In the fourth quarter of 2026, the Discover it® Cash Back and Discover it® Student Cash Back are switching up their bonus cash-back categories for the first time in years.
From Oct. 1 to Dec. 31, 2026, cardholders can earn 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in combined spending on entertainment, restaurant and utility purchases when you activate these categories, as early as Sept. 1, 2026. All other purchases earn 1% back.
These cash-back categories are a departure from Discover's typical end-of-the-year calendar. Popular categories from previous years have tended to include specific merchants like Amazon and Target, which align with many shoppers' holiday spending plans. Depending on your budget for the last three months of the year, these new categories may be hit or miss.

Discover it® Student Cash Back
NerdWallet rating
  • Entertainment: This is first-time category for Discover's bonus calendar, and it will include qualifying expenses like movies, concerts, live sports, fall movie releases and holiday outings.
  • Restaurants: Bonus cash back can be earned on dining purchases including takeout and delivery.
  • Utilities: You’ll earn rewards on qualifying recurring household expenses like electricity, water, internet and phone services. It’s important to ask the service provider whether there’s a processing fee to use a credit card. If you plan to use your eligible Discover card in this category, make sure to change any recurring auto-pay methods. Also, consider whether you might get more value via other payment methods, including things like per-line discounts for debit card payments, which is common among cell phone carriers.
Discover cards are transitioning to Capital One, but reward rates and structures will remain intact.
