Detailed Review

The Discover it® Cash Back was my first foray into the world of bonus category cards long ago.

These days, my credit card stack involves varying types of products, some with annual fees and fancy perks, etc. But the $0-annual-fee Discover it® Cash Back is still a mainstay in my wallet because of its high cash back rate in rotating categories that typically align with my spending.

I won’t lie: The card requires a little work, which did trip me up at first. Every three months you’ll have to remember to activate the bonus category to qualify for 5% cash back. Plus, you have to keep track of which categories are currently earning bonus rewards. (At the top of each quarter, I update the bonus categories in the notes app on my phone, for easy reference when I’m paying). And there’s a spending cap, too, which means once you hit a certain amount of spending each quarter, your earnings drop down to 1% back.

Even so, for people who prefer cash back and don’t mind putting in a little work, the Discover it® Cash Back is well worth it. Here’s my take on the card.

🤓Nerdy Tip

Capital One acquired Discover in May 2025. As a result, Discover's cash-back and miles-earning credit cards, including the Discover it® Cash Back reviewed here, are being moved to the Capital One portfolio. My experience with the transition has been seamless so far. I got an email and a message atop my Discover dashboard stating that I would soon manage my account with Capital One and to keep using my card as is for now. Read more about the transition here.

Discover it® Cash Back: Basics

  • Shopping at Amazon. (You can do this by linking your eligible Discover card to your Amazon account, paying with that card and applying your cash back at checkout.)

  • Gift cards and eCertificates.

  • Up to 15% cash back or 15X miles when shopping online directly through Capital One Offers.

Benefits and Perks

5% cash back in rotating categories

The robust rewards on the Discover it® Cash Back make it one of the most valuable everyday cash-back cards available. Cardholders earn 5% cash back in rotating quarterly categories on up to $1,500 in purchases each quarter. (Activation required). All other purchases earn 1% back. You'd be hard-pressed to find a card with no annual fee that earns more than 5% cash back in bonus categories.

Those bonus categories have recently included gas stations, grocery stores and restaurants — spending areas that take up the majority of my budget every month. This makes it easy to pull out the card for most of my spending. I don’t have to go out of my way to make sure I’m maximizing my rewards.

If you max out the 5% rotating quarterly category rewards each year on this card — that is, if you activated and spent up to $1,500 in those categories each quarter all year — you'd earn $300 in bonus cash back, plus 1% back on every other purchase. For me, those lucrative ongoing rewards make this card a keeper.

A potentially valuable welcome offer

The Discover it® Cash Back comes with an uncommon first anniversary bonus for new cardmembers: INTRO OFFER: Receive a $200 statement credit when you spend $500 on purchases in your first 3 months of account opening. UNLIMITED CASHBACK MATCH: Discover will automatically match all the cash back you’ve earned at the end of your first year! There’s no minimum spending or maximum rewards. You could turn $150 cash back into $300.

(Note that the $200 statement credit is not eligible for the cashback match.)

Here's an example of how that two-tiered offer might work: Say you earned the $200 statement credit, and then you also earned $500 in cash back on other spending with the card throughout your first year. The cash back match offer would double that $500 to $1,000, for a total of $1,200 in rewards by the end of your first cardholder year.

For folks who plan to do a lot of spending on the card during that time, this unusual offer could prove incredibly valuable.

Introductory 0% APR period

The Discover it® Cash Back offers plenty of breathing room for paying off balances after opening the account. It comes with a generous introductory offer: 0% intro APR for 15 months on purchases and balance transfers, and then the ongoing APR of 18.74%-28.74% Variable APR. The balance transfer fee is an introductory 3% of the amount transferred, but can be as high as 5% on future balance transfers (see terms). That's on par with other balance transfer cards.

If you want to make a large purchase and pay it off over time, an intro APR is an especially valuable perk. Just keep in mind that if you're using the card as a balance transfer option, you'll likely want to avoid making new purchases with it and instead use the card solely for paying off debt. That might mean missing out on the rich welcome bonus offer.

Discover it® Cash Back vs. Chase Freedom Flex®

Looking at cards that offer 5% cash-back rewards on rotating quarterly categories? Chances are the Chase Freedom Flex® has been on your radar, too. At first glance, this card seems very similar to the Discover it® Cash Back. But if you look a bit closer, a few important differences stand out.

What these cards have in common:

  • 5% cash back in rotating quarterly bonus categories on the first $1,500 in combined purchases each quarter (activation required). All other non-bonus-category spending earns 1% back.

  • A variety of bonus categories. Historically, they’ve ranged from broad options like restaurants and gas stations to specific retailers like Walgreens or Walmart. Past bonus categories might help you judge whether the card could be useful to you in the future.

