Chime Card Review: Access to Credit, With Guardrails and Rewards
The Bottom Line
4.6
The card can help keep you out of debt, but you'll have to be OK with opening a Chime® account. Also note that there's no traditional upgrade path to an unsecured Chime product, and other unsecured cards you may get later won't provide the same training wheels.

Detailed Review
The Secured Chime Visa® Credit Card shares the same purpose as more traditional secured credit cards: It can help you build a credit history if you have no credit or bad credit.
But the similarities end there because the $0-annual-fee card, issued by Stride Bank, requires no minimum security deposit, and it even lets you adjust your credit limit. There's no credit check necessary either, and perhaps even more surprisingly, it doesn’t charge interest; you essentially set money aside in advance to pay your credit card bill. In some ways, it resembles a reloadable debit card, except that it reports your activity to the credit bureaus and offers the possibility of rewards.
These kinds of unique features can certainly help you along your credit journey, but you'll have to be willing to open an account with Chime. Plus, the card’s guardrails could leave you unprepared to manage other kinds of credit products later on. And on that topic, there's no traditional upgrade path to an unsecured card. If you're ready for a card with better perks, you'll have to look outside of Chime.
Secured Chime Visa® Credit Card: Basics
Card type: Secured.
Annual fee: $0.
Security deposit: No minimum security deposit is required. The money you decide to put in your Chime Checking Account is how much you can spend with the card. (To have the card, you must open a Chime Checking Account.)
Bonus: N/A.
Rewards: You can earn cash back on select purchases with the Secured Chime Visa® Credit Card, but the rate depends on which of Chime's three "tiers" you fall under: Chime, Chime Plus or Chime Prime. (Your tier is based on the amount you direct-deposit into your Chime account.)
Here's how it breaks down:
| Empty Table Header | Chime | Chime Plus | Chime Prime |
|---|---|---|---|
Monthly direct deposit requirement | Any amount. | One eligible direct deposit of at least $200, or a total of $400 or more in qualifying direct deposits monthly. | At least $3,000 in qualifying direct deposits monthly. |
Rewards rate | None. | 2% cash back in a spending category of your choice (from a list of six), up to a maximum of $30 per month. (After that, no rewards until the following month.) | 5% cash back in a spending category of your choice (from a list of six), up to a maximum of $75 per month. (After that, no rewards until the following month.) |
Savings rate in Chime savings account | 0.75%. | 3%. | 3.75%. |
The list of spending categories eligible for rewards includes grocery stores, gas, restaurants, monthly bills, taxi and rideshare, and travel. More on how the rewards work below.
APR: N/A.
Foreign transaction fee: None.
Other perks:
No credit check to apply.
Payments reported to the three main credit bureaus.
Free and discounted global mobile data service through GigSky.

Benefits and Perks
No credit check
Most credit cards — even secured ones — will conduct a hard inquiry on your credit report when you apply, which helps the card's issuer evaluate your creditworthiness. Even if you're then approved for the card, these hard pulls can temporarily ding your credit scores by a few points, which isn't ideal if you're new to credit. But the Secured Chime Visa® Credit Card doesn't require a credit check, meaning it's a good fit for those with poor credit or no credit.
Adjustable credit limit
The money in your Chime Checking Account is the amount you can spend on your card, meaning you can change your credit limit. Other secured credit cards have set credit limits, and you may have to use the card for several months before becoming eligible for a credit limit increase. You can use the Secured Chime Visa® Credit Card to make purchases wherever Visa is accepted.
No interest charges
The Secured Chime Visa® Credit Card charges no interest because it doesn’t let you spend more than what you have available in your account. In some ways, it’s a credit card that bears similarities to a reloadable debit card. This is helpful because you don't have the same risk of getting into high-interest credit card debt that you do with most credit cards.
Maxing out the card won’t affect your credit scores
With the Secured Chime Visa® Credit Card, your credit utilization isn’t reported to credit bureaus, so you don’t have to be mindful of the percentage of your total available money you can spend. But unlike with a prepaid debit card, your payment history and other factors will be reported, so making on-time payments is important. If you miss a payment, your card will be disabled until you pay the balance. And if your payment is more than 30 days late, this will be reported to credit bureaus and can affect your credit scores.
Autopay feature makes on-time payments effortless
The Safer Credit Building feature — which is a variation on the autopay option available on more traditional credit cards — can prevent an accidental missed payment.
Whenever you use the card to buy something, the total purchase amount is put on hold in your Chime account. Once your bill is due, the on-hold money is automatically used to pay it. This keeps you from paying late and not having the money available to pay your bill in full. (This feature is optional and you do need to opt in.)
It can earn rewards
The Secured Chime Visa® Credit Card boasts potentially high rewards rates for a credit builder card, although as noted above, those rates are capped and depend on how much you direct-deposit into your Chime Checking Account.
In the Chime app, you choose your 2% or 5% spending category from the following list:
Grocery stores.
Gas.
Restaurants.
Taxi and ridesharing.
Travel, including flights, hotels, car rentals, booking platforms and more.
Monthly bills, including cell phone service, internet, cable and household utilities, among others. (Medical bills and insurance bills don't qualify.)
You can change your category selection on the first of every month, but if you don't, the previous month's selection carries over. Cash back is automatically redeemed as a deposit into your Chime Checking Account, and there’s no redemption minimum.
Drawbacks and Considerations
A Chime Checking Account is required
The link between the Chime Checking Account and the Secured Chime Visa® Credit Card facilitates the card’s unique user experience, but opening an account is still an extra step.
The opensky® Secured Visa® Credit Card is an option for anyone without a bank account. You can fund the security deposit with a debit card, check, money order or transfer from Western Union.

