International Van Lines

Full-service moving company handling long-distance, international and local moves.

Services

When you book International Van Lines, the company will handle the loading, unloading and transportation for your move. Here's how its overall services break down.

  • Long-distance moves: International Van Lines says that about 85% of the moves it handles are long-distance, or moves across state lines. If a truck or crew is not available in your area, the company will work with its preferred agents to help get you one.

  • International moves: The company handles moves across more than 180 countries, moving both ocean and air freight.

    • Ocean freight shipping: The company can ship containers between ports or directly to your door.

    • Air freight shipping: While a typical ocean freight delivery can take up to a month, air freight delivery can take less than a week, according to the International Van Lines website.

  • Local moves: The company handles certain local moves over shorter distances for homes of more than two bedrooms.

  • Vehicle moves: The company can transport cars and other motor vehicles in enclosed or open-top trailers.

  • Storage: The company offers short- and long-term options. Temperature-controlled storage is also available.

How to get a quote

While International Van Lines doesn’t offer instant quotes on its website, you can request a quote online or by phone at 877-647-1336. Pricing varies based on the type of service and distance.

To finalize your quote, the company will generally need to survey the household belongings you want to move. This survey can be done virtually by sending a video of your belongings taken with your phone.

What’s included in the basic price?

Your quote includes the following:

  • Move coordination. An account representative will be assigned to you to manage the details of your move.

  • Loading, transport and unloading. The company will handle the heavy lifting and transport of all your belongings.

  • Released Value Protection coverage, the minimum protection required by federal law. You can purchase more for greater coverage.

Unlike most major moving companies, International Van Lines requires a deposit of 25% of the total cost of your move. You can pay the deposit with a credit card, so it may be a good idea to apply for one with a long 0% intro APR or a large sign-up bonus. However, you must pay the balance of the move with a cashier’s check, money order or cash.

Loss and damage protection

Limited liability coverage of 60 cents per pound per article comes included in your quote. Because this coverage is so minimal, it’s a good idea to ask International Van Lines about adding more protection, even though it costs extra.

The company also offers marine insurance.

Changes and cancellations

To change or cancel a move, you need to send an email to your relocation coordinator. Certain changes could affect the cost of your move. International Van Lines will refund your deposit if you cancel up to 48 hours before the scheduled pickup date.