  • Requirement to activate quarterly categories.

  • No annual fee.

  • No foreign transaction fees.

What's different about the Chase Freedom Flex®:

  • Fixed bonus rewards in certain categories.

  • Rewards can be earned retroactively if you activate the categories by the 14th of the third month of the quarter; this is not the case with the Discover it® Cash Back.

For more information about how these cards differ, read NerdWallet's article comparing the Discover it® Cash Back and the Chase Freedom Flex®.

MORE NERDY PERSPECTIVES

If you're Team Cash Back, this is a great pickup. The quarterly bonus categories tend to be highly useful for my family, and that's before taking into account Discover's unique "matching" bonus. You won't be able to squeeze outsize value from your rewards, but if you're OK juggling bonus categories, it's an effective card.

Face, Happy, Head

When I got this card several years ago, I thought, How hard could it be to remember quarterly rotating categories? It's actually pretty hard. I write the categories for the Discover it on a piece of tape that sticks to the front of my card so I don't have to look it up constantly.

Sally French, writer/spokesperson, travel rewards

Of the two main cash back programs with rotating quarterly categories — Discover's and Chase's — I find that Discover's offerings are more valuable to more people. Chase's quarterly categories have been getting increasingly niche in recent years, while Discover tends to stick with major budget items.

Drawbacks and Considerations

Other cards offer simplicity

With rotating bonus categories that require quarterly activation, the Discover it® Cash Back is a relatively complicated card. If you want something more straightforward, try the Citi Double Cash® Card.

This card offers an impressive 2% cash back on everything — 1% back on purchases and 1% back when you pay them off. With it, you can rake in big rewards for everyday spending without having to mess with bonus categories. Its annual fee is $0.

How To Decide If It's Right For You

If you prefer a no-fuss card, you might want to pass on the Discover it® Cash Back. But if you’re willing to put in some extra effort for top-notch cash-back rewards, it might be the perfect fit for you.

Cashback Match details from Discover: No purchase minimums. After the first 12 consecutive billing periods that your new account is open, we will match all of the cash back rewards you've earned and apply them to your account in the following one or two billing periods. If your account is closed or no longer in the cash back reward program at the time we calculate your potential award, your cash back will not be matched. You've earned cash back rewards when they have posted to your account by the end of the 12th consecutive billing period. This promotional offer may not be offered in the future. This exclusive offer is available only to new cardmembers.

Alternate Pick: Simple, rich rewards

2% cash back, no activation required

Not in the mood to activate categories or keep track of what you're earning where? This card makes it easy. You get 2% cash back on every purchase — 1% when you buy something and 1% when you pay the bill.

Methodology

NerdWallet reviews credit cards with an eye toward both the quantitative and qualitative features of a card. Quantitative features are those that boil down to dollars and cents, such as fees, interest rates, rewards (including earning rates and redemption values) and the cash value of benefits and perks. Qualitative factors are those that affect how easy or difficult it is for a typical cardholder to get good value from the card. They include such things as the ease of application, simplicity of the rewards structure, the likelihood of using certain features, and whether a card is well-suited to everyday use or is best reserved for specific purchases. Our star ratings serve as a general gauge of how each card compares with others in its class, but star ratings are intended to be just one consideration when a consumer is choosing a credit card. Frequently asked questions

How does Discover 5% cash back work?

Discover offers 5% cash back in bonus categories that change every three months. You must opt in (or “activate”) online to be eligible for the latest categories. Once you do, you get 5% cash back on up to $1,500 per quarter in spending in the bonus categories. All other purchases earn 1% cash back. The 5% categories include common expenses like grocery stores, gas stations, restaurants and Amazon.com. See current and past categories here.

Is there a limit on cash back with Discover?

There’s no limit to how much total cash back you can earn. The 5% rewards (category activation required) are limited each quarter, but even after you hit the $1,500 quarterly spending cap in those categories, you’re still earning 1% cash back.

How do I redeem cash back with Discover?

The simplest way to redeem cash back with Discover is to take the money as a statement credit. If you have, say, $30 in cash back, you can apply it to your account and reduce your balance by $30. You can also get your cash back as a direct deposit into a bank account, spend it on Amazon.com or via PayPal, or redeem it for gift cards.

Does Discover match my cash back every year?

Discover doubles the rewards you earn in the first year — but only in the first year. This is a special offer only for new cardholders.

What credit score do I need to get the Discover it® Cash Back?

You’ll need at least average credit to qualify for the Discover it® Cash Back. But a credit score alone isn’t enough to qualify for any credit card. Issuers take into account your income, existing debts and other information.
