend the Discover it® Cash Back because it offers 5% cash back on rotating categories every quarter and the Discover it® Miles because it doubles your miles your first year and has a $0 annual fee, a rarity for a travel card of this caliber.
As always, the Nerds recommend that you avoid overspending simply to take advantage of bonus rewards.
