Economy class is the most affordable way to fly on Qatar Airways, which offers service from more than a dozen U.S. cities. The airline has a major hub in Doha, the capital of Qatar, providing travelers with a reasonably priced option into the Middle East region for their trip.
Here’s what you can expect if you’re looking to book an economy class fare with Qatar.
What to expect when flying economy with Qatar Airways
Baggage allowance on Qatar
One major reason people will choose a higher fare class is to save money on checked bags, but Qatar Airways has a unique set of rules when it comes to baggage allowance.
The specific number and weight of bags you’re allowed to carry with you on your trip depends on the route you’re flying and the cabin class you purchased.
However, all economy fares include one piece of carry-on baggage up to 15 pounds (except for flights to or from Brazil, where it’s up to 22 pounds). The maximum dimensions for carry-on bags are 20 inches long x 15 inches wide x 10 inches deep. You may also take one small item, like a purse, umbrella or walking stick. Duty-free items purchased before your flight and an infant’s carrying basket are allowed, as well as books and a small camera or binoculars.
For checked baggage, there is a maximum weight allowed on certain routes, while on others it’s a bag limit.
Route | Economy Lite | Economy Classic | Economy Convenience | Economy Comfort |
|---|---|---|---|---|
To/From Africa/Americas | One bag up to 50 pounds. | 2 bags up to 50 pounds each. | 2 bags up to 50 pounds each. | 2 bags up to 50 pounds each. |
All other routes | 44 pounds total combined weight — as many bags as you want. | 55 pound total combined weight — as many bags as you want. | 66 pound total combined weight — as many bags as you want. | 77 pound total combined weight — as many bags as you want. |
For the routes subject to weight limits, there is no limit to the number of bags you can bring as long as the combined weight is under the weight limit.
Note that no one piece of luggage can exceed 70 pounds, and there are also maximum dimensions based on route. For flights to or from Africa or the Americas, your bag can’t exceed 158 centimeters (about 62 inches) when you add length + width + height. For all other flights, the max dimensions are 300 centimeters (about 118 inches).
Boarding
Qatar boards in zones with economy generally going toward the end. If you have Oneworld Sapphire status and fly economy, you'll still get access to priority boarding.
Your preference to board early may largely depend on if you need overhead bin space for your single carry-on (more on that below) or if you prefer to be the last to board (to spend as little time as possible in your economy seat).
Qatar Airways economy seats
The size of the current Qatar Airways economy class seats are among the widest compared with those on other long- haul economy flights. All economy seats feature a headrest, seatback screens with entertainment and dining.

Classic vs. Convenience vs. Comfort
Qatar Airways economy cabins have four fare classes to choose from including Lite, Classic, Convenience and Comfort. However, Lite fares are only available on certain routes, so we’ll focus on the other three main fare types that are widely available.

Qatar Economy Classic vs. Convenience
Classic fares are the next cheapest after Lite, but they come with a price: You can only choose your seat when you check into your flight online. These tickets also earn the least award miles with 50% Avios earnings.
Convenience tickets offer more affordable upgrades and include seat selection and one free ticket change as a perk. You’ll also earn 75% Avios of the distance flown.
Qatar Economy Comfort vs. Convenience
Convenience fares allow you to choose your seat and earn more miles than Classic, but Comfort does one better.
Comfort fares allow you to earn the most Avios — a full 100% of the distance flown — plus, you can choose a preferred seat and have the best seat upgrade rates.
Does Qatar Airways have premium economy?
No, the airline does not offer a premium economy product. The closest available ticket is its Economy Comfort class airfare.
Though still in the economy cabin, these flyers get access to preferred seats and seat selection, get better upgrade rates and earn more Avios than other economy fares.

Pack one bag and a personal item to carry on
When it comes to carry-on items, Qatar baggage rules are the same as most airlines, which allow travelers to bring one carry-on bag plus a personal item.
Examples of personal items include a purse or briefcase, umbrella, duty-free items and reading material. If you think your arms will be quite full, stow bulky items in your checked luggage.
Join the Qatar Airways Student Club
Qatar Airways is one of the few airlines that have a student program with perks like added baggage allowances and free Wi-Fi. The coolest perk of the program is an upgrade to the next level of tier status as a graduation gift.
Book flights with the right card
There aren’t any co-branded Qatar Airways credit cards available to U.S.-based flyers, but Qatar Privilege Club is a direct transfer partner of three bank programs: American Express Membership Rewards, Bilt Rewards and Citi ThankYou Points. You can transfer each currency at a ratio of 1:1, and you can earn points in their respective programs quickly by spending strategically on a travel credit card. Terms Apply.
