About Assurant renters insurance

Assurant renters insurance earned 3.5 stars out of 5 in our analysis. Assurant's policies include coverage that other insurance companies charge extra for (or don’t offer at all). Having coverage for bedbug or mold damage can add value to your premium.

But there are drawbacks. First, the company draws a very high rate of consumer complaints. Great coverage may not matter if your claim experience is frustrating.

Second, Assurant doesn’t have a mobile app. Renters who like the convenience of managing their policy on their phones will have to use the insurer’s website instead.

Best for: Renters who want to buy and customize their coverage quickly online. Assurant may also be a good choice for people with a checkered credit history. While other insurers charge higher rates to renters with poor credit, Assurant doesn’t check your credit at all.

Not ideal for: Those who want a company known for strong customer service.

What Assurant renters insurance covers

Assurant renters insurance covers your stuff for fire, theft and other scenarios. It also comes with personal liability coverage in case your dog bites someone or a guest gets hurt in your home. These types of coverage are standard parts of a renters insurance policy. (Learn more about what renters insurance covers.)

But Assurant goes beyond the basics with several types of coverage most insurers don’t include:

Replacement cost coverage for personal belongings. If you have to file a claim, Assurant will pay enough money to buy brand-new items. Some companies offer actual cash value coverage, which pays less for items that have lost value over time.

Mold coverage. Assurant covers liability claims and damaged belongings due to mold.

Coverage for your roommate. You can add your roommate to your policy at no extra cost. Just be sure you’ve got enough coverage for everyone’s stuff.

Bedbug coverage. Although most renters insurance doesn’t cover bedbugs, Assurant will pay for extermination and other costs. in some states

Spoiled food coverage. Depending on where you live, you may also have coverage for spoiled food if your power goes out.

Additional living expenses after a flood. If you have to move out of your home due to flood damage, Assurant may help you pay for somewhere else to live.

Take note

Assurant’s policy doesn't cover flood damage to your stuff. For that, you’ll need to buy separate flood insurance for renters.

Optional Assurant renters insurance coverage

You can add optional coverage to your policy for the following scenarios:

Liability-only coverage

Looking for a cheaper renters insurance policy? If you live in one of Assurant’s partner properties, you can choose the company’s Liability Only policy. This no-frills option won't cover your personal belongings, but it will cover damage that you cause by accident, either to your own unit or a neighbor’s.

Say you unintentionally start a kitchen fire. The policy might pay to replace your apartment’s charred walls and cabinets, but not your oven mitts.

It also covers personal liability expenses if your dog bites a guest.

What’s not covered

Assurant renters insurance won’t cover you if you rent out your space on sites like Airbnb. (You may need business insurance for that.)

It also won’t cover anything other than the specific scenarios listed in your policy. So if you haven’t bought the optional earthquake coverage, for example, it won’t pay for earthquake damage.

Keep in mind that renters insurance never covers regular wear and tear or deliberate damage on your part.

Where Assurant renters insurance is available

Assurant renters insurance is available in all 50 states plus Washington, D.C.

Availability may change at any time. Coverage may not be available to all renters in a given state.

Discounts

You can save on fees by paying your renters insurance premium all at once, upfront, rather than on a monthly or quarterly basis.

You may also be eligible for a credit if you buy an Assurant policy while living in a community that requires you to have renters insurance.

Consumer satisfaction

One strong sign of consumer satisfaction is how many people complain about their insurance company to state agencies. Assurant scores poorly on this measure, drawing a very high proportion of home insurance complaints compared to other U.S. insurers.

We determined our complaint scores by analyzing three years' worth of data from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. When comparing insurers, we accounted for company size and total premiums.

How we evaluate renters insurance companies

Face, Head, Person

👋 I’m Sarah Schlichter, a senior writer and content strategist covering renters insurance. I built NerdWallet’s renters insurance rubric and did the research for this page to evaluate companies. I gathered and analyzed data across four major categories:

  • Companies get better scores when they have consumer-friendly features and low rates of complaints.

    Consumer complaints

We analyze the number of consumer complaints reported to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. The higher the rate of complaints, the lower a company's score.

    Digital tools

We look at how easy it is to interact with insurers by evaluating their digital tools, website and customer support methods. The best insurers have user-friendly features like online quotes and live chat.

  • Companies earn points based on how generous and customizable their policies are.

    Coverage for personal property

Insurers that cover your belongings on a replacement cost basis by default get higher scores. Those with less generous actual cash value coverage score lower.

    Optional coverage

For this category, we look at whether each company offers some of the most useful add-ons, such as extra coverage for valuables.

  • The more affordable a company's policies are, the better its score.

We evaluate the discounts a company offers and, when available, its median rates.

  • Companies score well when they have a healthy balance sheet.

We evaluate an insurer’s ability to pay future claims by using assessments from independent agencies such as AM Best and Demotech. The top renters insurance companies have financial strength ratings of A, A+ or A++.

Renters insurance star ratings methodology

NerdWallet’s renters insurance ratings reward companies for customer-first features and practices. Ratings are based on weighted averages of scores in several categories, including affordability, financial strength, consumer experience and coverage quality. These ratings are a guide, but we encourage you to shop around and compare several insurance quotes to find the best rate for you. NerdWallet does not receive compensation for any reviews. Read our full renters insurance rating methodology.

Insurer complaints methodology

NerdWallet examined complaints received by state insurance regulators and reported to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners from 2023 through 2025. To assess how insurers compare to one another, the NAIC calculates a complaint index each year for each subsidiary, measuring its share of total complaints relative to its size, or share of total premiums in the industry. To evaluate a company’s complaint history, NerdWallet calculated a similar index for each insurer, weighted by market shares of each subsidiary, over the three-year period. NerdWallet conducts its data analysis and reaches conclusions independently and without the endorsement of the NAIC. Ratios are determined separately for auto, home (including renters and condo) and life insurance.
