JK Moving Services offers full-service moves, including packing, unpacking, auto transport and storage. The company conducts local moves in the D.C. metropolitan area, as well as cross-state, cross-country and international moves from anywhere in the United States.

JK is middle-of-the-road when compared to other full-service moving companies we reviewed. The company doesn’t offer binding quotes, which can help customers budget for their move without unexpected costs, and you have to call the company to get updated tracking information on your moving truck.

However, JK doesn’t charge a fee to use a credit card, unlike some moving companies, and it charges a flat-fee deposit for all moves that’s fairly low compared to competitors. JK will also reimburse you if they deliver your stuff late, which some companies charge a fee for.

JK Moving basics

JK Moving Services was founded in 1982 and is headquartered in Sterling, Virginia. The company handles full-service local moves in Virginia, Maryland and Washington, D.C., plus long-distance and international moves starting in any U.S. state.

JK offers specialized services for seniors, government moves and employee relocation. Here are some of the company’s major offerings and what we think you should know.

Local and interstate moves

JK only conducts what they call “local” moves within the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area and up to 30-mile distances within a designated “commercial zone” in Maryland and Virginia (Fredericksburg, VA to Boonsboro, MD and Winchester, VA to Annapolis, MD). JK considers any move beyond this distance “intrastate.”

If the move crosses state lines, it’s an “interstate” move and considered long-distance. You don’t need to start in the D.C. metropolitan area to book a long-distance move.

Services and fees

  • JK charges a flat-fee deposit of $250 per move, which is low compared to other companies we reviewed.

  • JK does not charge a fee to pay with a credit card.

  • JK does not offer binding quotes, though a representative told NerdWallet on the phone that the company can offer not-to-exceed quotes on a case-by-case basis.

  • JK does not offer a paid day-certain delivery service, though a JK representative told NerdWallet over the phone that the company will reimburse you $250 to $300 per day if your delivery is late.

  • You can contact customer service via phone, live chat on the website or the JK app.

International moves

JK offers international moving services from the United States to other countries around the world. JK will assign you a dedicated moving manager to coordinate your move, including handling customs paperwork and communicating with transportation providers. JK will also connect you with a coordinator in your new country of residence to set up a crew for unloading and unpacking.

JK can also ship your car overseas. The company estimates that it will take six to eight weeks to ship all of your belongings by sea, and eight to 10 days by air.

Storage

Many people who move need extra time to find or prepare new homes, which is why movers that offer storage can be especially helpful. JK has its own storage facilities in Virginia and Maryland, which are climate-controlled and equipped with 24/7 video surveillance.

JK also partners with independent storage companies to offer storage in other states and countries.

Packing and unpacking

JK offers three options for packing, from highest to lowest cost:

  • Full-service includes wrapping and packing for all of your stuff.

  • Fragile-only packing includes specific items that you choose that need to be packed and moved with extra care, such as dishes, lamps or musical instruments.

  • DIY packing gives you the “tools to independently pack your items,” likely items including boxes and bubble wrap.

JK also offers what they call a “full unpack,” where a moving team completely unpacks, unwraps and places items in their new home, such as setting lamps in the right location or filling a new kitchen cabinet with dishes.

Vehicle shipping

JK partners with ShipYourCarNow, a national auto shipping company, to handle vehicle transport within the U.S. You can choose open-rack transport for a lower-cost option, or opt for enclosed shipping if you’re moving a vintage or high-value vehicle.

For international moves, you can choose between roll-on shipping or container shipping. Container shipping offers more protection but comes at a higher cost.

Tracking your shipment

To find out where your moving truck is located in transit, you’ll need to call JK customer service. There’s no online tracking service.

Customer service

To evaluate customer satisfaction, we consider Better Business Bureau (BBB) ratings, which is based on customer reviews and the number of complaints customers have filed with the BBB in an effort to resolve an issue with a company. We also consider complaints filed with the U.S. Department of Transportation.

We found that JK’s customer satisfaction rating with the BBB is fairly high compared to its competitors' ratings, giving it a good standing. It does have a relatively high ratio of customer complaints filed with the BBB, but fewer complaints filed with the Department of Transportation compared to its competitors.

JK Moving cost

Like most moving companies, JK doesn’t provide reliable price quotes online. The quote takes several factors into account, including how far you're moving, how much stuff you have and any additional challenges (such as large furniture and narrow hallways).

To estimate the price of your move, JK will need to do a walkthrough to see what you’re moving and how hard it will be to get those things out of the house and onto the truck. JK offers three walkthrough options:

  • In-person consultation at your home if you live in D.C., Virginia or Maryland.

  • Virtual live consultation with a JK representative.

  • Self-survey on your own time using an AI technology called Yembo.

🤓Nerdy Tip

Beware of websites that claim to tell you how much your move is going to cost. None of the full-service moving companies we reviewed provide reliable price quotes online. Virtually every moving company requires contact with a salesperson and a visual survey of your belongings to provide a reliable cost estimate.

Things JK won’t move

JK will pack and ship most things, but not:

  • Cash, jewelry and irreplaceable mementos.

  • Credit cards, Social Security cards and licenses.

  • Legal documents such as deeds, medical records, wills, and car and home titles.

  • Flammable items such as gasoline, lighter fluid and propane tanks.

  • Chemicals such as paint, fertilizers and pesticides.

  • Batteries.

  • Perishable food.

  • Live plants.

What if JK damages my stuff?

Moving companies are liable for loss or damage to your stuff during transportation. But the extent of that liability depends on which kind of liability coverage you choose. Federal law requires movers to offer you two liability options

Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Liability & Protection. Accessed Jun 24, 2025.
:

  • Released Value. This protection is free but only pays 60 cents per pound. So if the movers ruin your 300-pound couch, you only get $180, even if the couch was expensive.

  • Full Value Protection. Under this option, the mover is liable for the replacement value of items that it loses, damages or destroys. You have to pay extra for this option, but unless you explicitly choose the Released Value option, movers must automatically move your stuff under the Full Value Protection level of liability. In this scenario, if the movers ruin your 300-pound couch, they have to repair the couch or pay the replacement value of the couch. This option also covers your stuff while it’s in JK storage.

🤓Nerdy Tip

Liability coverage isn’t the same thing as insurance, so state insurance laws don’t apply to the coverage movers provide.

Methodology

NerdWallet's Home Services team evaluated full-service moving companies across several factors, including availability of online quotes, upfront payment or deposit requirements, fees to pay with a credit card, availability of binding and/or not-to-exceed quotes, availability of additional services, geographical breadth, availability of full-value protection, truck trackability, availability of day-certain delivery, Better Business Bureau (BBB) customer rating, number of BBB complaints over the last three years per 100 vehicles, number of U.S. Department of Transportation complaints over the last four years per 100 vehicles and customer service contact options. Because costs can vary with the circumstances of each move, it's best to get quotes from multiple companies before making a decision.
