With more than 300 branches across 155+ Texas cities and towns, Prosperity reaches small and rural markets that national banks often leave behind. The bank’s flagship business checking account has a low monthly fee and no limits on cash deposits — an important feature for cash-heavy brick and mortar businesses.
Also worth noting: Our experience with Prosperity’s customer support was excellent. We reached out via the bank’s live chat tool — staffed during business hours — and were immediately connected with a rep. They answered multiple questions about account fees, limits and features. That level of responsive, competent service is something a chat bot simply can’t deliver.

Texans are rich with choice for business banks. There are more than 300 unique banks operating in Texas — more than in any other state in the country as of March 2026. Use this map to find banks that offer business checking accounts and have large branch networks in the region.
To build our list of best banks for business in Texas, we started with the banks we know best — the 50+ national, regional and online financial institutions we evaluated in 2026. We focused on top-rated banks that have a large presence in Texas based on FDIC data. We also included the best online business accounts, which we’d recommend for business owners in any state. That was the easy part.
The hard part? Digging into the Texas banking landscape. We dove into Reddit threads, Facebook groups and community forums to see which banks Texas business owners recommended to other Texans. Two popped up consistently: Frost Bank and Prosperity Bank. These Texas-chartered banks anchored our recommendations.
The Texas bank finder (above) captures a wider swath of banks and credit unions. But with more than 300 banks and hundreds of credit unions operating in Texas, there are inevitably good options that we missed.
What’s new with Texas business banks?
Prosperity Bank continues M&A expansion strategy
Prosperity Bank’s parent company has already closed the book on two major mergers in 2026. The bank officially acquired American Bank in January and Texas Partners Bank in February. And it has another coming up: Houston-based Stellar Bank.
That merger, announced in January, is expected to close in summer 2026. When that happens, Prosperity will have close to 350 branch locations across the state, plus a handful in Oklahoma.
Huntington Bank enters the chat
Five years ago, Huntington Bank had no commercial banking footprint in Texas. Two marquee mergers later, Huntington has nearly 150 full-service branches and the eighth-largest deposit market share in Texas.
Huntington acquired Veritex Bank in October 2025. The Dallas-based community bank was a popular choice for female entrepreneurs, thanks in part to its Women in Business networking community. It’s unclear whether this program will survive the merger.
Huntington also closed a deal for Cadence Bank in February 2026. This merger expands Huntington’s footprint from 14 to 21 states. Cadence had more than 390 branches and 1 million customers across Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, Arkansas, Florida and Missouri.
Comerica bought by Fifth Third Bank
Dallas has been Comerica's home since 2007, when the bank relocated its headquarters from Detroit. That chapter is now closed.
Fifth Third Bank completed its acquisition of Comerica in February 2026, creating the ninth-largest bank in the U.S. For Texas business owners, the deal signals more competition ahead. Fifth Third plans to open 150 new branches in Texas over the next five years, expanding well beyond Comerica's existing footprint.

Methodology
NerdWallet’s writers and editors evaluate more than 60 business bank accounts from national, regional and online banks. Collectively, these accounts represent the largest banks by assets and the largest credit unions by membership, along with notable and emerging fintech companies and online banks.
We consider more than 20 data points for each account, including services, fees, features and rewards. We gather this information from rates and fees documents, deposit account agreements, financial institution websites and company representatives.
Our editorial team regularly reviews and updates our data to ensure consistency and accuracy. We also update our scoring on an ongoing basis to reflect changing industry norms and business owner needs. For instance, in 2026, we adjusted our expectations for APYs due to falling interest rates.
Final ratings range from one to five stars. A five-star score represents the best available product for the largest number of business owners. Learn more about how we rate business checking accounts.
