The IRS has released updated tax brackets for 2027, which apply to the taxes we file in 2028. You may notice that the seven tax rates generally stay the same year-to-year — so why do tax brackets get adjusted?
Well, due to inflation, our money might not stretch as far as it did the previous year. To combat that, the IRS adjusts tax brackets so taxpayers can keep a little bit more of their money in a lower tax bracket compared with the previous year.
For example, a single filer could make up to $50,400 in 2026 and pay a top tax rate of 12%. But in 2027, they could make up to $52,025 and still only pay a top tax rate of 12% thanks to these inflation adjustments.
Not sure how to read the tax bracket tables below?
Find your total taxable income in the "tax bracket" column. The corresponding tax rate is the highest rate you'll pay — it doesn’t apply to all your income; it applies only to the portion that falls within that bracket. The income in the lower brackets is taxed at those lower rates.
For example, let's say you’re a single filer and you expect to earn $150,000 this year. The top rate you’d pay on a portion of your income is 24%. The rest would be taxed at 10%, 12% and 22%.