Rewards are limited and conditional
The Secured Chime Visa® Credit Card can offer solid rewards rates, but only if you set up direct deposit into your Chime Checking Account, and only if you deposit enough there.
On top of that, only certain spending qualifies for rewards: Earned cash back is limited to one category, and there's a rewards cap of $30 per month for Chime Plus members, and $75 per month for Chime Prime members.
Put another way, once you've spent $1,500 in your eligible rewards category, you're done earning rewards until the following month. And if you don't select a category at all? You won't earn any rewards at all.
Of course, when you're working to strengthen your credit, rewards aren't the main priority. But they're nice to have, and they're findable among other cards in this class without any deposit conditions. For instance, the $0-annual-fee Discover it® Secured Credit Card earns 2% cash back at gas stations and restaurants on up to $1,000 in purchases each quarter (then 1% back), plus 1% cash back on all other purchases.
And unlike with the Secured Chime Visa® Credit Card, new cardholders are eligible for a bonus offer, which Discover phrases this way: "INTRO OFFER: Unlimited Cashback Match for all new cardmembers—only from Discover. Discover will automatically match all the cash back you’ve earned at the end of your first year! There’s no minimum spending or maximum rewards."
No upgrade path to another credit card
The Secured Chime Visa® Credit Card can help you strengthen your credit, but once that happens, there's no higher-tier unsecured card to move to. If you decide you're ready for a credit card that offers better rewards and benefits, you'll have to open up a new account with an entirely different issuer, which will often trigger a hard pull on your credit.
The aforementioned Discover it® Secured Credit Card, on the other hand, has a well-defined upgrade path. After you’ve had it for seven months, Discover will start reviewing your account each month to determine if you’re ready to shift to an unsecured card.
It doesn’t provide practice for managing more traditional cards
The Secured Chime Visa® Credit Card makes it very easy to stick to a budget and pay your credit card bills on time. This is good news for your credit scores, but any credit card you eventually graduate to will function very differently.
Once you start using an unsecured credit card, the training wheels come off in a major way. Revolving credit cards allow you to spend up to your credit limit, make just a small minimum payment while taking on debt and then spend up to the limit again. And if you make a late payment, you could get slapped with a late fee, a higher interest rate and a big dip in your credit scores.
The Secured Chime Visa® Credit Card will certainly help you build credit, but before you apply for another credit card later on, familiarize yourself with how they work.
How To Decide If It's Right For You
If your goal is purely building credit, the Secured Chime Visa® Credit Card removes many of the stumbling blocks that can trip up anyone who is new to using credit cards. But you'll have to jump through some hoops that other starter credit cards don't have — though those other options may charge interest and require a fixed security deposit.
You'll have to consider your preferences to determine which option is best. If you do opt for the Secured Chime Visa® Credit Card, know that any unsecured credit cards you use later on won't have the same guardrails.

Based on a representative study conducted by Experian® in Sept 2025, the top 10% of members who made their first purchase with Credit Builder, an earlier version of Secured Chime Visa® Credit Card, between April and August 2024, observed a FICO® Score 8 increase of 71 points after approximately 8 months. Average increase of 28 points across all participants in the study. Credit score improvement not guaranteed. Paying on time may increase your score, while late payment may decrease your score. Other credit activity can impact your score. Credit score is one of many factors creditors may consider in evaluating credit applications.
On-time payment history may have a positive impact on your credit score. Late payment may negatively impact your credit score. Results may vary. Chime will report your activities to Transunion®, Experian®, and Equifax®. Impact on your credit may vary, as Credit scores are independently determined by credit bureaus based on a number of factors including the financial decisions you make with other financial services organizations.
Money added to the Secured Chime Visa® Credit Card will be held in a secured deposit account as collateral for your Secured Chime Visa® Credit Card, and you can spend up to this amount. You can use money deposited in your Secured Deposit Account to pay off your charges at the end of every month.
Out-of-network ATM withdrawal and over the counter advance fees may apply.
SpotMe® on Credit is an optional, no interest / no fee overdraft line of credit tied to the Secured Deposit Account available to qualifying members with an active Chime Card Account. To qualify for the SpotMe on Chime Card service, you must receive $200 or more in qualifying direct deposits to your Chime® Checking Account each month and have activated your physical secured Chime Visa® Credit Card or Chime Visa® Debit Card. Qualifying members will be allowed to overdraw their Secured Deposit Account up to $20, but may later be eligible for a higher limit of up to $200 or more based on Chime account history, direct deposit frequency and amount, spending activity and other risk-based factors. The SpotMe on Chime Card Limit will be displayed within the Chime mobile app and is subject to change at any time, at Chime’s or its banking partners’ discretion. Although Chime does not charge any overdraft fees for SpotMe on Chime Card, there may be out-of-network or third-party fees associated with ATM transactions and fees associated with OTC cash withdrawals. SpotMe on Chime Card won’t cover non-card transactions. SpotMe on Chime Card Terms and Conditions.

Methodology
NerdWallet reviews credit cards with an eye toward both the quantitative and qualitative features of a card. Quantitative features are those that boil down to dollars and cents, such as fees, interest rates, rewards (including earning rates and redemption values) and the cash value of benefits and perks. Qualitative factors are those that affect how easy or difficult it is for a typical cardholder to get good value from the card. They include such things as the ease of application, simplicity of the rewards structure, the likelihood of using certain features, and whether a card is well-suited to everyday use or is best reserved for specific purchases. Our star ratings serve as a general gauge of how each card compares with others in its class, but star ratings are intended to be just one consideration when a consumer is choosing a credit card.
