Sanctuary Beach Resort: An Underrated Coastal Splurge

This secluded California resort is pricey, but the cost can be offset with certain card perks.

SOME CARD INFO MAY BE OUTDATED

California’s central coast is known for its dramatic ocean views, but some stretches remain surprisingly quiet — including Marina, home to Sanctuary Beach Resort. With private beachside patios and terraces, fine dining, and wellness classes, Sanctuary Beach Resort offers a stay that feels both luxurious and cozy.
The hotel is bookable through American Express' travel portal, where it’s part of The Hotel Collection, a curated selection of hotels eligible for additional benefits. On a recent trip, I spent two nights at this resort with a friend, who used the hotel credit on her American Express Platinum Card® to book it. Terms apply.
Room rates start at around $350 after taxes and fees and can top $900 per night during peak season (typically, in fall and summer, or on holiday weekends). For American Express Platinum Card® holders, eligible credits can help offset those costs.

Here’s my review after a two-night stay in February 2026, the hotel’s low season.

The rooms

Sanctuary offers 60 rooms and suites, all with private patios or terraces.

I stayed in an Ocean View Deluxe guestroom. It featured luxurious finishes and Grown Alchemist bath products. There was also a small kitchenette. An in-room fireplace kept things cozy in the chilly weather.

Splurging for an ocean view was worth it in my view. The gray whale migration runs through Monterey Bay from December through April, and other whales migrate year-round. Rooms are stocked with binoculars so you can scan the ocean for whales surfacing close to shore from your patio.

What’s included

What sets Sanctuary apart is how much is built into the stay, including complimentary bicycles, nightly fire pits, plus fruit and beverages in the lobby.

Wellness classes, like yoga and Pilates, are also included.

Dining and add-ons

The restaurant, Salt Wood Kitchen & Oysterette, has a live-fire open kitchen plus a sprawling patio. There’s live music on some nights, and the food highlights local ingredients, including fish caught right off the property, according to the chef, and vegetables from the nearby Salinas Valley. Food was on the pricier end (entrees ranged from about $30 to $60) but felt worth it given the ambiance, service and quality of the ingredients.

Highlights included a hamachi marinated crudo (a type of sashimi) with just enough sauce to keep it light and sweet.

The swordfish was light and flaky, served with olives and artichokes.
The pricier — but perhaps more memorable — dining option is called the BONDFire Experience. At $250 for two people, you get a private beach campfire at sunset.

You choose between s'mores or a fondue spread with bread and vegetables, plus local wines, all set up picnic-style. The $250 price also includes personal staff to bring you anything you need, like drinks and blankets.

It’s pricey but romantic, and could be worth it for a special occasion. It might also be worth it on peak weekend evenings, when securing a fire pit would otherwise require getting there early.

When to go

One thing I wouldn't splurge on in this case: booking during peak season. Temperatures in Marina are remarkably consistent year-round. Daily highs rarely exceed 70 degrees Fahrenheit and lows generally don’t dip under 40, no matter the month.
Because of that, I prefer to visit in winter outside of the holidays, when rates are lower. Going in the summer would be much more expensive, and maybe only slightly warmer.

How to book

Because this property is part of The Hotel Collection from AmEx, you can get certain benefits when booking through AmEx's travel portal with eligible cards.
American Express Platinum Card®
NerdWallet rating
The American Express Platinum Card® offers up to $600 in statement credits per calendar year on eligible bookings through either The Hotel Collection or a similar program called Fine Hotels and Resorts. (The credits are awarded as $300 every six months.) Terms apply.
Card members who book a two-night or longer stay through THC are eligible for the statement credit, plus goodies including space-available early check-in and late check-out, space available room upgrades upon arrival, and a $100 credit toward eligible charges (see rates and fees).
Before booking, compare direct rates with AmEx's THC rates. A 2026 NerdWallet study of hotel prices found that booking through THC cost $30 more, on average, than booking direct for a two-night stay. The benefits can more than make up for the difference — but if you don't plan to use the $100 credit, booking direct could be a better option.

A cozy getaway

Sanctuary Beach Resort has luxurious touches, but it was also cozy and comfortable — and that’s what I liked most about it. Its wellness amenities, remarkable setting, plus tasty food and beverage, justify a splurge stay in my opinion. And if you visit, plan to spend at least one morning watching for whales from your terrace.
