Most Americans won’t be able to purchase an Obamacare plan until the open enrollment period this year, which runs from Nov. 15, 2014, to Feb. 15, 2015. However, certain events, such as adopting a child, losing health insurance coverage or getting married, may qualify you for a special enrollment period.

Before purchasing insurance, get familiar with what a given plan will offer you. All plans sold through the government marketplace are required to provide enrollees with 10 “essential health benefits,” including things such as emergency services and pregnancy and newborn care. Your plan will also give you access to free screenings, as long as you visit an in-network doctor.

If you go uninsured for the year, you’ll be liable for a tax penalty. The penalty was small in 2014 and will go up each year. Some people will be exempt from the penalty.
