Airport security can be the least pleasant and most stressful aspect of air travel, which is why even occasional travelers should consider enrolling in the TSA PreCheck or Global Entry trusted traveler programs. These programs let you use expedited security lanes that can significantly reduce your wait time. But they aren't free. It costs up to $85 to apply for TSA PreCheck or $120 for Global Entry. If you have the right credit card, however, you can get the application fee reimbursed.

What to look for in a credit card for TSA PreCheck or Global Entry

Dozens of credit cards reimburse you for the application fee for TSA PreCheck or Global Entry, and almost all of them charge an annual fee. (Almost all. There are a few exceptions.) Since the reimbursement for these so-called trusted traveler programs is typically available only once every four years, this benefit by itself won't be enough to offset your costs of carrying a card with a fee of $95 or more. Your decision, then, will probably hinge on a card's benefits besides the reimbursement.

When evaluating a card, check whether the rewards structure aligns with your spending and suits your tolerance for complexity. If you’re forgetful or prefer simplicity, you’ll have a hard time with a card that has a lengthy list of rewards categories with spending caps. Decide whether the non-rewards perks are things you'll actually be able to use without having to spend money you otherwise wouldn't have spent. Take the sign-up bonus and other incentives into account. Make sure that the statement credit available on a card applies to the program you're actually applying for. (With most cards, both TSA PreCheck and Global Entry are eligible for the credit, but only a relative handful of cards also cover NEXUS.) And be aware that some cards don't cover the full cost of the more expensive Global Entry.

Ultimately, the value of a credit for TSA PreCheck or Global Entry depends on how much use the cardholder has for the programs themselves. Frequent travelers who are always going through airport security wouldn't dream of getting in the "regular" line when there was a PreCheck line available. Occasional travelers may or may not consider the potential for security delays and hassles to be worth jumping through the hoops involved in getting approved.

How NerdWallet chose these cards for TSA PreCheck or Global Entry

The higher the annual fee on a travel credit card, the more likely its benefits will include reimbursement for trusted traveler programs. If you're paying upwards of $300 a year for a travel card, you should expect this benefit. But there are a handful of options available with a $0 annual fee, as well as several cards in the $95 to $100 range. For this page, we chose cards whose benefits beyond the reimbursement will appeal to broad segments of consumers. Below our picks for the best cards in the category, you'll find a more comprehensive list of popular cards offering the benefit. Learn more about our picks or see more about our methodology.

Expert tip: Look beyond the airport security credit

Melissa Lambarena, senior credit cards writer: "Cards that offer this benefit commonly have an annual fee. A card’s perks and rewards must match your style of travel to easily make up that annual cost. If a card offers hotel credits and you typically stay at vacation rentals, you likely won’t get the most value from it. Same applies if a card offers free checked bags and you tend to travel light. Look for the card that offers the most value based on how you already travel. For international travel, also consider whether a card belongs to a widely accepted network like Visa or Mastercard and saves money by skipping foreign transaction fees."

    NerdWallet's take

The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card is an excellent travel companion if you prefer simple rewards and flexible redemptions. The card also offers a statement credit of up to $120 for TSA PreCheck or Global Entry once every four years.

    Pros
    • The $95 annual fee is low for a card that offers TSA/Global Entry reimbursement.

    • Rewards: 2 miles per $1 on all purchases, which rises to 5 miles per $1 on hotels and car rentals booked through Capital One Travel.

    • A welcome offer: Earn a one-time bonus of 75,000 miles once you spend $4,000 on purchases within 3 months from account opening, equal to $750 in travel.

    • Miles are worth one cent apiece when redeemed toward travel expenses.

    • Multiple transfer partners.

    • No foreign transaction fees.

    Cons
    • It lacks the lengthy list of perks offered by higher-priced cards that also reimburse PreCheck and Global Entry.

    • As a general-purpose travel credit card, it doesn’t offer airline-specific benefits like free checked bags.

    NerdWallet's take

The United℠ Explorer Card is ideal when your go-to airline is United. It offers a statement credit of up to $120 every four years for the application fee for Global Entry, TSA PreCheck or NEXUS. (Don't fly United? Here are cards from American and Delta.)

    Pros
    • Rewards: 3 miles per $1 spent with United, 2 miles per $1 at restaurants and direct-booked hotel stays, and 1 mile per $1 on other spending.

