Earning hotel elite status can sound like a big win, but the perks vary widely from one hotel to another. Some tiers offer benefits such as complimentary breakfast and room upgrades, while others offer far less.
While you can earn status through actual hotel stays, holding the right co-branded credit card is the easiest path to elite status for most people.
What hotel status is best? That depends on where you travel and how often you plan to stay at a single hotel chain. Rather than a comprehensive ranked list, the NerdWallet Travel team reviewed six major U.S. hotel chain loyalty programs and selected these top picks based on the value of the perks relative to the eligibility requirements.
For most people, the benefits from midtier status with Hilton Honors will provide the most easily accessible guaranteed perks, while World of Hyatt Globalist status offers the best benefits for top-tier elites.

Hilton Honors™ Gold Status: The best value status for most people
Gold status with Hilton Honors is the best midtier status of any hotel loyalty program, offering a low barrier to entry along with a great combination of benefits, including:
Food and beverage credits, complimentary breakfast or club lounge access: Receive a daily food and beverage credit for up to two people at U.S. properties (varies by brand) or complimentary continental breakfast at select brands abroad.
18 points per dollar spent at Hilton hotels: Members earn 10 base points plus an 80% bonus for Gold members.
Complimentary room upgrades: Gold members receive complimentary room upgrades at check-in (when available), including executive floor rooms.
Fifth night free on award stays: Book five nights with points and pay for only four.
No other midtier loyalty status offers a daily food and beverage credit (or complimentary breakfast), making this a standout benefit for Hilton Honors Gold members.
Additionally, Hilton and World of Hyatt are the only major loyalty programs that waive resort fees on award stays for all members, whether or not they have status.
How to qualify for Hilton Honors Gold status
You can qualify for Hilton Honors Gold status with 25 nights, 15 stays or $6,000 in eligible spend at Hilton properties each year. However, the easiest way to grab those extra perks is by getting a credit card that automatically gives you status.

World of Hyatt Globalist: The best top-tier hotel elite status
World of Hyatt was named NerdWallet’s best hotel program of 2026, and its top-tier Globalist elite status is the most generous of any major loyalty program. Benefits include:
Club lounge access or complimentary breakfast: Enjoy daily continental breakfast and evening hors d’oeuvres in the Club lounge. If no lounge is available, receive free daily breakfast for up to two adults and two children.
Room upgrades at check-in: Eligible for upgrades on all room types, including standard suites, when available.
Earn 6.5 points per dollar on Hyatt stays: Globalists earn five base points plus a 30% bonus.
Free parking on award nights: Parking fees are waived when booking free nights with points or award certificates.
4 p.m. late checkout: Guaranteed upon request at most properties, excluding Hyatt Vacation Club resorts.
Guest of Honor stays: Share Globalist benefits with others by booking a stay in their name using points or free night certificates.
As a Hyatt Globalist, you’ll be assigned a dedicated concierge, who can provide high-end customer service for all things Hyatt. You’ll also earn valuable “milestone rewards” on the path to Globalist status, which allow you to pick additional benefits as you accrue qualifying nights and base points, including bonus World of Hyatt points, suite upgrade awards, free night certificates and more.
While Hyatt status for top-tier elites is hard to match, Hyatt’s footprint is relatively limited. As of August 2025, Hyatt had around 1,100 worldwide properties. By comparison, Marriott had almost 8,800 properties and Hilton had around 7,700. Although the benefits are generally better with Hyatt Globalist than Marriott Platinum or Hilton Diamond status, you’ll want to make sure there are Hyatt properties in the places you travel before pursuing Globalist status.
NerdWallet's ratings are determined by our editorial team. The scoring formula takes into account the type of card being reviewed (such as cash back, travel or balance transfer) and the card's rates, fees, rewards and other features.
Hyatt Globalist status requires earning 100,000 base points each year (equivalent to spending $20,000 at Hyatt) or 60 annual qualifying nights, including both paid stays and free-night award redemptions. No credit card offers a direct path to Hyatt Globalist status, but the World of Hyatt Credit Card gives you five qualifying night credits each year, and you can earn an additional two qualifying night credits for every $5,000 you spend on the card.
You can also earn Lifetime Globalist status by earning at least one million base points.
Hotel elite status can be rewarding for frequent travelers who consistently stay with one hotel chain. Holding the right credit card is generally the easiest path to midtier status, allowing you to bypass qualifying night or base point requirements. Just be sure you’ll use the benefits you’re effectively paying for with a credit card’s annual fee. Occasional travelers or vacation rental fans can probably pass on hotel status.
