What to know about Patelco Credit Union’s personal loans

I'd consider Patelco Credit Union whether you're already a member or willing to join.

Personal loan rates range from 6.99% to 17.90%, which are lower than those of many other lenders, and you can borrow anywhere from $300 to $100,000. You won’t find many online lenders or banks capping rates under 18% or offering such a wide range of loan amounts.

Patelco lets you share the loan with a co-borrower if you want. You could also apply with a co-signer or put down collateral to secure the loan. Many lenders don’t offer this variety of loan options, which may help you qualify or get a lower rate.

While you have to be a member of Patelco Credit Union to get one of its personal loans, I’d consider joining if you’re not. Becoming a member is pretty accessible. And you can pre-qualify and check your rates first without having a membership, then join if you decide to take out a loan.

What we like most about Patelco

  • No origination fees: While many online lenders charge an origination fee that can be up to 10% of the loan amount, Patelco does not charge this fee — which keeps the cost of borrowing low.
  • You may qualify for rate reductions: If you’re eligible for Patelco’s LevelUp rewards program based on your credit tier, the lender will reduce your loan’s annual percentage rate by 0.5 percentage points after you make 12 consecutive on-time payments. You could qualify for up to three rate reductions over the course of your loan, for a total reduction of 1.5 percentage points. This is a rare perk offered by personal loan lenders.
  • You can choose from several loan sizes and repayment terms: Patelco’s range of loan amounts and repayment terms make this lender a good option for nearly any loan purpose. If you need money to cover a minor emergency expense, Patelco’s loans start at $300. If you’re planning a major home renovation, Patelco may let you borrow up to $100,000. Repayment terms range from 6 months to 7 years. Most lenders don’t offer as wide a range of loan amounts and terms.

Why Patelco may not be right for you

  • You may not qualify if you have bad credit: Patelco requires personal loan applicants to have a credit score of at least 630. If your score is lower, you’ll likely get denied.
  • You must become a credit union member to get your loan funded: In order to get a Patelco personal loan, you must be a member of the credit union. If you’re not eligible for membership based on where you live or work, you can also gain membership by joining the Financial Fitness Association. Joining the financial literacy nonprofit normally comes with a $8 membership fee, but Patelco covers that cost for the first year.
  • Funding can take two to three days: If you need funds immediately, you will need to look for a lender offering same-day funding.

Frequently asked questions

Q: What can I use a Patelco Credit Union loan for?

A: You can use a Patelco personal loan for nearly anything, including debt consolidation, home improvement, medical and dental expenses, emergency expenses and more. However, you can’t use a Patelco loan for business expenses, investing, gambling or illegal activities.

Q: How much income do I need to earn to qualify for a Patelco Credit Union personal loan?

A: Patelco does not have a set income level you must reach in order to qualify for a personal loan, but your debt-to-income ratio must be no higher than 55%, including housing costs. Calculate your DTI by dividing your monthly debt payments and housing costs by your monthly income. Multiply that number by 100 to get the debt-to-income ratio expressed as a percentage.

Q: Does Patelco report payments to the major credit bureaus?

A: Patelco reports loan payments to Experian but not Equifax or TransUnion. If you maintain a history of on-time personal loan payments, only your Experian credit report will see a positive impact. Future creditors, employers or landlords checking your Equifax or TransUnion credit reports won’t see that positive payment history.

Q: Can I change my monthly payment due date?

A: Yes, Patelco lets you change your monthly payment date once throughout the life of the loan. Changing your payment date is helpful if you have a new payday schedule or need to make an adjustment due to other upcoming expenses. However, some lenders let you alter your payment due date more than once.

Q: Does Patelco offer any hardship accommodations if I’m not able to make an upcoming payment?

A: You may be eligible for payment deferment or a temporary payment reduction if you’re not able to make an upcoming loan payment. Contact Patelco prior to missing your payment, and request a hardship accommodation. Otherwise, Patelco charges a late fee of either $5 or 3% of the monthly payment amount. There is a 10-day grace period before the late fee is charged.
