AmEx is kicking off 2021 by adding valuable perks, most notably for holders of The Platinum Card® from American Express

From Jan. 1 through June 30, 2021, the $695-annual-fee premium travel card will offer $30 per month in statement credits on eligible PayPal purchases. That's a total of up to $180 in credits over six months. Terms apply (see rates and fees).

Unlike a number of the card's travel-centric perks — which are harder to use amid the COVID-19 pandemic — this benefit should be easy to enjoy. Many of the largest online merchants accept PayPal for transactions, including Target, Walmart and Best Buy.

The move comes as other temporary benefits that had been added to the card, including wireless and streaming credits, came to an end in 2020.

How it works

If you have a PayPal account (which is free to set up) and you've linked The Platinum Card® from American Express to that account as the default, you're all set. Enrollment in the offer isn't required, and the credit is automatic.

Select PayPal as your payment method when you check out, and up to $30 will be credited back to your monthly statement.

You’ll still earn Membership Rewards points on the transaction, too. (Payments sent to friends and family via PayPal aren't eligible for the credits.)

Terms apply.

Other offers for the Platinum

In addition to the PayPal perk, eligible holders of The Platinum Card® from American Express are seeing other limited-time "AmEx Offers" in their account, also available through June 30, 2021:

Offers for The Business Platinum Card® from American Express and other AmEx business cards

The Business Platinum Card® from American Express doesn't qualify for the PayPal offer, but eligible cardholders can earn extra Membership Rewards points on several spending categories through June 30, 2021. All of the following have a cap of 80,000 points per category:

  • 4 bonus points per $1 spent on eligible U.S. shipping.

  • 4 bonus points per $1 spent on eligible U.S. advertising.

  • 4 bonus points per $1 spent on eligible U.S. gas purchases.

As with the AmEx Offers mentioned above for the personal version of the Platinum card, these offers aren't automatic. You’ll need to manually add them to your card if they appear.

In addition, those who hold eligible small-business credit cards, like The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express and the The American Express Blue Business Cash™ Card, can receive $25 back via statement credit on eligible transactions greater than $500 up to 10 times, through June 30, 2021.
