PNC POINTS has been a total disappointment to me and, in my opinion, borders on being a scam. Here’s my personal experience: Day 0 – ordered 5 gift cards from the site. Day 7 – rec’d e-mail the cards were shipped via USPS. Day 17 – no cards, called for update. Was told the order was in process and the shipped status was that they were ordered from the vendor, expect 4-6 wks for delivery. Day 60 – Received e-mail that the order was non-deliverable and points were put back in my account. Called for explanation – cards no longer available. Website was not manned 24×7 so orders are allowed to be taken for items no longer offered. First of all, who ‘mans’ their website? Secondly, was it manned only once every 6 weeks? I guess someone mans their online banking website and physically types in each account transaction? Come on now – who are they trying to fool? Every call to their so-called customer service center yielded no answers, just rude, arrogant folks. hey PNC – shape up. This is nonsense.

I don’t know about the PNC points program listed here, but the PNC points program I received an offer for borders on being a scam.

Most card points programs feature returns of about 1% on purchases. If I spend $3000 on my Amazon (Chase) Visa, I get $30 Amazon credit to spend or something of equivalent value. In fact, with some of the plane ticket deals they feature, I can get an even better return.

PNC is sending out offers to consumers that claim to offer “4X Points!” 4 points on the dollar. Which would be a great deal if the points were worth 1% each. But they’re not.

A $5 gift card costs 3500 points to redeem. 3500 points divided by 4 pt/$ is 875 points, or $8.75 worth of value. The actual value of the points is something like 0.55% or less.

So don’t be fooled by “4X point” offers. Figure out how much those points actually buy you before taking such programs into account when taking an additional credit card.