    • A welcome offer: Earn 50,000 bonus miles after you spend $3,000 on purchases in the first 3 months your account is open.

    • First checked bag is free for you and a companion.

    • Two one-time-use passes to United Club airport lounges each year.

    • Priority boarding.

    • No foreign transaction fees.

    Cons
    • It has an annual fee: $0 intro for the first year, then $150. That’s on par with similar airline cards, but if you only care about the TSA PreCheck/Global Entry benefit, cheaper options exist.

    • Redemptions are limited mostly to travel-related options, with a few exceptions.

    • While the perks are plenty, there are a lot of restrictions and terms to keep track of to ensure you’re getting the most value from the card.

    NerdWallet's take

The Chase Sapphire Reserve® charges a steep $795 annual fee, but it has the perks to make up for it. Among them, you’ll receive a reimbursement of up to $120 every four years for a Global Entry, Nexus or TSA PreCheck application fee.

    Pros
    • Rewards: 8 points per dollar on all travel booked through Chase, 4 points per dollar on flights booked directly with airlines, 4 points per dollar on hotel stays booked directly and 1 point per dollar on all other travel. Plus, 3 points per dollar on dining and 1 point per dollar on all other purchases.

    • A welcome offer: Earn 100,000 bonus points after you spend $6,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening.

    • Points are worth more when redeemed for travel booked through Chase.

    • Up to $300 a year in statement credit automatically applied to travel purchases.

    • Complimentary Priority Pass Select airport lounge membership.

    • Multiple hotel and airline transfer partners.

    • No foreign transaction fees.

    Cons
    • A $795 annual fee. Perks and rewards can help offset it, but that’s still expensive.

    • Redemptions are flexible, but to get the highest point values, you’ll have to be OK booking travel through Chase or transferring points to partners.

    • As a general-purpose travel credit card, it doesn’t offer airline-specific benefits like free checked bags.

    • Airport lounge access is limited to airports that have a Chase Sapphire Lounge or Priority Pass lounge.

    • A $99 annual fee, which is low for a card that offers this many valuable perks.

    • Rewards: Up to 26 points per $1 spent with IHG brands (counting points earned via both the card and the IHG loyalty program); 5 points per $1 on gas stations, travel and restaurants; and 3 points per $1 elsewhere.

    • A welcome offer: Earn 140,000 Bonus Points after spending $3,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening.

    Cons
    • Points are relatively low, based on NerdWallet valuations — though you do get a lot of them. They’ll be most valuable when redeemed for hotel stays within the IHG portfolio.

    • There’s a lot to keep track of, including a complex rewards structure and some perks that require a large amount of spending.

    NerdWallet's take

The Bank of America® Premium Rewards® credit card pays a solid rate on all spending, gives you the same redemption value whether you use your points for travel or to get cash back, and offers potentially lucrative rewards bonuses if you're a loyal banking customer. Benefits include a statement credit of up to $100 every four years for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck.

    Pros
    • The $95 annual fee is on the low end for cards with a TSA PreCheck/GLobal Entry credit.

    • Rewards: 2 points per dollar spent on travel, and 1.5 points per dollar elsewhere.

    • Bank of America® has one of the most generous definitions of "travel" of any issuer, which means more spending eligible for 2X points, and the 1.5X rate is 50% better than the 1X that other cards give you on "other" spending.

    • Strong bonus offer: Get 60,000 online bonus points - a $600 value - after you make at least $4,000 in purchases in the first 90 days of account opening.

    • Up to $100 in statement credit each year to cover incidental airline fees.

    • Cardholders balances in Bank of America® and Merrill accounts can earn 10% to 75% more rewards.

    Cons
    • The credit amount is enough to cover TSA PreCheck but will leave you $20 short for Global Entry.

    • Unlike with other cards with annual fees in the same range, you don't have the option to transfer your points to airline or hotel programs to potentially get greater value.

    NerdWallet's take

The $895 annual fee on the American Express Platinum Card® is high, no question. But among premium travel cards, it also boasts one of the longest lists of valuable perks you’ll find. Included is a statement credit reimbursement of $85 for TSA PreCheck once every 4.5 years or $120 for Global Entry once every four years. Terms apply. If you can use most of the card’s incentives, it can make traveling more comfortable.

