Hyatt: How to Use Free Night Awards
Redeeming awards through the Hyatt site is relatively simple. Earning them can be, too, with the right card.

Many or all of the products on this page are from partners who compensate us when you click to or take an action on their website, but this does not influence our evaluations or ratings. Our opinions are our own.
One of the most valuable perks in Hyatt’s loyalty program is the free night award. Depending on how you earn it, a single free night can cover the full cost of a hotel stay that might otherwise cost hundreds of dollars.
Hyatt free night awards can come from several sources, including the World of Hyatt Credit Card, elite status milestones and brand-based rewards. Knowing how each type works, and where you can use it, can make a big difference in how much value you get.
Here’s how Hyatt free night awards work, how to find and use them, and how to get the most value out of each one.

What types of Hyatt free night awards are available?
Hyatt free night awards can be especially valuable because they cover the cost of a qualifying night, regardless of the hotel’s cash price, as long as it falls within the allowed category range.
You can earn Hyatt free night awards in three main ways.
World of Hyatt Credit Card
The World of Hyatt Credit Card offers one of the easiest ways to earn Hyatt free night awards because of its welcome offer and its ongoing annual benefits.
The card offers a big sign-up bonus: Earn up to 60,000 Bonus Points. Earn 30,000 Bonus Points after you spend $3,000 on purchases in your first 3 months from account opening. Plus, up to 30,000 more Bonus Points by earning 2 Bonus Points total per $1 spent in the first 6 months from account opening on purchases that normally earn 1 Bonus Point, on up to $15,000 spent.
Beyond the welcome offer, cardholders receive a Category 1-4 free night certificate each year after their cardmember anniversary. A second Category 1-4 award can be earned after spending $15,000 on the card in a calendar year.

Milestone Rewards
Hyatt’s Milestone Rewards program offers incentives for frequent guests based on the number of qualifying nights stayed or points earned. Milestone Rewards start at 20 nights and continue every 10 nights, up to 150 nights. All Milestone Rewards expire 180 days from the date of issuance.
Free night awards are available at several Milestone levels:
- At 30 nights or 50,000 base points, members earn a Category 1-4 free night award.
- At 60 nights or 100,000 base points, members receive a free night award valid at a Category 1-7 hotel or a Category A-D all-inclusive resort.
- At 100 nights, members earn another free night award valid at a Category 1-7 hotel or a Category A-D all-inclusive resort.
- At 150 nights, members get a free night valid at any participating Category 1-8 hotel, Category A-F all-inclusive resort or Miraval property.
In addition to the above, at 100, 110, 120, 130, 140 and 150 nights, members can select a Miraval extra night award as one of their Milestone options. These higher thresholds are based solely on nights stayed, not base points.
Brand Explorer award
Hyatt’s Brand Explorer program rewards members for exploring Hyatt’s portfolio of more than 30 hotel brands. After completing qualifying stays at five different Hyatt brands, you’ll earn a Category 1-4 free night award.
Qualifying stays include paid rates, points bookings and stays booked with free night awards. Once earned, the award is valid for one year and can be redeemed at participating Category 1-4 hotels and resorts.
Over the lifetime of your membership, you can earn up to seven Brand Explorer free night awards, with a new award issued for every additional five new brands you stay at. To check your progress, log into your World of Hyatt account, go to “My Account” and select “Brand Explorer.”

Where to find your Hyatt free night award
Once you've earned a Hyatt free night award, you can find it in your World of Hyatt account online or in the mobile app.
On Hyatt.com, log into your account, click your name in the upper right corner and select "My Awards."

After clicking on "My Awards," you'll find a summary showing your free night certificates, upgrades and Brand Explorer awards.

Click the blue plus sign in the free nights section to view more details. You'll see a list of your active free night certificates, along with important information such as the eligible hotel categories and expiration dates.

This is also where you can check whether a free night certificate has already been used or is still available to redeem.
How to use a Hyatt free night award
After locating the free night certificate you want to use, click the blue "Explore Hotels" button.
This opens Hyatt’s destination map, which highlights eligible hotels and resorts worldwide. You can zoom in on a specific area or switch to a list view to search by destination. If you’re using a Category 1-4 free night certificate, filter your search to categories 1 through 4 to avoid viewing properties that aren’t eligible.
You can further narrow your results by brand, amenities or location. Once you find a property you’re interested in, click “Select” to view availability.
Enter your desired travel dates and choose "Book Now."

If a standard room is available for your dates, you’ll see “Free Night” listed next to the room type. You can also view the points rates for the same room. Once you are ready to book, click “Select” to proceed.

