The rule of 25 says you need to save 25 times your annual expenses to retire. Use our calculator to estimate your FIRE number if you’re thinking about retiring early.

How to use the FIRE number calculator

To use this calculator, you’ll need:

  • Your total monthly expenses. This is key to understanding how much you’ll need to have saved.

  • An idea of your lifestyle needs now and later. This calculator will show you a FIRE number, but remember there are different kinds of FIRE: “lean FIRE” (where you save more than half of your income while living a minimalist lifestyle), “fat FIRE” (where you spend more now but still save a large amount), “barista FIRE (which involves working part-time in a low-stress job during retirement) or “coast FIRE” (which involves saving enough to so that work needs only to cover day-to-day expenses).