    Pros
    • Rewards: 5 Membership Rewards points per $1 spent on flights booked directly with airlines or through American Express, on up to $500,000 spent per year; 5 points per $1 on prepaid hotels booked through American Express; and 1 point per $1 on all other purchases.

    • A welcome offer: You may be eligible for as high as 175,000 Membership Rewards® Points after spending $12,000 in eligible purchases on your new Card in your first 6 months of Membership. Welcome offers vary and you may not be eligible for an offer. Terms apply.

    • Membership Rewards points are generally worth about 0.5 cent to 1 cent each, depending on how you redeem them.

    • Perks: Extensive airport lounge access, elite status in hotel programs, and hundreds of dollars a year in available credits for travel, shopping and entertainment. Enrollment is required. Those credits include up to $200 for incidental fees on one airline (including checked bags), up to $200 for U.S. Uber Eats orders and Uber rides, and up to $300 for select digital entertainment. Enrollment is required. (See our review for a full rundown.)

    • Multiple hotel and airline transfer partners.

    • No foreign transaction fees.

    • Terms apply.

    Cons
    • The whopping $895 annual fee can be worth paying, but it’s still a big expense.

    • The perks on this card are oddly specific and come with restrictions, so you might not get as much value unless you can keep track of them or live in a city where they’re available.

    • Redemptions are flexible, but the most ideal value will come from booking through AmEx’s travel portal or transferring points to partners.

    • Terms apply.

    NerdWallet's take

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is a fairly recent addition to this list. For years, the lack of a PreCheck/Global Entry benefit was one of the primary drawbacks of this card. That changed with a mid-2026 update that added a credit of up to $120, available every once every four years. With that, this perennial favorite card closed a significant gap between itself and its rivals.

    Pros
    • The $95 annual fee is a relative bargain for the level of benefits you get.

    • Rewards: 5X points on travel booked through Chase and 2X on other travel; 3X on dining and online grocery delivery (not including Target, Walmart and wholesale clubs); 3X on streaming services; 3X on gas and EV charging; 3X on vacation homes booked directly with brands like Airbnb and VRBO; and 1X on other purchases.

    • Bonus offer: Earn 75,000 bonus points after you spend $5,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening.

    • Points can be worth more when you redeem them for travel booked through Chase.

    • Get up to $100 in statement credit each account anniversary year for hotel stays booked through Chase.

    • Points can also be transferred to multiple airline and hotel programs.

    Cons
    • As a general-purpose card, it doesn't come with the kinds of perks offered by branded airline cards.

    • Although this might be a good problem to have, the card's expanding grab bag of bonus categories can be hard to keep track of.

More about our picks: Best credit cards for TSA PreCheck and Global Entry

As discussed above, the deciding factor when choosing one of these cards isn't going to be the TSA PreCheck/Global Entry benefit in itself. It's everything else the card delivers in addition to that benefit — the rewards, the ongoing perks, the sign-up bonus — weighed against the annual fee. Every traveler is going to assess these things in their own way, and every card is going to deliver value in its own way. So no single card is going to be the best option for everyone. But each of the cards on this page is, in our opinion, the best option for a specific kind of consumer. This page is not a ranked list ordered from best to worst; it's a roundup of all the best options.

Below, we dive a little deeper on the cards featured on this page — what makes them stand out and what kind of cardholder would benefit most from them. If you're still unsure about your decision, this additional context may help.

Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card

Our pick for: Simple travel rewards

The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card is hard to beat if you just want a simple, flexible travel card. For a comparatively modest annual fee (see rates and fees), you get a strong rewards rate on all purchases: 2 miles per dollar, rising to 5 miles per dollar for certain bookings through Capital One's travel portal. You also get perks like a credit toward TSA PreCheck or Global Entry. But it's the straightforward redemption process that has made this card so popular — and which has been the cornerstone of this card's marketing for more than a decade. Miles can be redeemed for 1 cent apiece for credit on your statement against travel purchases, allowing you to book travel however you want and then redeem your miles to pay for it, without the restrictions of airline or hotel loyalty programs. (Other issuers have copied this model, but give Capital One credit for popularizing it.) You can also use miles to book travel directly for travel through Capital One (also at 1 cent per mile) or transfer them to one of the issuer's partners. Be advised, however, that the only domestic airline among those partners is JetBlue, as the biggest U.S. airlines have been locked up by other card issuers. And if you want to use your miles for credit against non-travel expenses (as cash back, essentially), they're worth only half as much. Read our review of the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card.

