In its latest round of positive changes to help its members during the pandemic, American Airlines announced new incentives for those wanting to qualify for Platinum Pro and Executive Platinum status in 2021, and a new Oneworld alliance benefit.

Elite choice awards for Platinum Pro and Executive Platinum

Elite choice awards is a new benefit introduced by American Airlines for 2021. Upon qualifying for Platinum Pro or Executive Platinum status, members will be able to choose an elite choice award. Platinum Pro elites can choose one award, while Executive Platinum members can choose two.

These elite choice awards are interesting and impressive. At the Platinum Pro tier, a gift of 20,000 bonus miles is a strong option. NerdWallet values American Airlines miles at 1 cent each, so the 20,000 miles are worth $200. If you have an American Airlines credit card, you will receive 25,000 AAdvantage miles, which is worth $250.

The 15% award discount could be meaningful as well, especially if you can use it on a first class round-trip award or an AAnytime award (usually pricier than a MileSAAver award).

At the Executive Platinum level, the awards are even more valuable — and you can select two. At this tier, you could choose 25,000 AAdvantage miles (30,000 if you have an American Airlines credit card), which are worth $250 (or $300). Another useful selection is the gift of Gold status, which could be a nice present for someone who is a fan of American Airlines but doesn’t have status themselves.

American has been offering many incentives throughout the year to keep its elites loyal, and if you’re aiming for Platinum Pro or Executive Platinum status, these awards are a nice perk to look forward to. Here are the reduced elite status qualification requirements for Platinum Pro and Executive Platinum for 2021:

As Oneworld’s highest tier, Emerald’s best perks include access to first class lounges, first class priority check-in and a fast track at security.

If you’re able to qualify for Platinum Pro status, the elite choice awards and Oneworld Emerald status certainly sweeten the deal. These two meaningful perks for American’s highest elites follow other customer-friendly changes implemented by American Airlines earlier in the year, including:

    • Reduced elite status qualification requirements for 2020.

    • Extended the expiration of systemwide upgrades for Executive Platinum elites.

    • Reduced qualifications for Executive Platinum rewards.

    • Extended Admirals Club memberships by six months.

    • Offered an opportunity to spend toward Million Miler status.

    • Offered an American Airlines Vacations credit up to $400 for elites.

    • Reduced elite status qualification requirements for 2021 and added an extra three months to attain status.

    • Offered an EQD waiver for 2021 for AAdvantage cardholders.

American also paused all mileage expiration through June 30, 2021, eliminated redeposit fees on canceled award tickets, removed service charges when members book award tickets through the reservation desk and established a more generous change fee policy.

The bottom line

Due to COVID-19, travel patterns aren’t what they used to be, and it’s nice to see American continue to help its loyalists during this time. If you’re able to reach Platinum Pro or Executive Platinum status, you have a few new and exciting perks to look forward to.
