Credit Card Review: Capital One® Spark Cash for Business

Author:

Verdict – Capital One Spark Cash Business offers 2% back on all purchases with no limit on spending, making it a solid option if your expenses are high or vary throughout the year.

The Capital One Spark Cash Business is a solid credit card that guarantees you 2% in total rewards annually. There’s no limit to how much you can earn and cash rewards don’t expire.

If your spending is mostly on categories like gas, dining, office supplies and other business needs though, you may want to consider other great business cards, like the Chase Ink Cash card with 5% back on cable and telecom services as well as office supplies on the first $25K spent annually, 2% on gas and dining on the first $15k spent annually, and an unlimited 1% elsewhere.

The card’s annual fee is $59, waived the first year. That’s not so terrible compared to, say, the AmEx Gold or Platinum, but the Chase Ink Cash and Classic, AmEx SimplyCash and others have no annual fee at all.

While looking at the Capital One website I noticed that they added a few sign up bonuses:
$100 for charging $1000 within the first 3 months
    and
$50 bonus when you sign up for one or more employee cards within the first 60 days

Seems to be the only straight 2% cash back Visa card out there right now. Almost makes me want to register a sole proprietorship to apply for it.

I am a bit confused about how the rewards are calculated for this card:
why the cash back is calculated at 1.92% (although the description says 2%)?
another Capital one card (Venture Rewards) is calculated at 2.0%, what’s the difference?

Hm, the rewards rate should be 2% for both, there might be a glitch. Thanks for letting us know!

I am a bit surprised to see that it still says 1.91% (and Capital One Venture Rewards still says 2%) after TWO MONTHS since my initial report.
I guess what’s written on this website does not really matter to you.

          Hi there,

Thanks for the heads-up! It’s been fixed now. We appreciate your patience as we are a very small organization working on a number of different products, and as always we appreciate feedback and suggestions.

I just applied for the Capital One Cash Back card from the link on this site. Upon submitting the application the site kicked out a “session timed-out” error and requested I re-apply. After completing the process sucessfully the second time…I received an immediated response “my reqest was denied”. My sucessful corporation is over 30 years old, with a sterling record and I have a credit score over 780. I followed up with a senior csr who coulo confirmed two applications were submitted…both inquiring of my credit score…both effectively redusing that score…she could not explain Cap Ones policy…said wait for the letter. BE careful OR APPLY OVER THE PHONE.

I have similar credit though a bit lower. I average in the mid 700s across all three bureaus. They pulled all three reports and I was also denied. The denial letter made no sense. The reasons were all BS that simply didn’t jive with what’s in my reports. I called and asked for a manual review and then I called back a few days later to check the status and it was still denied after manual review! I was told I would be receiving another letter following that manual review. I waited 2 weeks and never got one. So, I called back at that time asking where my letter was and they said they’d send another letter.I doubt I got a real manual review. After another two weeks and no letter, I put together a nice packet with a letter arguing my case, a copy of my original denial, copies of all three credit reports from the day of denial and statements from my Amex Plum (for which I was approved later in the same day I got denied the Spark!) and my Ink (which I got the week before) just to show them what they were missing (it was a lot of business). I actually just called today to check if they received it along with any status update and I was told it has been assigned to specific supervisor who will be handling it and that he/she would call with an answer. Fingers crossed.

Capital One is terrible when it comes to this. It would seem the automated computer approval system makes all the decisions and can easily get tripped up by something silly. Manual reviews are a joke. So, I hope this more thorough and persistent approach yields a positive result. Like you, I should not have been denied. And capital one further complicates the process and makes it more frustrating by being the only major card issuer I have ever dealt with who doesn’t have credit analysts available to speak to applicants.

This reality that we have experienced is really a shame for strong applicants and really bad business on their part to have so many good applicants slip through the cracks and get denied. The irony of it all, being a company that deals more in subprime applicants than other issuers, is that this is probably a counter-measure to balance their risk portfolio. BUT, by being EVEN MORE draconian in their approvals for better cards, it ends up being counter-productive because it’s likely their approval process being overly automated and inflexible that prevents them from having more low risk card holders like you and me.

I will update the results of the packet I mailed. Perhaps you could try it too.