» For even more benefits with similar flexibility: Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card

Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card

Our pick for: Flexibility and value

While premium travel credit cards race toward annual fees of $1,000, the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card remains an outstanding choice if you’re looking for solid, flexible benefits at a reasonable cost. Although it lacks some of the perks you’d enjoy with higher-end cards, such as airport lounge access, you still get a lot for the money. So much value, in fact, that it has been the NerdWallet Best-Of Award winner for best all-purpose travel card from 2023 to 2026. There’s a generous sign-up bonus, plus elevated rewards for travel (especially travel booked through Chase), dining, streaming services, online grocery purchases, vacation rentals, gas and electric vehicle charging. The card also offers an annual credit toward hotels booked through Chase, as well as a credit for TSA PreCheck or Global Entry, plus primary rental car coverage. Points are potentially worth more when you redeem them for travel booked through Chase, or you can transfer them to about a dozen airline and hotel partners. The partner list is especially strong and includes big brands like United, Southwest, JetBlue, Marriott, Hyatt and IHG. But note that all those redemption options can make this a more complicated card to manage. Read our review of the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card.

» For simpler rewards for a similar price: Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card

Citi Strata Elite℠ Card

Our pick for: Flexibility + easy-to-use credits

The Citi Strata Elite℠ Card may be attractive to anyone committed to Citi's ThankYou® points ecosystem, as it earns outstanding rewards rates on travel booked through the issuer. But it's especially valuable for frequent American Airlines flyers. First, the points you earn can be transferred to American, as well as to other airline and hotel partners. Second, you get four day passes each year for American's airport lounges, the Admirals Club. And there's a $200 "Splurge Credit" each year that you can use at select merchants, including American Airlines. Cardholders also get a $300 statement credit on hotels booked through Citi, a statement credit to cover the cost of TSA PreCheck or Global Entry, and access to Priority Pass lounges. Add up just those benefits, and you've more than made up the $595 annual fee. If you're not flying American, though, it'll take more effort to cover the cost. And the level of effort required is one of the drawbacks of the card. For example, the non-airline "Splurge" merchants might not be of much use to you. And while you can earn 6X points on dining ... that rate is available only on certain days at certain times. That kind of thing. Read our review of the Citi Strata Elite℠ Card.

» For a lower annual fee: Citi Strata Premier® Card.

Chase Sapphire Reserve®

Our pick for: Richer rewards for frequent travelers

For its high annual fee, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® packs a lot of potential value — a big sign-up bonus, elevated rewards on travel and dining purchases, and travel perks such as airport lounge access and a credit toward TSA PreCheck or Global Entry. Points are potentially worth more when you redeem them for travel booked through Chase, or you can transfer them to about a dozen airline and hotel programs, with a strong roster of partners that includes big domestic airlines and hotel credits. The flexible annual travel credit will easily take a big bite out of the annual fee, but chipping away at the rest of the cost involves a laundry list of credits toward purchases with specific merchants. If these were purchases you were going to make anyway, then they elevate the card's utility and value. If not, you may find it difficult to get enough out of the card to justify the big fee. Ultimately, frequent travelers who can use at least some of the credits stand to get the most out of this card. If you don't travel all that much, it will be hard to justify the fee. Read our review of the Chase Sapphire Reserve®.

» For a high-end experience with greater simplicity: Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card

American Express Platinum Card®

Our pick for: Luxury travel perks and credits

The American Express Platinum Card® isn't for everyone. The annual fee is among the highest on any card, and a significant chunk of the card's value lies in an array of travel, lifestyle, entertainment and shopping credits that might appeal to hardcore maximizers but can just look like work to those who are more laid-back. But "not for everyone" doesn't mean "not for anyone." Frequent travelers who enjoy VIP treatment and don't mind putting in some effort can easily make back the $895 annual fee. You can travel in style with extensive lounge access, a yearly airline credit that covers things like checked bag fees and upgraded seats, and credits toward prepaid bookings at select hotels. Plus, the card's statement credits for CLEAR+ and either TSA PreCheck or Global Entry can smooth your way through airport security. On top of its extensive travel benefits, cardholders also get benefits with Resy restaurants, Uber, Equinox, Lululemon, the Oura Ring and more. Note, though, that while the perks are extensive, the rewards are more limited. Some travel earns 5 points per dollar spent, everything else only earns 1 point per dollar. Enrollment required for many benefits; terms apply. Read our review of the American Express Platinum Card®.

