Spirit Airlines may be inactive, but its co-branded credit cards with Bank of America® aren't. At least not yet.
When the budget airline ceased operations on May 2, 2026, and canceled all flights, Bank of America® stopped accepting new applications for the Free Spirit® Travel Mastercard® and the Free Spirit® Travel More World Elite Mastercard®.
But existing cardholders' accounts will remain open and active, a Bank of America® spokesperson told NerdWallet, and customers can continue to use their cards as normal. The issuer also notes that it will continue to service the credit cards and that no immediate action is required.
Although holders can continue to use their cards to accrue Free Spirit points, it's unclear whether those points will ever be usable. Per the airline’s website: “Given Spirit Airlines’ immediate wind-down of operations, Free Spirit points are no longer redeemable, and there are no flights available for purchase. Plans for the loyalty program will be determined at a later date through the bankruptcy process.”
It's also unclear whether existing cardholders will eventually be moved to a new card, or what such a product might offer. Additionally, Bank of America® has not stated whether current cardholders have the option to close their credit cards or receive an annual fee refund. The issuer says it will communicate directly with Free Spirit cardholders about any changes to their account, including information about a card transition.
