Credit Card Review: Capital One® VentureOne Rewards Credit Card

Author:
STEPHEN

This VentureOne Rewards card is the no annual fee version of the Capital One Venture cards, and earns 1.25 Miles per $1 spent.

There is also a version called the Venture Rewards that earns you 2 Miles per $1 spent, but comes with a $59 annual fee, which is waived the first year.

VentureOne Rewards(this card) Venture Rewards
Miles per $1 Spent 1.25 2
Sign Up Bonus 10,000 Miles (worth ~$100) 10,000 Miles (worth ~$100)
Annual Fee $0 $59, waived the first year

Bottomline – If you spend at least a few hundred dollars per month, it is better to pay the $59 annual fee and get the higher rewards rate (2 Miles per $1 spent rather than 1.25 per $1 spent). If you plan on holding the card for a shorter period of time, the break-even point is much much lower.

Break-even point between the VentureOne Rewards (This Card) and the Venture Rewards
You’re almost always better off paying the $59 annual fee and getting the 10,000 Mile sign up bonus and the 2 Miles per $1 spent. See this post comparing the two versions for the full geeky maths about how we came up with this table.

Time frame When is Venture Rewards Better Than VentureOne?
1 Year Always
2 Years If you spend over $3,933 a year, on average
3 Years If you spend over $5,244 a year, on average
4 Years If you spend over $5,900 a year, on average
5 Years If you spend over $6,293 a year, on average
6 Years If you spend over $6,556 a year, on average

How do you guys compare the VentureOne (1.25%, no annual fee) to the regular Venture (2%, $59 annual fee)? In which situations is one better than the other? And how do they compare to the Chase Sapphire? Thanks!

Hey Mike, let me know whether this is helpful:
      http://www.nerdwallet.com/blog/2010/rewards-showdown-chase-sapphire-vs-capital-one-venture/

As for whether the Venture or VentureOne is better for you, it’s really a question of how much money you spend and whether that extra 0.75% is worth more than $59. Plus, the Venture card offers $100 worth of signup bonus, which almost covers three years of card use (since the first year is free).

For an apples-to-apples comparison, our rewards credit card page takes all fees and signup bonuses into account.

We’ve rolled up our sleeves and tried to answer Mike’s question once and for all in the post. Venture Rewards is almost always the better card, if you plan on spending at least a few hundred dollars per month.

Terrible service from Capital One. Double dipped a payment in January. Drafted on the wrong bank account in May. Reluctant to help in payment issues. Going back to US Bank FlexPerks card.