» For higher spending rewards and a lower annual fee: American Express® Gold Card.

U.S. Bank Altitude® Connect Visa Signature® Card

Our pick for: No annual fee

The U.S. Bank Altitude® Connect Visa Signature® Card is easily a top contender for best travel rewards card with no annual fee. It’s particularly suited for travelers who want a cheap, uncomplicated yet lucrative option. The card is a rarity because it costs $0 to carry but offers reimbursement for the application fee for TSA PreCheck or Global Entry — a perk that’s typically offered only on travel cards with annual fees of $95 and up. Quadruple points on travel and on purchases at gas stations and EV charging stations make it an even more competitive option. But because there’s a combined quarterly cap for those rewards categories, the card it's not ideal for bigger travel spenders. Additionally, the card doesn’t have travel partners you can transfer your points to, which further differentiates it from annual fee cards (this time, not in a good way). To that end, it’s best suited for casual travelers. Read our review of the U.S. Bank Altitude® Connect Visa Signature® Card.

» For more perks, with a fee: Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card

Bank of America® Premium Rewards® credit card

Our pick for: Cash redemption option (or Bank of America® customers)

The Bank of America® Premium Rewards® credit card is a solid travel card that makes the jump to superior if you are a member of the issuer's wider relationship rewards program, which unlocks higher earning rates. The card earns 2 points per dollar on travel and dining, and its 1.5X rate on all other purchases is 50% higher than what you get for non-bonus spending on most other cards. BofA Rewards members can earn up to 75% rewards accelerator, giving them up to 3.5X on travel and dining and 2.625X on other purchases. If you're not a member of BofA Rewards, however, the math changes. Multiple other cards have a base rewards rate of 2% (or 2X) on all purchases, regardless of category. That extra 0.5X on all non-travel/dining spending could tilt the equation toward a different card. Or it might not. Bank of America® has a broad definition of 2X-eligible “travel” that includes not just flights, hotels and rental cars, but also parking lots and garages, amusement parks, tourist attractions, aquariums, zoos and more. Plus, the $100 annual credit for airline incidentals more than offsets the card’s annual fee, making this a low-cost option for frequent travelers. Read our review of the Bank of America® Premium Rewards® credit card.

» For 2 miles per dollar on most purchases: Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card

United℠ Explorer Card

Our pick for: Airline credit card

United℠ Explorer Card earns bonus rewards not only on spending with United Airlines but also at restaurants and on eligible hotel stays. And the perks are outstanding for a basic airline card — a free checked bag, priority boarding, lounge passes and more. Read our review.

IHG One Rewards Premier Credit Card

Our pick for: Hotel credit card

If you stay at the brands of InterContinental Hotel Group, the IHG One Rewards Premier Credit Card can be well worth its annual fee for the free anniversary night alone, and you’ll enjoy Platinum Elite status as long as you have the card. Read our review.

TSA PreCheck vs. Global Entry

Credit cards that offer a TSA PreCheck or Global Entry benefit will typically reimburse you for the application fee for either program, but not both. Whichever fee hits your card, that's the one that will be reimbursed, and that starts the clock on when you'll next qualify for the benefit.

TSA PreCheck allows you to use expedited security lanes at U.S. airports. Global Entry gives you the same benefits as TSA PreCheck, as well as faster customs screening when you arrive in the U.S. from abroad. Since Global Entry gives you more benefits (and if your credit card is footing the bill either way), it's usually the better bet, especially if you ever travel internationally.

🤓Nerdy Tip

Depending on your preferred location, Global Entry appointments can be hard to secure at times. For a small, one-time fee, a service called Global Entry Spotter can help. The tool scans for open appointment slots in real time and will alert you with a text message once it finds availability at your desired enrollment center.

What are CLEAR and Nexus?

