About Liberty Mutual pet insurance

Liberty Mutual earned 4.3 stars out of 5 for overall performance.

Liberty Mutual offers a solid pet insurance plan that you can customize based on the coverage you want. You can choose accident-only coverage or upgrade to include illness and and wellness care. In most states, accident and illness coverage includes alternative medicine such as acupuncture.

Plans are particularly worth considering for current Liberty Mutual customers, who can get a bundling discount. Savings are also available for veterans, active members of the military and those insuring multiple pets.

However, Liberty Mutual pet insurance won’t meet all pet owners’ needs. You can’t choose unlimited coverage, and the company doesn’t offer the option to pay your vet directly.

Liberty Mutual at a glance

Best for: Current Liberty Mutual customers who want a bundling discount.

Not ideal for: People who want unlimited coverage.

Liberty Mutual pet insurance plans and coverage

Liberty Mutual offers three plans for pet owners to choose from. To qualify for coverage, your pet must have had a comprehensive vet exam within the last 12 months.

Accident-only

This basic plan will cover treatment related to sudden injuries and accidents, but not illness. Liberty Mutual’s accident-only plan covers:

  • Treatment for injuries, including exams, surgery, hospitalization, diagnostic testing and medicine.

  • Euthanasia or anesthesia when performed by a veterinarian for an injury.

  • Up to two treatments per year if your pet eats a foreign object.

  • Burial and cremation expenses.

Accident and illness

Liberty Mutual’s accident and illness plan covers everything the accident-only plan does, plus:

  • Treatment for illnesses, including exams, surgery, hospitalization, diagnostic testing and medicine.

  • Congenital health conditions, including hip dysplasia.

  • Behavioral therapy performed by a veterinarian (except in Florida and Alaska).

  • Alternative medicine like hydrotherapy and acupuncture (except in Florida and Alaska).

Accident, illness and wellness

The accident, illness and wellness plan includes everything the other two plans do, plus:

  • Prescription medicine for routine purposes such as flea and tick prevention.

  • Heartworm tests and medication.

  • Dietary food and supplements.

  • Wellness exams.

  • Dental cleaning.

  • Vaccinations.

  • Deworming.

Note: Coverage options and availability may vary depending on where you live and the age and breed of your pet.

What's not covered

Depending on your state, Liberty Mutual’s pet insurance may not cover:

  • Breeding.

  • Osteoarthritis.

  • Any condition that could have been prevented by sterilization.

  • Obesity that is not due to a medical condition.

  • Eye or ear issues related to age.

Some of these exclusions are standard in the pet insurance industry, but others aren’t. For example, it’s rare for osteoarthritis and eye and ear problems not to be covered.

Liberty Mutual’s accident-only plan won't pay to treat any illness.

Liberty Mutual plan options

Deductibles: A pet insurance deductible is the amount you need to pay toward your vet bills before your insurer starts reimbursing you. Liberty Mutual offers three annual deductible options for its accident and illness coverage: $250, $500 and $1,000. No deductible applies to wellness claims.

Reimbursement amounts: Liberty Mutual pet insurance can reimburse 70%, 80% or 90% of your vet bills.

Coverage limits: Liberty Mutual has three coverage limit options: $5,000, $10,000 and $15,000. These numbers are on the low side compared to some other pet insurers’ offerings.

Restrictions and waiting periods

Age restrictions: Liberty Mutual allows you to insure pets starting at 8 weeks. But dogs older than age 12 and cats older than age 14 at the time of enrollment may be eligible for accident coverage only.

Waiting periods: A pet insurance waiting period is the time between when you buy your policy and when your coverage begins. Liberty Mutual policies have a 14-day waiting period for all claims, including wellness. Some other pet insurers have no waiting period for wellness plans.

Online tools

Website: Liberty Mutual’s website is easy to use, offering sample policies and a thorough FAQ page. You can apply for a pet insurance policy right from the website.

Mobile app: Although Liberty Mutual has a mobile app for auto and home insurance customers, you can’t use it to manage your pet insurance policy. Instead, you’ll need to log into your portal on the website.

Claims

You can file a claim via your online portal, by email or through the mail. On average, Liberty Mutual takes 10 business days to process claims.

Liberty Mutual’s method of calculating its claim reimbursement is more generous than that of some other insurers. It applies the deductible to your vet bill first, then your reimbursement rate.

Say you have a $2,000 vet bill, an 80% reimbursement rate and a $500 deductible. Here’s how different insurers would determine your payout.

How Liberty Mutual calculates claim payouts: Deductible first

  • $2,000 vet bill - $500 deductible = $1,500.

  • $1,500 x 0.8 (80% reimbursement rate) = $1,200 reimbursement.

How much you pay: $800.

How some other insurers calculate claim payouts: Reimbursement rate first

  • $2,000 vet bill x 0.8 (80% reimbursement rate) = $1,600.

  • $1,600 - $500 deductible = $1,100 reimbursement.

How much you pay: $900.
