U-Box is U-Haul’s moving container and storage service. It operates in all 50 states and, unlike similar services, allows you to ship your belongings to almost any port in the world. You can get instant quotes on local or interstate moves through its website.
U-Box containers are large, plywood crates with large doors covered in weather-resistant material. The interior of a box measures about 56 inches wide, 95 inches long and 83.5 inches high — large enough to fit a King mattress standing up, according to U-Haul.
You can use these containers for moving, storage or both:
Moving: U-Box handles moves locally, across state lines or internationally. You can book as many containers as you need, load them with your furniture and other belongings and U-Haul will pick them up and deliver them to your destination. You don’t need to pay for containers you don’t use. You can also pay an additional fee for local professional moving services to handle the loading and delivery.
Storage: You can pay a monthly fee to store U-Box containers at a U-Haul facility or at home. (A month of U-Box container storage is included in basic U-Box moving quotes. )
How to get a quote
You can get an instant moving quote for local and long-distance moves on the U-Box home page by entering your ZIP code, destination ZIP code and loading date. From there, you can adjust the number of boxes you’re requesting and add a delivery method.
Instant moving quotes aren’t available for international moves, except for moves from the U.S. to Canada. For other international moves, you can complete a form requesting a quote for an international move, and a U-Box representative will follow up with a quote.
U-Haul accepts credit cards as payment, so consider paying for your U-Box move with a credit card that has a long 0% intro APR or a large sign-up bonus.
What’s included in the basic price?
An instant moving quote from U-Box includes the following:
One month container use.
24 furniture pads per container.
Shipping and fuel.
Loading and delivery isn’t included in the quote. But you can choose to add the following services to your quote:
Delivery. For an additional fee, your U-Box containers will be delivered to your address.
Full-service delivery and load. For a higher fee, you can hire professional movers near you to deliver, load, transport and unload your containers.
If you want to avoid delivery and loading fees, you can choose from these options:
Self-delivery. You can pick up your containers at a U-Haul location for no charge. Your car must be able to tow at least 3,000 pounds, according to U-Haul.
Bring items to U-Haul location. For no charge, you can bring your belongings to a U-Haul location and load the container there.
There is no deposit required.
Loss and damage protection
Loss and damage protection isn’t included in the basic quote for U-Box, but you have the option to buy coverage.
U-Haul offers Safestor Mobile coverage, which protects the contents of U-Box containers in storage or transit in covered events, such as fire, vandalism, leaking water or burglary. You’ll pay a monthly rate for this coverage depending on the coverage limit you select.
Changes and cancellations
You won’t owe any cancellation fees if you cancel by the loading date, but you could face fees if you cancel later. Changes to your booking cost affect your final cost. If your destination changes after your unit has been shipped one way, you have the option to store your containers at a U-Haul facility without penalty.