Once you've selected a room, you'll need to verify your personal information and payment information to complete the booking.

Other ways to get free nights at Hyatt
In addition to free night awards, Hyatt offers flexible booking options that let you use points, cash or a combination of both to cover your stay.
Redeeming points for a Hyatt free night
World of Hyatt members can redeem points for free nights. Hyatt uses an award chart with off-peak, standard and peak pricing, and the number of points required depends on the hotel category and room type.
Hyatt points are widely considered to be among the most valuable hotel loyalty points due in part to predictable award pricing and strong redemption rates. Unlike free night certificates, which are limited to certain categories and room types, points can be used at properties across all categories and for a wider range of room types, including club rooms and suites. Hyatt also offers Cash + Points rates at select hotels.
For a full breakdown of Hyatt’s award chart and how to redeem points for free nights for maximum value, check out our guide to using World of Hyatt points.
Hyatt Pay My Way
Hyatt’s Pay My Way feature lets you mix and match payment methods within a single reservation. For each night of your stay, you can choose to pay with cash, points, Points + Cash or free night awards, and Hyatt shows the cost of each option side by side.
In the first example below, the two-night stay is priced entirely in cash, with a total cost of $238.
In the second example below, the reservation uses different payment methods for each night. One night is booked using points (5,000), while the other is booked using Points + Cash (2,500 points + $61). This shows how Pay My Way allows you to customize how each night is paid for.
Before redeeming points, it's worth doing a quick value check to make sure you’re getting a good use out of them. Since Hyatt points are worth 1.8 cents each, aim for redemptions that meet or exceed that value.
Keep in mind that when any portion of a stay is paid in cash, taxes and fees will apply to that part of the reservation.
How to find eligible Hyatt hotels for free night awards
Hyatt’s destination map includes more than 1,500 properties where you can redeem points or certificates. For Category 1-4 certificates, there are more than 1,100 eligible hotels worldwide.
Use the map's filters to further narrow the search results to find a property that offers what you're looking for. The filter includes searches for common hotel amenities like:
- Free breakfast.
- Pet-friendly.
- Pool.
- Ski.
You also can filter by brand. Families may gravitate toward Hyatt Select, Sunscape Resorts & Spas or Hyatt Regency, while travelers planning a romantic or luxury stay may focus on brands such as Park Hyatt, Alila, Secrets Resorts & Spas, Hyatt Zilara or Dreams Resorts & Spas.
How to get maximum value from Hyatt free night awards
Most Hyatt free night awards are limited to Category 1-4 properties, though some Milestone Awards provide certificates up to Category 7 and 8. To get the most value from your awards, keep these tips in mind:
- Target higher-category properties. Hotels in higher categories generally have higher cash rates, which can make certificates more valuable. If you have a Category 1-4 certificate, you’ll get more bang for your buck redeeming at a Category 4 hotel rather than a Category 1 hotel.
- Compare cash versus points. A higher category doesn’t always guarantee better value. Before booking, compare the cash price against the points required. NerdWallet values Hyatt points at 1.8 cents each, so if a redemption doesn’t meet or exceed that value, paying cash could make more sense.
- Factor in parking costs (Globalists only). Many Hyatt properties charge for parking, but Globalist members receive free parking on award stays at participating hotels. Saving on parking can significantly increase the overall value of a free night. To maximize your free night certificates, save them for stays where you'll need to park a vehicle.
- Don't forget about waived resort fees. Hyatt is one of the hotel brands that waive resort fees on award stays for all members. On paid stays, resort fees are waived only for Globalist members.
- Look beyond major U.S. markets. Some international Hyatt properties offer stronger value relative to their cash prices and award categories, which can make free night certificates stretch further than in high-demand U.S. cities.
Caution when redeeming Hyatt free night awards
Most free night certificates are eligible for stays at Category 1-4 hotels or resorts, but some go up to Category 8. When booking an award stay, Hyatt’s system typically applies the free night award that expires soonest. This means it’s possible to accidentally use a higher-value certificate on a lower-category stay.
Before confirming your reservation, double-check which certificate is being applied. If the wrong one was used, contact Hyatt customer service or your Globalist concierge to request a swap.
The bottom line
Hyatt free night certificates can deliver outsized value when used strategically. Cardholders can earn up to two free nights each year from the World of Hyatt Credit Card, with additional opportunities available through elite status and Brand Explorer awards. With some strategic planning, these certificates can offset expensive hotel stays and stretch your travel budget significantly.
