Credit Card Review: Union Plus Card

Author:
STEPHEN

This card is geared toward union members, and offers discounts and benefits meant for union members, so we have to assume that this card is so popular only because of aggressive union-centric marketing. But the bottom line is, if you qualify to get this card, then there is a better card elsewhere that you also qualify for.

Here’s our beef:

  • Rewards should be your main priority if you are able to pay off your credit card bill each month. You can easily find a great credit card for rewards, which should net you something like 2% or more in reward rebates. The Union Plus doesn’t pay rewards.
  • The biggest incentive advertised by the Union Plus is access to “exclusive discounts”, but they’re hardly exclusive. Most issuers offer similar, if not better, discounts and coupons through their own online malls.
  • If you carry a balance month-to-month, you can find a low interest card for your own level of credit.
  • No matter what, a card with no annual fee is pretty easy to come by, instead of paying this card’s annoying $0-$39 sliding scale annual fee.

The customer service at Union Plus is terrible. I had two representatives give me incorrect information about sending a payment that led to me getting negative credit reporting. I spoke to three “supervisors” who were snarky, passive aggressive and impatient, who had no concern for this and basically told me that there was nothing they could do about it because there was no record or notes on these conversations. (What?? In my experience costumer service reps at real credit card companies record notes on advice they give to customers.) They basically accused me of lying and gave me the generic snail mail complaint PO Box.
Even before this I always thought the reps seemed poorly trained and unprofessional. My low interest rates also skyrocketed. Since I’m paying so much for this card, I would expect a better service.