Some credit cards offer benefits for trusted traveler programs besides (or in addition to) TSA PreCheck and Global Entry:

  • A CLEAR+ membership gets you through security faster at more than 40 airports in the United States. It lets you quickly access identification documents and verify your identity by scanning your fingerprints or eyes. This process allows you to skip the TSA ID check and go directly to security. Cost starts at $169 for a standard annual membership.

  • Nexus, a joint program of the U.S. and Canadian governments, allows travelers to go back and forth between the countries more easily. Cost is $50 for five years.

🤓Nerdy Tip

Under a partnership between the TSA and CLEAR, you can apply for TSA PreCheck at one of almost 50 participating CLEAR enrollment locations without an appointment. Submit your application online first, then finish the process at a CLEAR kiosk at a participating airport. CLEAR will submit your TSA PreCheck application on your behalf; expect to hear back in three to five days.

How to apply for TSA PreCheck or Global Entry

For TSA PreCheck

Getting a credit card that reimburses your application fee is the easy first step. Once you have your card, submit your online application for TSA PreCheck. Then, you’ll be directed to schedule an in-person appointment at a TSA Enrollment Center, where you’ll spend about 10 minutes undergoing a background check and fingerprinting. You can expect a decision on your application within about three to five days, though some applications can take up to 60 days. Or, you can apply for TSA PreCheck through CLEAR and skip the interview. Just start your application online and visit a CLEAR airport kiosk to complete the process.

Upon approval, you'll receive a “known traveler” number, which you’ll need to enter when you book a flight. Using your “known traveler” number will likely earn you the TSA PreCheck logo on your boarding pass. And with that, you can enter the expedited TSA PreCheck line.

Note that TSA uses unpredictable security measures, and having TSA PreCheck approval is not a guarantee that you can access the PreCheck line.

“All travelers will be screened, and no individual is guaranteed expedited screening,” according to a statement from the TSA.

For Global Entry

Global Entry includes the perks of TSA PreCheck — plus a bit more. You get an expedited customs line upon landing in the U.S. In most cases, you’ll simply scan your passport or U.S. permanent resident card at a Global Entry kiosk, complete the customs declaration form, scan your fingerprints and move along.

To get started, apply for Global Entry online; you’ll likely receive conditional approval. After that, you’ll need to schedule an interview at a Global Entry Enrollment Center (typically located at a U.S. international airport, though some virtual appointments are available, too).

It can be tough to find available appointments, so be flexible with your schedule — and check back often if there’s no availability.

What else you need to know

How credit cards reimburse the fee for TSA PreCheck or Global Entry

If your card offers a TSA PreCheck or Global Entry benefit, you must pay the application fee with that card. The charge on your card will later be reimbursed as a statement credit. You'll only be reimbursed for the first program fee charged to the card.

If you use a form of payment other than your qualifying credit card, you won’t be reimbursed for the fee.

How often you get the TSA PreCheck/Global Entry credit

Upon approval, membership in these trusted traveler programs lasts for five years and must be renewed (for another fee). The frequency with which credit cards reimburse those fees varies by card. In many cases, cards offer the benefit every four years, giving you plenty of time to renew before your membership expires. Other cards only reimburse the fee every five years. Pay close attention to how your membership expiration date lines up with your card benefits. In some cases, you may need to delay renewal or use a different credit card with these benefits to get your fee renewal reimbursed.

Paying the fee doesn't guarantee approval for TSA PreCheck or Global Entry

Using the benefit on your credit card when you apply for trusted traveler programs just means that the cost of the application fee will be refunded to you on a later statement. It doesn't guarantee that you'll actually be approved for TSA PreCheck or Global Entry. You still have to go through the programs' background and security checks. Like anyone else applying for these programs, you could apply, pay the fee and be rejected.

How we choose the best credit cards

Our team of credit card experts has developed a rigorous methodology to determine how much value a card delivers and how it stacks up against its competitors.

400+

Cards reviewed

NerdWallet’s experts have reviewed more than 400 cards, from the most popular options at the biggest banks to store cards to niche cards from startups and small issuers.

8

Categories scored

Credit cards are so diverse that properly rating them with a single formula is impossible. We’ve built eight rubrics, plus variations, so we can score each card on what matters.

50+

Data points analyzed

Our ratings consider not just a card’s rates, fees, rewards and perks, but also how easy or hard it is to get that card, manage it and enjoy its advertised benefits.

Star rating categories

What you want out of, say, a cash back credit card is fundamentally different from what you’re looking for in a balance transfer card or a card for building credit. That’s why we have different scoring models that put weight on different features.

Cash back cards

Cash back cards

Our formula looks at how much cash back you could expect to earn from typical household spending. We consider rewards rates and categories, bonus offers and the cash value of other benefits, as well as any annual fee. The rating is also influenced by the complexity of the rewards structure.

General travel cards

General travel cards

We consider how many points you could expect to earn from typical household spending, along with per-point values and redemption options. We add in the cash value of bonus offers and other benefits, subtract annual fees and other costs, and take into account the complexity of the rewards structure.

Balance transfer cards

Balance transfer cards

Our balance transfer rubric calculates how much money a card could save you with a low or 0% interest rate. Primary factors include the length and structure of the introductory APR period and the balance transfer fee. We also consider long-term value, such as whether the card offers rewards.

Branded airline cards

Branded airline cards

We calculate how many miles you could expect to earn from typical household spending and what those miles are worth based on our valuations. We add in the cash value of bonus offers and perks such as free checked bags and lounge access, and we subtract annual fees and other costs.

Branded hotel cards

Branded hotel cards

We calculate how many points you could expect to earn from typical household spending and what those points are worth based on our valuations. We add in the cash value of bonus offers and perks such as free nights and automatic elite status, and we subtract annual fees and other costs

Credit builder cards

Credit builder cards

Our rubric focuses on accessibility (such as whether a credit check is required), out-of-pocket costs (such as annual fees or minimum security deposits), credit-building features (such as bureau reporting and access to a free credit score) and upgrade options when you’re ready to move on.

College student cards

College student cards

Our formula calculates the rewards you could expect to earn on spending typical for a college student and takes into account the cash value of bonus offers and other benefits. Accessibility to students without established credit is a key consideration, as is the effort required to manage the card.

Small business cards

Small business cards

Our star ratings criteria for small business credit cards are similar to those for consumer cards, although they account for potentially higher spending levels and higher credit limits, as well as rewards structures and bonus categories tailored specifically to entrepreneurs and business operators.

Cash back cards

Our formula looks at how much cash back you could expect to earn from typical household spending. We consider rewards rates and categories, bonus offers and the cash value of other benefits, as well as any annual fee. The rating is also influenced by the complexity of the rewards structure.

Our rubric focuses on accessibility (such as whether a credit check is required), out-of-pocket costs (such as annual fees or minimum security deposits), credit-building features (such as bureau reporting and access to a free credit score) and upgrade options when you’re ready to move on.

College student cards

Our formula calculates the rewards you could expect to earn on spending typical for a college student and takes into account the cash value of bonus offers and other benefits. Accessibility to students without established credit is a key consideration, as is the effort required to manage the card.

Small business cards

Our star ratings criteria for small business credit cards are similar to those for consumer cards, although they account for potentially higher spending levels and higher credit limits, as well as rewards structures and bonus categories tailored specifically to entrepreneurs and business operators.

NerdWallet's Credit Cards team selects the best credit cards in various categories based on overall consumer value, as evidenced by star ratings, as well as their suitability for specific kinds of consumers. Factors in our evaluations include fees, promotional and ongoing APRs, and sign-up bonuses; for rewards cards, we consider earning and redemption rates, redemption options and redemption difficulty. Because different consumers can have markedly different needs, preferences and spending habits, we recognize that there is rarely a single credit card that is "best" for everyone. That's why this page includes a variety of options to suit an array of circumstances. Also, a single card is eligible to be chosen as among the "best" in multiple categories.

Our star ratings provide a quick way to compare credit cards. We assess the features of a card, score those features according to how they compare with other options on the market, and assign the card a rating of 1 to 5 stars based on those features. In general, a card that rates 4.5 stars will be a better value for more people than a card that rates 4.0 stars. However, the 4.0 card might be better than the 4.5 card for an individual consumer depending on that person’s circumstances. Further, ratings are only comparable within categories. If you're looking for rewards, for example, a 3.5-star cash back card will be of greater value than a 5.0-star balance transfer card or a 4.5-star credit-builder card. Star ratings are an important consideration in which cards appear on our "best" pages, but they are not the sole determining factor. Learn how NerdWallet rates credit cards.
